360 Video: A look inside the IBM Research Model Shop

A team of model makers design, prototype and build IBM scientists’ ideas and inventions. With their motto of “a napkin sketch will do!” the model makers have designed and contributed to numerous IBM Research breakthroughs, including installation of the dilution fridges that hold the IBM Quantum Experience team’s superconducting qubit devices, the development of Watson’s mechanical thumb, building the water-based cooling system for the Blue Gene supercomputer systems and pollution sensor housing for the Green Horizons project in China.

Skilled at operating lathes, milling machines, drill presses, saws, wire EDM machines, 3D printers, and more, the model makers work side by side with scientists to discuss designs, progress, changes, and repairs; and more often than not the same model maker will be called in to update or fix a machine or part they built – even decades later.
