As per the latest data, Indian telecommunications industry is the world's fastest growing industry with a huge base of mobile phone subscribers (811.59 million). In terms of number of wireless connections in the world, India has the second largest telecommunication network after China. According to the latest projections, the fastest growing telecommunications industry in the world ie India will have around 1.16billion subscribers by 2013.

The above mentioned observations are clear indicator of the huge opportunity lying there in the market of mobile handsets in India. Simultaneously the appetite for mobile apps of the consumer is sky rocketing day by day, and as a result demand for the developers is huge.

GetJar, the second largest app store in the world has announced that, according to recent reports & surveys the global mobile-application industry is estimated at $ 17.5 billion by 2012. Also mobile-app downloads are expected to grow at a rate of 92% per year, going from seven billion downloads in 2009, to almost 50 billion in 2012. With the rise of usage of smartphones, and mobile computing in general, these numbers are quite normal.

App economy is driven by data subscriptions. Global subscription base has 5 billion by the end of 2010.27% are data subscribers, actively downloading apps and using mobile sites. Data subscription is going to reach 45% worldwide in 3yrs. As a result, App economy will be 7times.

Nokia and Cornell University's Professor Trevor Pinch, recently conducted a study on people from 10 countries on the behavior and usage of mobile applications on smartphones.

The most popular apps that are downloaded in India are:

  • music (41 per cent),
  • social networking (41 per cent),
  • business (27 per cent),
  • photo / personalization (22 per cent)
  • games (22 per cent).

The more popular apps people use are:

  • social networking (40 per cent),
  • music (36 per cent),
  • business (28 per cent),
  • utilities (21 per cent)
  • games (21 per cent).

Overall, games (38 per cent), social networking (35 per cent) and music (29 per cent) are the most downloaded apps, while social networking (31 per cent), games (29 per cent) and utilities (25 per cent) ) are the most used.
