The new T-Mobile myTouch review. A great iPhone alternative for Anti-Apple consumers

About a year ago, T-Mobile introduced to the cellular market a new phone that was supposed to give a fight to Apple’s iPhone. The company joined hands with the internet monster Google and together with an HTC machine – they have created the T-Mobile G1 HTC Dream.

But something didn’t work out there. The Google platform was fun and accessible as only Google knows, but the heavy, clunky feel of the phone could not compete with the sexy iPhone. The G1 had a flip screen and a real keyboard which made it easier for crazy texters, but gave the phone a weird look, and what’s more important than looks these days?

Well, the three musketeers, T-Mobile, Google and HTC are coming back with a new 3G phone, the T-Mobile myTouch which looks like a big improvement, both in design and software.

First of all the myTouch looks and feels way better than the G1. It comes in three colors, one of them resembles Apple’s distinctive futuristic white. It is defiantly an attention grabber and your friends would love to give it a try.

The phone is not the smallest one in the market. Its dimensions are 4.45 x 2.19 and 0.54 inches deep and it weighs 4 ounces with the battery attached – about the same size as the iPhone. The screen is a decent 3.2 incher, touch sensitive and it comes with a brilliant 320×480 HVGA resolution.

The interface is fairly simple to use. You can drag the menu by tapping the bottom of the screen which will let you into all of your applications and downloads. The unlock feature is the same as in the G1 and you simply drag your finger on a pattern of circles.

Of course that you get al the Google services and goodies built in. From your private Gmail account to the great Google Maps service, it’s easy to stay connected and find the coolest new restaurant in town. If you can’t get there, then Google Street View will guide you through the streets of the city.

T-Mobile is also playing heavy on the phone’s personalization. When you buy an iPhone you’re just stuck with Steve Jobs’ vision. But the myTouch is completely personalizable. Starting from the usual desktop maintenance where you can put your favorite widgets and apps but really sticks out with the wide range of package possibilities. You can choose a preset design for the shell, or even upload picture and make your own custom skin. So if you are freaked out by everybody having an iPhone that looks just the same, you’ll love the myTouch.

The price tag isn’t so cheap. It requires a two year contract and saying good-bye to well earned 200 bucks. The 3.2 MP camera is also pretty standard with no flash but with video capabilities. If you don’t like Apple and you’ve been waiting for a fair competitor, the myTouch is defiantly worth buying.
