Curly, a robot powered by an artificial intelligence system developed by a German-Korean team, has won curling matches against expert human players. A sport that requires “Both precise physical movements and strategic planning”, underline the New Scientist.
Curling takes place on the ice where players slide heavy, polished granite stones towards a circular target. They compete in two teams of four and can take turns “throwing” a stone or “sweeping” past its path. Curly, he just throws the stones, he doesn’t sweep.
Mounted on wheels, the robot has a sort of crane in place of the neck, at the end of which is placed a video camera, “Which allows him to assess the position of the stones”, explains the science weekly. Curly also has a tweezer that can rotate and release stones. He is able to accurately anticipate the end point of the thrown stone with a specific angle and speed.
Except that in real life and on ice in particular, there are uncertainties. This is why Curly is endowed with artificial intelligence; a reinforcement learning algorithm takes real conditions into account and adjusts them as the match progresses.
