Destiny 2 Legendary Shards Guide – How to Earn Legendary Shards, How to Infuse Weapons and Armor

The currency of Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 isn’t all that easy to come by, and you’ll have to be prepared to sacrifice some pretty nice Legendary weapons or armor pieces if you want to have enough Legendary Shards to trade with Xur when he arrives. In this Destiny 2 Legendary Shards guide, we’ll be outlining all the best ways to assemble a number of Legendary Shards as quickly as possible, as well as explaining their various uses within the game.

For more Destiny 2 tips, head over to our Destiny 2 guide and walkthrough hub. It’s got all the info you need to improve your Destiny 2 performance and get that all important sweet loot.

Destiny 2 Legendary Shards Guide

Firstly, Legendary Shards can not only be used as a currency for Xur, Destiny’s mysterious vendor that deals exclusively in Exotic items, but they can also be used to infuse weapons and armor, raising the overall level of your gear.

Hard Light, one of the best Exotic weapons in Destiny 2.

But, before you can put any Legendary Shards to use, you’ll have to earn them. These elusive items can be obtained from either decrypting Faction gear (Crucible, European Dead Zone, Arcology, etc.), or by dismantling both Legendary and Exotic weapons and armor.

In order to get your hands on Legendary and Exotic weapons and armor items, you’ll first need to hit the overall level cap of 20, which can be achieved by simply completing the campaign of Destiny 2. After this, you’ll need to complete endgame activities like Strikes, Crucible matches, Nightfall Strikes, and Raids, in order to earn Legendary (and sometimes Exotic) gear.

Simply head into your inventory once you’ve got this gear, and hold X/Square to dismantle the gear. You’ll earn 3 Legendary Shards for every Legendary and Exotic weapon and armor piece you dismantle.

Destiny 2 How to Infuse Gear Guide

Simply put, if you have lower level Exotic or Legendary gear lying around, you can infuse it with a more powerful item, in order to raise the overall level of the former item. It’s a great way to power up some of your favorite gear, that you might have to leave behind in your Vault due to the lower level of the item.

When you’re in your character menu, hover over an item you wish to upgrade, and press Y/Triangle. This will bring up the details of the item, and under the ‘mods’ header, the first option will be ‘infuse’.

Hover over the infuse option, and you’ll be presented with a list of any items that you can infuse with this one, in order to boost the overall rating of the item you selected in the character menu.

Infusing an item costs 4 Legendary Shards, and we’d only recommend dismantling items that you no longer use for infusion, since you don’t really want to be giving up your most powerful weapons and armor items.

If you want to see a comprehensive list of the all the most powerful, Exotic weapons and armor pieces that Destiny 2 has to offer you, then head on over to our Destiny 2 Exotic gear guide, where you can find all the items in the game that will undoubtedly enhance your Power level. We’ve got guides on how to get the Rat King in Destiny 2, how to get the Mida Multi-Tool in Destiny 2 and how to get the Sturm in Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 exotics list: weapons, armor, Sparrows and more

In the universe of Destiny 2 (and its predecessor, Destiny), exotic-level items are the best gear you can get. These coveted weapons, pieces of armor and more don’t just serve as your most powerful tools in the fight against the forces of the Darkness — they often bear unique properties that complement and enhance your Guardian’s abilities.

And they look awesome, to boot.

Destiny 2 has only been out for a few days, so we haven’t had the chance to personally unlock or use many of the game’s exotic items. But we’ve put together a list of everything we know of — so far, anyway. Of course, that includes the three exotic weapons that were available in the Destiny 2 beta: the solar hand cannon Sunshot, the auto rifle Sweet Business and the arc submachine gun Riskrunner.

It’s true that the Cabal attack that kicks off Destiny 2 results in the destruction of the Tower — which also serves as a convenient narrative explanation for why all the gear players acquired in Destiny is now gone. But if you’re a Destiny veteran, you may be interested to hear that at least two exotic weapons from the original Destiny are returning in its sequel: the auto rifle Hard Light and the scout rifle MIDA Multi-Tool.

Destiny - image of MIDA Multi-ToolDestiny - image of MIDA Multi-Tool

MIDA Multi-Tool, an exotic scout rifle, as it appeared in Destiny.

As for exotic armor, you first encounter it in a story mission on Titan — you get to choose from three different pieces as a reward. There are more than a few pieces of exotic armor returning from Destiny in the sequel.

Curiously, unlike legendary (purple) gear, exotics in Destiny 2 do not appear to require Guardians to have reached the level cap of 20 — or at least, exotic armor doesn’t. We were able to don the exotic armor in question once we had hit level 4, and each piece bore a defense value of 105. That’s far below the legendary items in the Destiny 2 beta, which were at 200 attack (for weapons) and 200 defense (armor) and required level 20.

There are also plenty of other exotics in Destiny 2. We saw three exotic Sparrows, each rated with 160 speed, which was the cap in the original game. There are at least six exotic jumpships, which are still merely cosmetic items. And Bungie has introduced exotic emotes in Destiny 2. They don’t just consist of a fun animation for your Guardian — each one comes with neon holographic effects. For instance, a Guardian doing the Salty emote will sprinkle white salt onto the floor. (Yeah, it’s pretty great.)

Another neat thing about exotic gear — as well as all weapons and armor pieces from Trials of the Nine (née Trials of Osiris) and the raid — is that you can get some backstory about them, and yes, you can do it directly in the game. When you’re examining one of these unique items, holding the left trigger will bring up a lore tab. These pages are full of the same kind of detail that was relegated to Destiny’s Grimoire cards, which don’t exist in the sequel.

How to get exotics

With all this exotic gear in Destiny 2, it makes sense that there’s a variety of ways to obtain it. The most basic way is the aforementioned mission reward, or specific exotic quests (like the infamous Thorn quest in the original Destiny).

When you decrypt an exotic engram, it’ll turn into an exotic item of some kind. Bright engrams, which only Tess Everis can decrypt, may contain cosmetic exotic items like Sparrows and emotes. Certain special vendors, like Xur, will sell exotics. If an exotic was a pre-order bonus, like the trace rifle Coldheart, it’ll be available at the Gunsmith once you hit level 20. And finally, there’s always the chance that you’ll get exotic gear as a random drop from loot chests, Public Events, Crucible matches and other activities.

Without further ado, here are all the exotic items we’ve seen so far in Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 guide: How to infuse armor and weapons

Infusing gear in Destiny 2 is a way to keep low-power Legendary or Exotic gear viable by increasing its Power level. If you’re not familiar with upgrading gear from the first Destiny, this can be (more than) a little confusing, but we’re going to show you how to do it and why you want to infuse your weapons and armor.

What does Infusing gear do?

The short answer is this: Infusing gear makes Legendary or Exotic gear better by feeding it better, less rare gear.

Let’s say you got some really cool chest armor early in the game (like what we have in the image above). Since the gear you get roughly corresponds to your power level at the time you got it, this gear only has a defense of 56. Much later in the game, when your Power level is much higher, that 56 defense armor is laughably weak. But it’s Exotic and has extra perks and buffs. And it looks cool. What is a Guardian to do?

That’s where Infusing comes in. With a few Legendary Shards and some Glimmer, you can feed some higher defense chest armor to your 56 defense Exotic, to turn it into something on par with your current power level.

How to Infuse gear

From your Character menu, pick a piece of Legendary or Exotic gear and open up the details. Under the armor/weapon mods heading, the first option will be Infuse. When you hover over that option, you’ll see the available gear you can Infuse into your choice, as well as the cost in Glimmer and Legendary Shards.

What are Legendary Shards and how do I get them?

Legendary Shards are a consumable material you’ll get when you dismantle Legendary or Exotic items. There’s no other way to get them. (They’re also one of the currencies you’ll use with Xur.) They’re similar to the Gunsmith Materials you get from dismantling Rare or better gear.

When to infuse weapons and armor (and what to keep)

Since Infusing Legendary or Exotic items requires Legendary Shards, and you can only get Legendary Shards by dismantling Legendary or Exotic gear, this is best saved for later in the game. At that point, you’re already high in Power and you’re getting Legendary (or better) drops more often. Hold onto any Legendary and Exotic items, but save all the dismantling and infusing for later on, when things aren’t churning quite so much.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Learn Trials Playthrough with Chaos component 5: Dim Planet

I do not approve of this.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-journey video recreation created and printed by Nintendo for the Nintendo Swap and Wii U video recreation consoles. The recreation is a component of the The Legend of Zelda collection, and follows amnesiac protagonist Url, who awakens from a 100-calendar year slumber to a mysterious voice that guides him to defeat Calamity Ganon right before he can wipe out the kingdom of Hyrule.

The title’s gameplay and mechanics constitute a departure from the series’ common conventions, featuring an open up-globe surroundings, a detailed physics engine, significant-definition visuals, and voice performing. Announced in 2013, the recreation was to begin with prepared for launch as a Wii U exceptional in 2015, but was delayed twice prior to its launch on March 3, 2017. Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Swap, as nicely as the remaining Nintendo-generated recreation for the Wii U.

Breath of the Wild obtained universal acclaim from critics, who deemed it to be a person of the greatest video video games of all time. Critics praised the game’s open up-finished, physics-pushed gameplay that encourages player experimentation and exploration, with many calling it a landmark title in open up-globe recreation design, while insignificant criticism was directed at the game’s complex efficiency at launch.

North Korea’s Latest Missile Launch Hastens the Day It Can Launch Nuclear Weapons

North Korea’s successful test of its first intercontinental ballistic missile carries grave geopolitical implications for a vast swath of the world. Although such an achievement seemed improbable not long ago, it was all but inevitable.

The Hermit Kingdom tested its first nuclear bomb in 2006 and has spent the past decade steadily improving the rockets needed to lob one at its enemies. Its missile program proceeded deliberately at first, but ramped up significantly under the leadership of Kim Jong-un. Despite its frequent missteps, experts agree that North Korea will achieve the ability to launch a nuclear missile.

Few people who watch the country’s weapons program expressed surprise at Tuesday’s test of a Hwasong-14 missile, which went 580 miles and reached an altitude of 1,741 miles during a 37-minute flight.

“I wouldn’t call the test over the weekend a surprise simply because they do have a stated goal of creating an intercontinental range ballistic missile,” says Michael Elleman, a senior fellow for missile defense at the International Institute for Strategic Studies and an analyst for the North Korean watchdog group 38 North. “This is part of a longstanding process and I expect to see more tests.”

The Trump administration confirmed that North Korea launched an ICBM. US and South Korean forces performed a joint ballistic missile test on Wednesday in the Sea of Japan—a response at odds with China and Russia, who called for deescalation and peace talks. North Korea, meanwhile, reiterated its goal of developing nuclear weapons and the missiles to fire them anywhere in the world.

Tuesday’s test followed a series of failed launches—the most recent in April—and North Korea touted it as proof of its commitment to achieving that goal.

North Korea’s government-run Korean Central News Agency said the test showcased the missile’s propulsive phases and durability during re-entry. The North Koreans fired the missile at an exceedingly steep trajectory, but experts said its altitude, distance, and flight time leads them to believe the Hwasong-14 could have a range of 4,039 miles or more. That places much of Alaska at risk, along with US allies like Japan and targets as far away as Moscow.

Still, experts caution against making broad generalizations about the country’s missile program based upon one test. Missile testing is an iterative process with each successive test building on the last as scientists and engineers improve each component.

Tracking North Korean missile development poses a particular challenge. The country had shown off the Hwasong-14 missile in military parades before Tuesday’s test, but the Pentagon said on Wednesday that the missile was one “we’ve not seen before,” indicating that North Korean engineers have adapted it since that public display.

Experts pore over images released by North Korean state media to glean the smallest details about the country’s capabilities, but many aspects of a missile test aren’t knowable from afar. Analysts cannot determine how much weight the missile carried, for example, how it handled reentry into the atmosphere, whether it was launched with a particular target in mind, and whether it actually reached that target. This makes it difficult to contextualize the missile’s actual capabilities.

Experts also note that since North Korean missiles land in many locations, it’s unlikely that the country has sensor arrays collecting data about the final stages of flight. This would be valuable information for development that the country doesn’t seem to gather at this point.

“You can observe the success of a missile flight, but it’s harder to observe the success of a reentry vehicle or the miniaturization of a weapon other than what North Korea claims—unless they conduct an actual nuclear missile test,” says Frank Aum, a former Department of Defense senior advisor on North Korea. “Until they do something like that we’ll never know for sure.”

Analysts warn against underestimating North Korea’s abilities, particularly with regard to targeting technology and building warheads small enough to place on a missile. At this point, the international community is scrambling to accept that North Korea is on track to develop weapons that seemed out of reach just a few years ago.

“We’re tempting Kim Jong-un to put a nuclear warhead on a missile and launch it out over the Sea of Japan and detonate it,” says Bruce Bennett, a senior defense analyst at the RAND Corporation. “Do we really want that to happen? Because if he does that he’s proven they’ve miniaturized. People are going to recognize North Korea as a nuclear power.”

North Korea’s weapons development is clearly gaining momentum, driven by intense pressure from Kim Jong-un. For now, the country appears at least a few years away from possessing an ICBM capable of threatening the continental United States and much of the rest of the world. That hastens the need for the international community to weigh all options—negotiations, sanctions, hacking, physical force–for addressing this growing threat. “Any country that conducts a successful ICBM test, they’ve all been ultimately able to achieve a successful reentry vehicle and miniaturization,” Aum says. “So it’s just a matter of time.”

Destiny 2’s weapons and armor won’t have random rolls

Earlier this week I wrote a feature outlining the nagging worries I have about Destiny 2’s design, a game I am otherwise almost uncomfortably excited about playing. Clearly inspired by the article, Bungie has decided to pile on a new worry. According to an E3 interview game director Luke Smith gave to Mashable, all the gear in the game—i.e. weapons and armor—will drop with set perk rolls.

Why is that a worry? Well, Destiny is a loot grind game and one of the things that kept players plugging away for three years in the first game, despite some Saharan content droughts, was the flickering hope of getting a god roll on a particularly coveted item. But apparently that’s a situation which the sequel doesn’t want to repeat.

“There aren’t random rolls on weapons anymore,” Smith said. “Better Devils is a Crucible hand cannon [in Destiny 2], and what it has on it is what it has on it. Period.” Apparently the reason for the change is to make balancing easier. “It’s gonna give us more flexibility to do per-item tuning… [That’s] something we haven’t had before because of the way we were building the [first] game.”

Although he doesn’t admit it directly, the frustrating thing here is Smith is pretty clearly referring to PvP balancing, which as I noted in my feature, was a shitshow in Destiny 1. By removing random perk combinations, the sandbox design team will be able to maintain a tighter grip over what weapons Guardians are bringing to bear on each other, but at the substantial expense of weapon diversity in PvE.

So will players still want to grind at all if the pool of possible gear drops is so much more shallow? Well, eagle eyes have already noticed from the promotional footage shown that Destiny 2’s guns appear to have mod slots, which could create some added interest.

Smith also told Mashable that they’re looking at other systems to generate variance and fun, though couldn’t commit to these being in place at launch.“How can my second, third, and tenth Better Devils hand cannon be interesting? That’s a question we should be asking and answering as quickly as we can… We have ideas. While I would like nothing more than to share those ideas with you, we’re up against [a deadline]. I don’t know if they’ll make it for our Sept. 6 [release] date. But we have some ideas that we’re pretty excited about.”

What I find especially odd about this is that when I spoke to Smith it was clear he understood the allure of chasing ultra-rare loot. Check out this exchange between Smith and Datto, a prominent Destiny YouTuber, who like Smith played a ton of vanilla WoW. The two of them reminisce about especially hard to get gear, and the emotional pull of chasing a ‘white whale’ item.

I have to say that as design decisions go, this one really worries me—and players on the Destiny subreddit have largely reacted negatively, though there are some optimists. As ever, the proof will be in the playing, but I dearly hope Bungie hasn’t shot for a more casual experience with Destiny 2 and ended up hitting its own power-armored foot.
