Google sets untrust schedule for Chrome over Symantec certificates

Google has finalized a schedule that, over the next 12 months, will send companies scrambling to replace the digital certificates that secure their websites or risk being viewed with suspicion by users running Chrome, the world’s most popular browser.

“Companies are staring down the barrel of a boat load of work,” said David Anthony Mahdi, a research director at Gartner, and the industry research firm’s resident expert on digital certificates and the CAs (certificate authorities) that issue them. “This is massive.”

Beginning with Chrome 66, currently set to show up the third week of April next year, Google will “remove trust in Symantec-issued certificates issued prior to June 1, 2016,” wrote three members of the browser’s security team, in a post to a company blog. “If you are a site operator with a certificate issued by a Symantec CA prior to June 1, 2016, then prior to the release of Chrome 66, you will need to replace the existing certificate with a new certificate from any Certificate Authority trusted by Chrome.”

A follow-up version of Chrome, slated for debut a little more than a year from now, will untrust every Symantec certificate, no matter when it was issued. When Google removes trust from the certificates, users will begin seeing messages, some explicit, others subtler, informing them that the connection between them and the website is insecure.

SpaceX weathers Irma, no delays to busy October launch schedule

Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station were largely spared the brunt of Hurricane Irma due to last-second changes to its projected path. Both SpaceX and ULA have since reported that damages to their facilities are minimal and unlikely to contribute to any delays in upcoming launches, of which SpaceX has several.

Several days before Hurricane Irma reached Florida, the storm projected to make landfall almost directly on Cape Canaveral, stoking fears of spaceflight journalists and forcing the evacuation of several living on the Space Coast. While Irma’s course veered southeast as it neared the Space Coast, Cape Canaveral eventually experienced some level of heavy rain, flooding, and high winds on Sunday and Monday. A NASA flyover of Kennedy Space Center illustrated this best, with very little damage visible from the helicopter, aside from some limited flooding and some mild damage to the roofs of several buildings.

Modern facilities at the Cape are generally built to tolerate Category 5 winds of 150 mph, and Irma appeared to potentially pose a threat to even those structures in the early days of forecasts. However, with maximum recorded winds of around 100 mph from Irma, worries more centered around tornadoes formed by the hurricane, as well as more temporary structures that were under construction. Gwynne Shotwell commented on this earlier today, speaking at the World Satellite Business Week meeting in Paris, France. SpaceX’s President said that LC-39A and SLC-40 looked fine in initial flyovers performed by the company. Her main concern was an array of construction materials and temporary shelters currently at SLC-40 that were exceptionally vulnerable to hurricane conditions.

SpaceX’s LC-39A launch pad seen from a NASA helicopter on 9/12. Thankfully, no damage is readily apparent. (NASA)

Following natural (and unnatural) disasters at Kennedy Space Center and CCAFS, access is restricted to a select crew of emergency reaction teams that are tasked with combing through the myriad facilities and cataloging any serious damage and potential dangers for workers. Once they are finished with their surveys, nonessential personnel are allowed to return to their workplaces and begin their own surveys and repairs. CCAFS and the 45th Space Wing began allowing nonessential personnel back into the facility on Tuesday, while Kennedy Space Center may open its gates on Thursday. Once allowed back in, SpaceX can begin their own damage survey and conduct any necessary repairs.

The company is planning to conduct its next East Coast launch as early as October 2nd, with a second October launch from Florida expected no earlier than October 14th. SpaceX is also scheduled to launch Iridium’s third group of ten NEXT satellites from California on October 4th, so the company has an extremely busy month ahead. Thankfully, with more than two weeks between now and next launch, SpaceX will likely have plenty of time to undertake all necessary repairs, so long as damage is minimal.

While SpaceX was spared, those more directly in the path of Irma were not nearly as lucky. In Florida, nearly 25% of all residents were without power for days, and many millions are still waiting for utility companies to repair widespread damage to their infrastructure. Many homes have undoubtedly been destroyed beyond repair. Floridans were largely spared from the deadly threat of Irma by widespread evacuation orders on the East coast, but most residents of islands along Irma’s path had nowhere to evacuate. Dozens of deaths have been reported in Barbados, the Virgin Islands, and other islands. Many more were killed and injured in Cuba. Recovery from Irma will undoubtedly take many years.

SpaceX on schedule to have four operational launch pads by end of 2018

While giving an interview to a local paper, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. provided information on SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas launch facilities currently under construction.

Judge Trevino Jr. indicated that SpaceX is largely on track to achieve an internal goal of conducting its first Texas launches in December 2018. He noted that SpaceX was “in constant contact” with the county and that he was under the impression that any delays to the December schedule “[would] cost [the company] money”. While impossible to know what sort of details or evidence SpaceX has provided Cameron County, photos and videos taken by local newspapers and residents suggest that progress is gradually being made. More importantly, after moving nearly 700 million pounds of earth, it is understood that the foundation for the launch facility is nearly complete, marking the end of one of the lengthiest and most difficult tasks needed for the new pad.

The importance of this new Texas launch facility will be the additional 12 annual launches SpaceX will be able to conduct from it. Adding to a veritable fleet of launch pads, Boca Chica will become the fourth SpaceX pad once it is activated in 2018 or 2019.

LC-40, destroyed in a static fire anomaly just over a year ago, is nearly repaired and will likely be reactivated in October. Following its reactivation, SpaceX’s team of pad engineers will move their focus to LC-39A, where they will upgrade the pad in preparation for Falcon Heavy’s inaugural launch later this year. Once the pad engineering team is finished with the majority of their East Coast construction, the team can begin to focus exclusively on SpaceX’s Texas facilities. The start of 2018 will likely see a flurry of progress made at Boca Chica.

SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch facilities have been teased in the past as a potential location for the company’s first manned interplanetary flights. Musk was quoted in 2014 saying, “it could very well be that the first person that departs for another planet could depart from Boca Chica”. One can only imagine that a small coastal town in rural Texas never expected that it might one day host the very first manned missions to Mars. Time will tell.

As for anyone interested in viewing a rocket launch, the Boca Chica facilities will provide exceptional opportunities and views. Cameron County is developing a large, 4000 person amphitheater that is expected to be used for a variety of local events, as well as rocket launch viewing parties.

Square Enix Announces Schedule for Closed Beta

Facebook/FinalFantasyJecht is coming to Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. The closed beta for the game takes place this August.

Square Enix has revealed more details on the closed beta it will host for the upcoming fighting game, “Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.”

According to GameSpot, the online test will begin from Aug. 25 and ends on Sept. 3 in North America and Europe. Registration is ongoing, with players free to sign up until it closes on Aug. 20. But not everyone who signed up will be chosen to try out the arcade fighter game ahead of the others.

“Dissidia Final Fantasy NT” is due to be released for PlayStation 4 in early 2018. It is the third installment in the popular spinoff series. It has been announced that a new character will be added in the game. Jecht, the Blitzball legend from “Final Fantasy X,” will be joining the likes of Cloud, Lightning and Kefka, but Square Enix has made it clear that he will not be available during the closed beta.

Meanwhile, Japanese players will have their closed beta test from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4. Gematsu reported that those who are interested may download an application ticket from the PlayStation Store. This will be up for grabs from Aug. 8 to Aug. 20. Participants will be chosen by lottery.

Fourteen characters will reportedly be featured in the Japanese online test, which include Warrior of Light (Final Fantasy), Cecil Harvey (Final Fantasy IV), Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) and Vaan (Final Fantasy XII), to name a few. The closed beta will also feature the gameplay modes “Class Match,” “COM Battle,” and “Tutorial.”

Meanwhile, there have been websites offering free beta codes to players for the event. PlayStation Lifestyle promises rewards to those who will be able to convince them that they deserve a spot. All interested participants have to do is make a comment on the article about what their “ultimate team” of three “Final Fantasy” characters would be, complete with a good explanation. Winners are selected every Friday. Applicants must have a valid email address on Disqus for the website to contact in case they win.

SpaceX’s first crewed NASA launches remain on schedule for 2018

Plenty of work lies ahead of both companies, but progress abounds

Amidst a seemingly relaxed July for SpaceX, the company has been working intently with NASA to prepare for its first Commercial Crew mission in as few as seven months. NASA’s combination of strict technical requirements and partial flexibility with the famously fast-moving aerospace company have resulted in a collaborative environment that Elon Musk recently deemed beneficial to the company.

As NASA works with the company to ensure that Dragon 2 is as safe as realistically possible, SpaceX has begun several rounds of advanced testing and training. NASA astronauts are in the process of learning how to operate Dragon 2, and a near-production version of the vehicle’s control software and hardware has been integrated to allow for accurate simulations as practice. Meanwhile, Department of Defense personnel that will be tasked with recovering Dragons and crew from the ocean have begun developing those procedures with a mockup capsule.

At SpaceX’s Hawthorne manufacturing facilities, four separate Crew Dragons are in different states of assembly. While one of those vehicles is intended solely for qualification testing, the three remaining Dragons will respectively launch into low Earth orbit throughout the course of 2018, assuming schedules remain firm. Structural testing and verification of the qualification Dragon was completed as of July 24th, and the first flightworthy Dragon has undergone testing of its pressure vessel to ensure that there are no leaks.

Deemed Demo-1 in relation to the first flight of Dragon being Demonstration Flight 1, SpaceX workers are almost ready to integrate the service section and pressure vessel compartments. The pressure vessel is better known as the crew compartment, while the service section is where all the necessary flight and life support systems are contained. Dragon’s “claw” – used to grab hold of the ISS upon docking – and engines have also passed qualification tests.

Different parts of the Demo-1 Dragon in Hawthorne. The crew compartment or pressure vessel can be seen on the left, while the heat shield is front and center. A second and possibly third Crew Dragon pressure vessel can be seen in the background. (SpaceX)

Possibly the most exciting of all, SpaceX has conducted the first pressurized tests of its in-house space suits with NASA crew members. While non-insiders have yet to catch a glimpse of the company’s suits, those lucky enough to have stolen a glance have indicated that they look awesome. As the company progresses to actual vacuum testing of the suits, fans can likely look forward to a reveal. While we don’t yet have a view of SpaceX suits, the July 24th Commercial Crew update did provide the first public photos of SpaceX’s crew access arm, set to be installed at the LC-39A launch pad later this year.

Aside from an array of milestones ahead for the company, the only major tasks yet to be finished are design finalization for Crew Dragon’s seat mechanisms and control displays. SpaceX’s Demonstration 1 and 2 launch dates of February and June 2018 respectively remain steady as of this late-July update. Delays are always possible and even likely, but chances are good that SpaceX will be ready to conduct the first launch of crew to the ISS before the end of next year.

Pokemon Go Fest Chicago: Live stream times and Challenge Event schedule | Gaming | Entertainment

Pokemon Go Fest starts at around 9am CST in Chicago for some Trainers, with the official Twitch channel confirming that as the start of their schedule.

It’s unclear if the stream will kick off straight away, however, the opening ceremony has been confirmed to go live at around 10:30am.

“Join us live from Grant Park in Chicago, IL for Pokemon Go Fest 2017! We will be covering the event action, gym battles, and be monitoring the progress of the world wide event,” the official Twitch page explains.

The Pokemon Go live stream will include Rachel Quirico Britanni Johnson, Kelly Link and Brandon Martyn as hosts.

It should be noted that early access to the Pokemon Go event in Chicago begins at 9am CST, general admittance begins at 10am.

For those in the UK, that means that the Pokemon Go live stream could start at around 3pm BST, with the UK around six hours ahead.

For those attending, the line for entry at Pokemon Go Fest will start at 6 A.M. on July 22. Lining up prior to 6 A.M. will be prohibited.

POKEMON GO CHALLENGE SCHEDULE:

The big reason for Trainers to watch the action unfold from Chicago will be the first official Legendary Raid.

Players attending the event will get the first go to battle one of the game’s top Pocket Monsters, although fans at home will get rewards too.

To actually unlock the new Pokemon Go Raids, there will be a series of challenges that will need to be completed.

The first is a catch challenge, where players in Chicago will need to grab certain types during timed windows, with the added help of players from around the world.

If they manage to catch enough Pokemon during the Pokemon Go Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park.

If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary-type, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokemon Go Fest.

There are currently three Challenge windows scheduled for the Pokemon Go Fest:

Challenge window 1: 5pm to 5:30pm BST – (11am CST)

Challenge Window 2: 7pm to 7:30pm BST – (1pm CST)

Challenge Window 3: 9pm to 9:30pm BST – (3pm CST)

If this is completed, the first Legendary Raids battle should commence around midnight BST, 6PM CST.

This officially has an hour-long slot, so it could begin at different times, depending on what happens on the ground.

Niantic have confirmed that there are six different local rewards for the Catch Challenge for trainers globally, while there will be special ones activated for Pokemon Go Fest players.

Another perk for attending will be unlocking the first exclusive Pokémon Go Fest Chicago medal for player profile pages.

“Work together with thousands of Trainers in the park and millions around the world to complete challenges throughout the day and unlock amazing in-game rewards globally.”

If everything goes well, Legendary Raids could begin on July 23, which will manifest as Special Eggs, found at Gyms.

“If Trainers and their team are able to successfully defeat a Legendary Raid Boss, they’ll have the opportunity to catch a Legendary Pokémon of their own.

“While Legendary Pokémon will help them take on the toughest Raid Bosses and Gym Battles, they’re not willing to leave their Trainer’s side, so they can’t be left to defend Gyms.”

The iPhone 8’s software and release schedule causing ‘sense of panic’ at Apple, tips report

As usual at this time in a new iPhone development cycle, rumors start piling up that Apple is running into production problems with the new editions. Then comes the grand September unveiling, and the issues seem magically resolved, although with new designs we sometimes witness supply bottlenecks for a month or two after release, yet the dust settles down by Thanksgiving on average.

This year, however, there will likely be an iPhone 8 announced at the scene, in addition to the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, and in it there could be so many changes and unproven technologies, that it seems even Apple is running into trouble putting it all together. The latest in such reporting comes from a “source with knowledge of the situation,” and they state that Apple was in a full-blown “sense of panic” last month, stemming from the need to perfect the software that will drive the new tech in the iPhone 8.
First off, there have been problems with wireless charging. Granted, the source says that Apple isn’t using anything groundbreaking – inductive wireless charging of the Qi variety – but the company wants to make the process as seamless as possible, and that is turning to be an issue. It’s not the Broadcom hardware that’s at fault, but the software that manages the charging, it seems. If all else fails, Apple might be shipping the iPhone 8 with limited wireless charging abilities, tips the source, and then issue a software update for whatever it has up its sleeve regarding the technology.
This can’t happen with the rumored 3D face recognition tech that was supposed to replace Touch ID, however, as it is needed for authentication from the get go, and Apple has run into trouble making it work with the high degree of accuracy required. Still, the source is optimistic that this one will be perfected until launch, plus they think that Apple still has a chance of shipping the iPhone 8 with the tricky in-display finger scanner that will take the load off the 3D face recognition tech as a complementing affair.
Last but not least, there is the problem with the new bright OLED display that allows for the alleged all-screen format of the iPhone 8’s front. Samsung is supplying all of those, but it needs to ramp up production in the millions with the required quality of manufacturing, and the effort is still going on, apparently. Thus, the iPhone 8 may face a perfect storm of hardware and software quirks that need to be ironed out in a very short amount of time, so when the dust from the fall announcement settles, we may still be some time off from the full production schedule of the unique OLED iPhone. Oh, well, at the rumored $1000-$1200 starting price, depending on whose source you believe, there may not be many millions lining up for the all-screen iPhone from the very start anyway.

SpaceX is preparing to static fire test a Falcon 9 at the Vandenberg Air Force Base ahead of a mission to launch the next set of Iridium NEXT satellites. The test will set the stage for the potential of two launches within two days for SpaceX, as it realigns the launch date for the Falcon 9 that has already conducted a hot-fire test ahead of its BulgariaSat-1 mission.

Test, Test, Launch, Launch:

The previous plan was to launch the BulgariaSat-1 mission on Monday. However, an issue with a fairing valve resulted in SpaceX delaying the launch until NET (No Earlier Than) June 23.

The valve system – used to separate the two fairing halves that encapsulate and protect the payload during the initial phase – has redundancy built into the system. Elon Musk tweeted that it was “not worth taking a chance”, thus the valve is being replaced inside the 39A Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF).

The Falcon 9 had returned to the HIF following a successful seven second Static Fire test of its nine Merlin 1D engines and was undergoing the stack integration flow ahead of rollout when the issue was noted as part of the routine pre-rollout checks.

Interestingly, a surprise rollout of what is understood to be the same Falcon 9 took place on Monday evening, again – as is now common practice – without the payload.

While the identity of the booster has not been confirmed, the Falcon 9 was not expected to conduct a second static fire, based on the lack of required notices for KSC workers, per roadblocks and safety precautions relating to such tests. Sources also stress the original Static Fire test was without issue and the vehicle had passed its Launch Readiness Review (LRR).

While unconfirmed by SpaceX, it is understood the vehicle is at the pad to aid the testing of ground hydraulics in the 39A Ground Support Equipment (GSE) system. This element of the GSE has required some periodical work since 39A was reactivated for use with SpaceX launches.

With the launch delayed while engineers replace the valve on the fairing, the opportunity to use the rocket sat on the TEL with nothing to do for several days may have initiated this mooted Pad GSE test.

Once the Falcon 9 is back in the HIF, the pre-launch mating flow will take place ahead of rollout back up the 39A ramp – this time as an integrated stack – for launch within a two-hour window that opens at 14:10 local time on Friday.

Due to the delay to the BulgariaSat-1 mission, the next event for SpaceX is another Static Fire test, this time on the West Coast.

The Falcon 9 tasked with launching the next set of Iridium NEXT satellites will enjoy a 3.5-second firing on the SLC-4E pad at Vandenberg.

The window for the test was originally cited as 11 am local time, before it was realigned to target a T-0 of 1:30 pm local time. Static Fire tests have long windows to provide engineers an allowance for troubleshooting.

Confirmation of a good test will come via SpaceX on its social media channels, based on the results of the “quick look” data.

The SpaceX team will then head into the Launch Readiness Review (LRR) ahead of the Sunday launch attempt with the window opening at 13:25 pm local time.

SpaceX has the ability to continue the flow towards launch, despite the schedule change with the BulgariSat-1 pre-launch flow, due to two separate launch teams for its two – currently active – launch sites.

SpaceX’s mission control (MCC-X) in Hawthorne, California also holds the ability thanks to a recent configuration change that avoids any overlaps in procedures relating to the two individual missions taking place in close proximity.

These next two missions will set a record minimum gap between a pair of SpaceX launches, although due to the slip of the BulgariaSat-1 launch, a third closely schedule mission – with Intelsat 35e, which was scheduled to launch on July 1 – will obviously be pushed to the right.

That mission was working towards a June 26 Static Fire test. However, that is now impossible, with a set amount of days required for post launch activities that include safing the pad, conducting a Pad Shakedown Report – which documents and actions any required post-launch repairs to the pad – prior to the rollout of the next Falcon 9 set to launch from the historic pad.

Based on the minimum timeline – which has been achievable of late thanks to the superb performance of 39A during its SpaceX role – the flow for the Intelsat 35e mission is likely moving to the right on a day to day basis with the BulgariaSat-1 launch flow realignment.

While a new target date has yet to be filed with the Eastern Range for approval at the time of writing, these three upcoming launches are still set to mark a new launch manifest turnaround record for SpaceX, a sign of their improving launch cadence following the company’s return to flight after the loss of the Amos-6 payload and launch vehicle during a Static Fire test.

Notably, SLC-40 – which was largely destroyed in that accident – is showing signs it’s on the final leg towards re-activation. The biggest sign towards its return will be the sight of the new TEL (Transport/Erector/Launcher) at the pad. Parts of this hardware is understood to be already inside the SLC-40 HIF.

It is expected to be a version of the new TEL used at 39A, albeit catered for only Falcon 9 launches. The return to SLC-40 will free 39A’s TEL to be modified – as it was designed – for use with both Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rocket launches – the latter set to debut later this year.
