OxygenOS Open Beta 24/15 Released For the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

OnePlus has announced the release of OxygenOS Open Beta 24 and Open Beta 15 for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, respectively. Unlike the last update, which was loaded with a plethora of new features and UX improvements, this has a comparatively smaller changelog.

Speaking of the changes, the new update brings in “Soft” screen calibration mode, new boot animations, optimization to recent apps clearing, an update to Community app, and some bug fixing.

More importantly, though, the changelog for the update states that the recently discovered BlueBorne vulnerability has also been patched in this update. In case you are not aware, earlier this week, IoT security firm Armis Labs discovered a major Bluetooth vulnerability which could enable an attacker to gain unauthorized access to unpatched Android, iOS, Windows, and Linux devices. BlueBorne is pretty dangerous in a sense that the attacker doesn’t even need to pair to the target device nor it requires any user interaction in order to gain the full control of the target device.

OnePlus notes that they have to fixed this vulnerability with their own patch independent of the Android security update, and that some BlueBorne vulnerability scanners may fail to recognize their independent patch.

As always, if you’re already running the latest version of Open Beta, you can look forward to receiving this new update via OTA. If you aren’t, you can head over to the OnePlus download page for more details on how to manually flash the beta ROM on your device.

Here is the complete changelog for OxygenOS Open Beta 24/15:

  • Added “Soft” screen calibration
We’ve reverted the screen calibration and added the new calibration from last build as “soft.” You can enable the new calibration in the “display> screen” calibration section of settings
  • New boot animation
  • Optimized the clearing of recent apps

  • Updated Community app to V1.9.5
  • Minor bug fixes

Apple Started Developing A11 Bionic Chip When A8 Chip Was Released Three Years Ago

Shortly after Apple’s iPhone X event this week, the company’s silicon chief Johny Srouji and marketing chief Phil Schiller sat down for an interview about its new A11 Bionic chip with Mashable‘s editor-at-large Lance Ulanoff.

One interesting tidbit mentioned was that Apple began exploring and developing the core technologies in the A11 chip at least three years ago, when the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched with A8 chips.

Srouji told me that when Apple architects silicon, they start by looking three years out, which means the A11 Bionic was under development when Apple was shipping the iPhone 6 and its A8 chip. Back then we weren’t even talking about AI and machine learning at a mobile level and, yet, Srouji said, “The neural engine embed, it’s a bet we made three years ahead.”

Apple’s three-year roadmap can change if new features are planned, like the Super Retina HD Display in iPhone X.

“The process is flexible to changes,” said Srouji, who’s been with Apple since the first iPhone. If a team comes in with a request that wasn’t part of the original plan, “We need to make that happen. We don’t say, ‘No, let me get back to my road map and, five years later, I’ll give you something.”

Apple senior executives Phil Schiller, left, and Johny Srouji

In fact, Schiller praised Srouji’s team for its ability to “move heaven and earth” when the roadmap suddenly changes.

“There have been some critical things in the past few years, where we’ve asked Johny’s team to do something on a different schedule, on a different plan than they had in place for years, and they moved heaven and earth and done it, and it’s remarkable to see.”

A11 Bionic six-core chip has two performance cores that are 25 percent faster, and four high-efficiency cores that are 70 percent faster, than the A10 chip in iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Early benchmarks suggest the A11 Bionic is even on par with the performance of Apple’s latest 13-inch MacBook Pro models.

The A11 chip is more efficient at multi-threaded tasks thanks to a second-generation performance controller that is able to access all six of the cores simultaneously if a particular task demands it.

Gaming might use more cores, said Srouji, but something as simple as predictive texting, where the system suggests the next word to type, can tap into the high-performance CPUs, as well.

The A11 chip also has an Apple-designed neural engine that handles facial recognition for Face ID and Animoji, and other machine learning algorithms. The dual-core engine recognizes people, places, and objects, and processes machine learning tasks at up to 600 billion operations per second, according to Apple.

“When you look at applications and software, there are certain algorithms that are better off using a functional programming model,” said Srouji.

This includes the iPhone X’s new face tracking and Face ID as well as the augmented-reality-related object detection. All of them use neural networks, machine learning or deep learning (which is part of machine learning). This kind of neural processing could run on a CPU or, preferably, a GPU. “But for these neural networking kinds of programming models, implementing custom silicon that’s targeted for that application, that will perform the exact same tasks, is much more energy efficient than a graphics engine,” said Srouji.

Apple’s new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X are all equipped with an A11 chip.

In related news, Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science has announced that Srouji will take part in a distinguished industry lecture on Monday, September 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. local time.

Plan to distrust Symantec website certificates released, which is no longer its concern

Dive Brief:

  • Google’s Chrome team this week released its formal plan to distrust Symantec’s website security and certificate products, the company said. Over the past several years, the Chrome team had lost confidence in Symantec’s infrastructure because of a pattern of concerns around how the company issued security certificates.
  • In investigations which began earlier this year, the Chrome team found numerous Symantec-issued certificates did not comply with baseline industry-developed standards. The security company had tapped several organizations to issue certificates but they lacked oversight, which resulted in “security deficiencies,” according to Google.
  • Beginning with Chrome 66, which will debut to Chrome Beta users in March 2018, Chrome will remove trust for Symantec certificates issued prior to June 1, 2016, according to the plan. By December 1, once Symantec transitions its certificate business over to DigiCert infrastructure, certificates issued from older Symantec infrastructure will not be trusted. Symantec could not be reached for comment prior to publication.

Dive Insight:

Google officially downgraded trust in Symantec certificates in March, which the security company called “exaggerated and misleading.” The move negatively impacted the security firm’s reputation during a time when it was trying to regain traction in the market. Large, legacy security firms have had to navigate a changing security landscape, while competing against emerging vendors that can target the market in more agile ways.

But the website certificate business is no longer Symantec’s concern. In August, the company reached an agreement with DigiCert to sell its website security and PKI solutions business for $950 million.

So while Google has a formal plan in place, which would permit the security firm ample time to modernize its infrastructure and meet industry standards, web certificates are no longer Symantec’s concern. Instead, DigiCert’s new “managed partner infrastructure” will be able to issue trusted certificates, according to the announcement.

Companies are placing more emphasis on end-to-end, ensuring everything from websites to back-end infrastructure is locked down. When an organization like Google downgrades trust in an organization’s product, it is sure to cause ripple effects across product lines and impact a firm’s reputation long term.

Google has pushed for more companies to move toward HTTPS protocol, displaying an icon in Chrome when a site cannot be trusted. HTTP can leave websites vulnerable to eavesdropping and content manipulation, vulnerabilities eliminated with the transition over to the more secure HTTPS.

As of March, more than half of all websites support HTTPS, but leading vendors are pushing for more websites to make the transition. To do that, customers have to ensure security certificates issued by vendors are trushworthy.

iTunes 12.7 Released, Removes App Store

Apple has released iTunes 11.7 for Mac and Windows users, a point release update that brings some notable changes to the music and media player app.

The new version of iTunes adds support for iOS 11 while simultaneously removing the iOS App Store from being included in iTunes. Additionally, iTunes 12.7 removes the ability to sync iOS apps and ringtones on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch via iTunes on the desktop. Instead, Apple wants you to manage and download iOS apps from the iPhone or iPad itself via the native iOS App Store application.

Users can download the latest iTunes release from the software update mechanism of iTunes itself, via the Mac App Store Updates tab, or from the apple.com iTunes download page here.

The release notes accompanying the iTunes 12.7 download are as follows:

The new iTunes focuses on music, movies, TV shows, and audiobooks. It adds support for syncing iOS 11 devices and includes new features for –

– Apple Music. Now discover music with friends. Members can create profiles and follow each other to see music they are listening to and any playlists they’ve shared.

– Podcasts. iTunes U collections are now part of the Apple Podcasts family. Search and explore free educational content produced by leading schools, universities, museums, and cultural institutions all in one place.

If you previously used iTunes to sync apps or ringtones on your iOS device, use the new App Store or Sounds Settings on iOS to redownload them without your Mac.

When you launch iTunes 12.7 you will see a pop-up window with an alert informing the user that iTunes has been “updated to focus on music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks” and telling the user to use App Store or Sound Settings in iOS to deal with apps and ringtones.

It’s worth mentioning that iTunes 12.6.x is currently compatible with iOS 11, though that may change when the final version of iOS 11 is released to the public on September 19.

NASA just released this absolutely breathtaking image of the solar eclipse in infrared

While millions across the continental US turned their eclipse glasses to the sky to watch the Sun disappear behind the Moon last Monday, NASA scientists took to the skies to get a much broader view of the event.

They’ve now released a few of their images taken from 15,240 metres (50,000 feet), including a spectacular infrared view of the eclipse in totality, and our limited human eyes aren’t worthy of the view.

Not only are these some of the most spectacular images you’ll see of the eclipse, but they’re also giving scientists a rare opportunity to study the surface temperature of Mercury, as well as probe the Sun’s mysterious outer atmosphere.

This is the eclipse at the moment of totality in infrared:

And here’s a high-speed visible light image of the eclipse, captured using Southern Research’s Airborne Imaging and Recording Systems (AIRS) and DyNAMITE telescopes:

PLANET 233 18 20 32 500 visible 5214Southern Research/NASA

The images were captured from two NASA WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft positioned at 15,240 metres (50,000 feet) as the total solar eclipse occurred over the US.

“The visible and infrared data look spectacular,” said one of the team, Amir Caspi from Southwest Research Institute.

“We’re already seeing some surprising features, and we are very excited to learn what the detailed analysis will reveal.”

The aim of the mission was to gather valuable data on the Sun’s corona – the aura of plasma that surrounds our star – as well as the temperature of Mercury.

Mercury is particularly difficult to study because of its proximity to the Sun, so having the Sun’s light blotted out momentarily by the Moon gave researchers a rare opportunity to gather infrared data on the planet – enabling them to estimate for the first time the surface temperatures over the planet’s night side.

The darkness also allowed the team a chance to study the atmosphere above the Sun’s visible surface. The faint light from the corona is usually overpowered by the intense light coming from the Sun itself, so an eclipse is the perfect time to take detailed measurements.

“This is the best observed eclipse ever,” said one of the researchers, Dan Seaton, from the University of Colorado.

“With the results from the WB-57s and complementary observations from space and other experiments on the ground we have an opportunity to answer some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of the corona.”

But if you think these pictures look good, just imagine how it felt to be up in one of the WB-57 aircraft while taking them.

“The view of the eclipse from aboard the WB-57 was fantastic,” said Don Darrow from Southern Research, who was on board during the eclipse.

“I was able to see the eclipse from the sensors aboard the plane and then look up and see it directly with my own eyes. I had one of the best views of the eclipse on the planet. It was truly an awe inspiring flight.”

In addition to this latest series, NASA has also released this incredible gif showing the view eclipse from its Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which is in orbit 4,828 km (3,000 miles) above Earth’s surface.

Due to its positioning at the time of the clipse, the SDO only saw 14 percent of the Sun blocked by the Moon, rather than the total eclipse witnessed by those in the perfect path across the US (most US residents saw 60 percent blockage or more). But it still looks pretty incredible.

Looking in the other direction, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this incredible image from its orbit around the Moon, showing the Moon’s shadow blotting out the light for a large portion of the US.

If you missed this eclipse and have major FOMO right now, don’t worry, here’s when the next one’s happening near you.
