HTC cuts Vive rate to $600 as an solution to Facebook’s Oculus Rift discount rates | VentureBeat | AR/VR

In preparation for the upcoming holiday getaway time, HTC announced a everlasting rate reduction for its Vive digital fact headset. Starting nowadays, it will drop from $800 to $600.

The announcement will come a thirty day period or so immediately after Facebook slashed the charges for the Oculus Rift headset and Oculus Touch controllers, bundling them for $400. HTC states its go isn’t in response to Facebook, but instead to check out to get a lot more shoppers fascinated in what’s even now pretty new tech. However VR components could generate $3.6 billion this calendar year, buyer adoption has been slower than in the beginning projected. Early trailblazers like AltspaceVR have shuttered and VR startups are treading drinking water. HTC Vive government Dan O’Brien states that lowering the rate point is just a single component to bringing VR to a broader viewers.

“We truly strongly feel this is heading to improve buyer adoption, create a more healthy marketplace for material creators and builders, and create a awesome foundation for our accent partners and resolution partners to also occur in and do a lot more issues with us more than the next calendar year,” explained O’Brien in a cellphone connect with with GamesBeat.

In addition to rate point, O’Brien states that material is really crucial. HTC’s technique to tempting in new shoppers is to present a totally free thirty day period of its Viveport subscription provider. Viveport subscribers decide on 5 titles every single thirty day period from a library of 250 applications and online games these as Google’s Tilt Brush, Richie’s Plank Encounter, and Everest VR. O’Brien also phone calls out blockbuster titles that are set to launch later this calendar year.

“This calendar year in Q4, we’re looking at for the initial time legitimate triple-A caliber material coming to marketplace, with the introduction of Fallout VR and Doom VFR,” explained O’Brien, “so now we’re heading to see individuals big IPs prolonged-participating in sessions get in, and I believe that’s heading to make a big variance as perfectly.”

Vive is known for its area-scale capabilities, which help players to go around a digital room, as perfectly as peripherals like the Vive Tracker, which can transform products into VR peripherals. While builders have experienced obtain to the Tracker considering that March 2017, a buyer model is set to hit cabinets later this calendar year. Stephanie Llamas, vice president of investigation and system at sector analyst SuperData Investigation, states that the rate drop could not be adequate to motivate new shoppers to flock to the Vive — at least not on a mass scale.

“It’s even now an high priced machine that involves higher-conclude components, so the viewers isn’t heading to transform also substantially,” Llamas explained in an e-mail. “The shoppers buying a Vive at a reduced rate now may possibly not have been the initial adopters but they are even now early ones. And now that a lot more persons have experienced a opportunity to check out VR, tech savvy shoppers want that in their house.”

The Vive involves a Laptop with higher-conclude specs, which can also be a further barrier to entry. A VR-ready laptop has to be 7 situations a lot more highly effective than a typical gaming rig, according to Nvidia. A tutorial from electronics retailer Newegg demonstrates that you can establish a VR-ready desktop for $700, but that involves the specialized know-how. An off-the-shelf equipment can conclude up costing any place from $1,150 with the Dell Alienware Aurora to $2,500 with the HP Omen X.

Llamas states that the shoppers who are buying Vive headsets will most likely be eager to commit on accessories, considering that they’ve previously invested in it: “Once persons purchase a machine at a $600 price point, they are a lot less sensitive to the expenses of peripherals. The expense upfront is previously big, so it is truly worth it to commit a bit a lot more to refine the expertise.”

Google Fit v1.70 brings workout history, audio alerts, automatic heart rate tracking, and more to Android Wear [APK Download]

An update to Google Fit began rolling out to both phones and Android Wear this week. In terms of changes, watches took the lead on this release with a short list of fairly significant additions, including audio alerts during runs, updates to the workout mode, a new screen for workout history, and even automatic heart rate tracking for some recent models. While phones weren’t left out entirely, the only notable addition is a new app shortcut for handsets running Nougat and above.

What’s New

Official Changelog: For Android Wear:

  • Track your activity using the redesigned workout mode, and review summaries of past activities on Android Wear
  • Hear spoken announcements from Android Wear while you’re running
  • Automatically measure and track your heartrate throughout the day on the LG Watch Sport and Huawei Watch 2 (more devices are coming soon)

Unofficial Changelog: For Phones

  • New app shortcut: Log weight

Wear: Workout history

Watches aren’t the best place to look at lots of data, but if you need a quick reminder of your recent activities, it might be easier than digging your phone out of a bag. That’s now possible thanks to a new workout history screen. It’s basically a lite version of the timeline on the phone app.

The latest entry is located near the bottom of Fit’s main screen, followed by a button that opens a longer workout history that runs back through several entries.

Wear: Redesigned running mode

Logging those workouts is also a bit different in the new version. Previously, the top of the screen was filled with the main workout metrics, followed by a screen of actions. The new version makes a bold choice by pulling your clock and a pause button to the top and pushing all of the metrics down to a second page. It does make the duration more visible and the pause button is easier to hit without , but at the cost of useful information like distance and heart rate.

Wear: Automatic heart rate tracking (on some watches)

screen_heartrate1screen_heartrate2

Many of Android Wear’s early adopters picked up the Moto 360. It wasn’t the first watch to include a heart rate sensor, but it was the first to offer continuous automatic tracking throughout the day. Since then, OEMs have avoided doing this to preserve battery life; but now it seems Google Fit is bringing it back, albeit very selectively.

Google’s changelog specifies that persistent heart rate monitoring only runs on the LG Watch Sport and Huawei Watch 2, but more models will be enabled in the future. I would assume the developers are testing each model for battery consumption, and possibly tuning the settings to make sure they won’t die too quickly.

There is one notable problem with this implementation: There’s no way to turn it off. No, really, a toggle to disable continuous monitoring isn’t available for those that don’t want it. I feel like this has to be an oversight and it should be fixed in the next release, especially as more watches are supported in the future.

It’s worth mentioning that continuous monitoring is now also displayed at the bottom of the end-of-workout screen, including both your max and average heart rate.

Wear: Spoken announcements

This one should be familiar to anybody that has Google Fit’s spoken announcements enabled on their phones, they’re now also available on watches. Note: This is limited to models equipped with with speakers, so it won’t work if your only form of audio is a Bluetooth connection. – Thanks, Ian Lake!

You can go into the Settings screen in Google Fit to configure the intervals or turn them off if you’re not a fan.

App shortcut: Log weight

We can switch to the phone version of Fit for the final addition. There is now a second app shortcut that leads directly to the weight logging screen. If you like keeping track, but want to do it with fewer taps, this one is for you.

App shortcuts technically require Android Nougat 7.1 and above, but this one was implemented as a static shortcut, so it also works on older versions of Android if you’re using one of the handful of third-party launchers with homegrown support for app shortcuts.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

CopyCat malware infects 14M devices, shows ‘unprecedented success rate’

A massive new malware threat, known as CopyCat has infected 14 million devices, rooting some 8 million of them in the process, according to a blog post from Check Point researchers. In two short months, CopyCat has earned $1.5 million for the attackers behind it.

CopyCat targets Android devices and it makes money by stealing advertising revenues, the post said. The malware has infected devices around the world, but it has seen the biggest impact in Southeast Asia.

Check Point called CopyCat a “fully developed malware” that is able to gain root access. The post noted that it then has the ability to inject code into Zygote, the app launching daemon in Android, in order to gain control over the victim’s device.

Once it has control over Zygote, CopyCat makes its money by fraudulently installing apps with its own ID. It then can display fraudulent ads that are difficult to track down by the user, the post said.

Of the infected devices, 3.8 million were used to serve fraudulent ads, and 4.9 million had fraudulent apps installed on them, the post said. CopyCat was able to steal credit for the installed apps on 4.4 million of the infected devices.

It should be noted that Check Point itself provides IT security products. The firm first came across CopyCat when it had attacked a client of Check Point, prompting the company to investigate the malware. After receiving certain information from the server’s behind CopyCat, the Check Point team reverse-engineered it.

Third-party app stores and certain phishing scams were the primary culprits behind CopyCat, as it didn’t seem to have infiltrated the Google Play store. The researchers alerted Google to the campaign, and Google said it was able to stop it.

The number of devices that currently host the malware is much lower than at the campaign’s peak in spring 2016. However, “devices infected by CopyCat may still be affected by the malware even today,” the post said.

Ultimately, more than half of the infected devices were rooted, due to old security patches the post said. Android users should stay up-to-date on updating their OS, and rely on proper security hygiene practices to stay protected.

The 3 big takeaways for TechRepublic readers

  1. The new CopyCat malware infected 14 million devices, rooting some 8 million of them in the process, and earning $1.5 million for attackers.
  2. After rooting the device, CopyCat took over the Zygote daemon to install apps and serve fraudulent ads to make money.
  3. CopyCat had a high success rate with rooting devices because of old vulnerabilities. Android users should update their OS and stay current with all patches.

What Is the Drop Rate for Special Raid Battle Items?

After participating in Raid Battles, Pokemon Go players have the opportunity to receive special items. But you won’t always receive the same items every time, so what is the drop rate for the Raid Battle items? Which ones are given out frequently, and which ones are more rare?

It appears that the frequency at which you receive Raid Battle items depends on what tier level the gym is. On Reddit this week, a survey was conducted among over 1,200 players, with these fans making note of how often they received the three special items: Golden Razz Berries, Rare Candy, and Technical Machines.

For Tier 1 Raid Battles, 75 percent of players received at least one Golden Razz Berry, while 25 percent received none at all. Meanwhile, 78 percent of players received at least one Rare Candy, while about 22 percent received none at all. But when it came to Technical Machines, just 11 percent received this item, while an overwhelming 89 percent of players did not.

For Tier 2 Raid Battles, about 78 percent of players received at least one Golden Razz Berry, while 22 percent received none at all. In addition, 80 percent received at least one Rare Candy, while about 20 percent received none at all. And once again, Technical Machines are rare, with just 14 percent of players getting one and 86 percent not getting any. As you can see, the drop rate of all of the items goes up just a few percentage points with Tier 2 Raid Battles.

For Tier 3 Raid Battles, it becomes much more common to receive these items, as 87 percent of players received a Golden Razz Berry, while only 13 percent received none at all. And 82 percent of players received a Rare Candy, while just about 18 percent didn’t receive any. Technical Machines are now easier to come by as well, with 40 percent of players getting a Technical Machine but 60 percent still not getting any.

Finally, for Tier 4 Raid Battles, just about 90 percent of players received a Golden Razz Berry, with just 10 percent not getting at least one of these items. Plus, 88 percent received at least one Rare Candy, with 12 percent not receiving any. And at this level, the majority of players go home with a Technical Machine, with 64 percent getting one of these items and 36 percent not getting one.

As you can see, Golden Razz Berries and Rare Candies are commonly given out after winning at all four Raid Battle tiers, whereas for a Technical Machine, it’s technically possible to earn one at each level, but they’re relatively rare until you get up to tiers three and four.
