Neglected Pure Connect speaker app silenced in iOS 11’s war on 32-bit • The Register

Wireless speaker maker Pure appears to be more the first casualties in Apple’s war on 32-bit iOS apps.

Pure’s 32-bit Connect software for iThings won’t work on Apple’s new 64-bit-only iOS 11, meaning folks using Cupertino’s latest firmware and handsets can’t control their space-age hi-fis. The audio remote-control app joins various games, utilities and other 32-bit-only programs that are not allowed to run on iOS 11 and later.

Punters are urged to install the latest version of Apple’s operating system because it contains security bug patches. By upgrading or buying a new iPhone, folks have to ditch any old apps that haven’t been rebuilt as 64-bit ARMv8 executables, which includes Pure’s.

Rejecting Sonos’ private data slurp basically bricks bloke’s boombox

Now Pure hardware owners who have moved to iOS 11 are complaining that their gizmos are “useless” without the Connect app to control them. Pure did not respond to El Reg‘s request for comment, and has not said when it expects a 64-bit app will be released. Android versions of Pure Connect are not affected, of course.

According to Pure’s website, a fix is in the works and an FAQ of workarounds via Wi-Fi can be found here. It may take some time for a rebuilt application to emerge as the people who wrote the code for the manufacturer are no longer in business, apparently.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, including the closure of our third-party app developer, and the subsequent release of Apple’s iOS11, a few of you may be experiencing issues accessing the Pure Connect app,” Pure told customers.

“Unfortunately, Apple’s decision to remove support for apps created prior to 2015, which don’t natively run in 64-bit mode, will undoubtedly affect many apps, including our own.”

Part of the problem, it seems, is Pure’s inability to maintain and update its own apps, and it is most likely not alone in this respect: companies that have outsourced their mobile app programming are finding themselves locked out of iOS 11 because they can’t get the code or the tools or the people to rebuild their contract-developed software. The iOS App Store shows that the last update to Pure Connect was on June 25, 2015, more than two years ago, so Pure has been without a mobile developer for a while, it seems.

So on the one hand, it’s a shame to see organizations that were relying on outside developers now being caught out by the iOS crackdown. On the other hand, it’s not an overnight change.

You can’t fault Apple for springing this one on companies and programmers. The Cupertino giant has been warning of the 64-bit changeover for years, and since early 2015 all new apps and updates have been required to be submitted to the online store in 64-bit mode. In March, the iOS 10.3 update also alerted world-plus-dog that all future versions of the firmware would not support apps compiled in 32-bit mode.

Apple’s last 32-bit-processor iPhone was the iPhone 5C, released in 2013 and discontinued in 2015.

“‘Due to circumstances beyond our control’ – yeah, and you’ve only had two years to update your app,” one Reg reader scoffed at Pure in an email to us earlier today. “That’s my Jongo speakers rendered useless after only a year.” ®

Motorola Rolling Out Android Nougat Update to Moto X Pure Edition

For those still holding onto a Moto X Pure Edition in the US, you will be happy to know that your device won’t be stuck on Android Marshmallow forever. It appears that Motorola is finally rolling out the much-awaited Android 7.0 Nougat update to the Moto X Pure Edition in the US. The company hasn’t made any formal announcement about this software rollout yet, but many Moto X Pure Edition owners in the US are now reporting that they have received this update on their device.

The update is based on Android 7.0, carries build number NPH25.200-22 and also brings along the September’s security patches to the device. We wish Motorola had at least rolled out Android 7.1.1 so that users wouldn’t miss out on features like App Shortcuts and rounded icons. But anyway, it’s still better than running two-year-old Android Marshmallow.

It’s quite surprising to see Motorola rolling out Android Nougat after such a long time. The September 2016 security update was the last update rolled out to the Motorola X Pure Edition; since then there wasn’t a single software update for the device.

The Android Nougat update has been a long time coming for the Moto X Pure Edition. After the Android 6.0 update, it seemed as if Motorola had no intention to provide further software support for the Motorola X Pure. However, to everyone’s surprise, the company rolled out Android Nougat to the Moto X Style in Brazil back in July. And finally, it’s now available in the US, too.

If you’re sporting a Motorola X Pure Edition device in the US, you can look forward to receiving this update in the coming days. However, if you don’t want to wait for the automatic OTA rollout, you can flash the official OTA update zip captured by XDA Senior Member gokart2 from the stock recovery to manually update your device.

Moto Z2 Engage in overview: Fantastic battery lifestyle, pure Android makes it 1 of the ideal Moto telephones : Assessments, News

Motorola has had a very abundant and storied history in the smartphone environment. The enterprise was 1 of the several that could obstacle Nokia when it was at the top of the activity and is remembered for classics these kinds of as the Moto Razr. Ever since the arrival of contact display smartphones and the company’s adoption of Android, it has had a rather rocky history.

Google’s ownership yielded the distinctive and critically acclaimed Moto X sequence of smartphones which have been then ultimately killed off by Lenovo when they acquired over the enterprise in 2014. Very last yr Lenovo introduced their individual consider on what a Motorola flagship Android telephone need to bring to the desk with the hanging modular Z sequence of smartphones. Now the first of the sequels has arrived in the type of the Moto Z2 Engage in and let’s see how effectively it stacks up towards the competition.

A modern, elegant and refined style and design

The two the Moto Z and Z Engage in have been fulfilled with vital acclaim and the Z Engage in in individual became a sleeper strike many thanks to its great battery lifestyle, good functionality and optimised computer software. Nevertheless, the Z Engage in was fulfilled with criticism from a great deal of quarters for its thick and bulky style and design and scratch-susceptible glass back again. Lenovo appears to be to have taken cognisance of these criticisms and built the Z2 Engage in a lot slimmer and lighter than its predecessor (five.9mm vs 7mm). The enterprise has also eschewed the glass back again in favour of a sleeker and aluminium back again panel, which is a lot considerably less of a scratch magnet than in advance of.

What makes the redesign even extra excellent is the actuality that Motorola has managed to make the Z2 Engage in nearly as slender as the primary Moto Z with no acquiring to sacrifice the a lot-needed 3.5mm headphone jack. The style and design has also witnessed a several polishes in this article and there — the edges are extra rounded which makes the system a lot easier to maintain in the hand and the fingerprint sensor is more substantial and a lot a lot easier to use.

All in all, Lenovo has refined, tweaked and polished the style and design of the Moto Z2 Engage in to a point the place the smartphone feels very elegant, modern and suave. What is fantastic is that Lenovo has managed to infuse their individual style and design ideas with no getting rid of the Motorola style and design ethos which we all know and appreciate. Indeed, the dimpled back again is long gone and may possibly hardly ever return but it is a sacrifice well worth earning.

The metallic back again panel properties the rear camera whose bulge has grow to be even more substantial than in advance of many thanks to the slimmer style and design. Thankfully, the bulge can be hidden with a Moto Type shell which also provides a lot needed grip as the metallic back again is really slippery. Beneath the camera lens is the legendary Motorola emblem, below which are the speak to details for the Moto Mods which are a controversial aspect of the smartphone’s style and design.

Some, like me, like the bare gold speak to details and come to feel they include a particular industrial aspect to the style and design. Even though other individuals come to feel that they make the smartphone look unfinished. All over again, for them, a Type shell can resolve that dilemma in a jiffy. Motorola has cleverly built-in the antenna strains in a dim colored plastic band all over the back again panel which provides a lot needed style and design flair.

Fact to be instructed, the smartphone has no small business remaining as quickly as it is with the processor it is working. The Moto Z2 Engage in is the testomony to how considerably the mix of a fairly capable and productive processor and optimised computer software can get you in conditions of functionality

The front in an all glass affair with the earpiece, front camera, twin LED flash and numerous sensors housed higher than the exhibit. The loudspeaker is built-in into the earpiece and is really loud but receives shrill and tinny at substantial volumes. Beneath the exhibit is the fingerprint sensor which is incredibly precise and snappy and ranks amongst the ideal fingering sensors out there in the industry.

The correct edge is barren even though the remaining edge properties the buttons for quantity up, quantity down and ability. The 3 buttons are really tiny and recessed and are not that pleasant to use. Even though they are of the same dimension, Motorola has fortunately included a texture on the ability button which allows distinguish it from the quantity buttons in the dim.

Bright and vivid exhibit

The smartphone will come with a five.five-inch Tremendous AMOLED exhibit with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top for safety towards scratches. The exhibit is bright and tremendous vivid. Some may possibly be turned off by the tremendous-saturated colours but for them Moto has integrated a handy ‘Standard’ method in the configurations which makes issues look a lot extra real looking.

The viewing angles are on point, the exhibit is sharp and the brightness stages, equally minimum and maximum are satisfactory. Just one dilemma I had with the exhibit was that the brightness slider is very erratic and not at all linear – brightness increases and decreases in bursts and is challenging to handle.

Moto has also included a several nifty features below the Moto Display moniker. The first, called ‘Night Display’ acts as a blue gentle filter which when turned on, receives instantly activated based on person described times. The 2nd called ‘Moto Display’ will allow notifications to fade in and out even though the display in off and is very handy to test what is new with no acquiring to open up your smartphone.

The magic of components-computer software optimisation

On paper, the Z2 Engage in is not as powerful as smartphones like the OnePlus 3T. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 626 processor clocked at two.2GHz paired with 4GB of RAM, a 3,000mAh battery with Turbo Charge assist and the Adreno 506 GPU. Moreover, it will come with 64GB of interior storage which can be expanded up to 2TB by way of a microSD card.

Also Go through: Motorola Moto Z2 Engage in with metallic body, Snapdragon 626 launched in India at Rs 27,999

Fact to be instructed, the smartphone has no small business remaining as quickly as it is with the processor it is working. The smartphone is the testomony to how considerably the mix of a fairly capable and productive processor and optimised computer software can get you in conditions of functionality. The smartphone handles day to day jobs with aplomb and hardly slows down. The more gigabyte of RAM over the Moto Z Engage in truly allows when it will come to multi-tasking and in conditions when you have a lot of tabs open up in chrome.

Indeed, pushing the system very tough does consequence in some slowdown and lags, but total the functionality is really snappy. What contributes to the same is the absence of any resource sucking and laggy OEM pores and skin as the Z2 Engage in runs on an nearly stock develop of Android Nougat. Except for a several first-social gathering Moto branded apps, Motorola has remaining Android nearly untouched.

When it will come to gaming, the smartphone is once more really capable. Informal video games like Candy Crush Saga and Subway Surfers operate flawlessly and even resource hefty video games like Fashionable Beat five are incredibly playable with only the very occasional judder or dropped body.

Motorola’s suite of apps on board are truly very beneficial. The features associated to the exhibit we have currently talked about higher than. In addition to those there are Motorola’s legendary gestures these kinds of as twist for opening the camera, double karate chop for turning on the torch and flip for do not disturb which are truly beneficial and are stellar additions to stock Android.

Just remarkable battery lifestyle

As opposed to the Moto Z Engage in, nearly every single part of the Moto Z2 Engage in has witnessed an update. Nevertheless,  the battery of the Moto Z2 Engage in has witnessed a considerable 15 for each cent decrease — from 3,510mAh in the Z Engage in to 3,000mAh in the Z2 Engage in. This signifies that, on paper at-minimum, the Moto Z2 Play’s battery lifestyle need to be disappointing.

The actual lifestyle effects are as considerably away from that statement as attainable. The battery lifestyle of the Moto Z2 Engage in is unquestionably remarkable — 1 of the ideal I have witnessed on an Android smartphones — bested only by its predecessor, the Moto Z Engage in. During the week I made use of the telephone as my each day driver, the smartphone constantly shipped a display on time of around  6-seven hours with all over 40 for each cent of the battery remaining at evening.

Just one day I determined to preserve employing the smartphone till it ultimately died. And that too fairly intensively I need to include — hours of YouTube videos, tons of photographs, streaming Hotstar and Netflix and downloading tunes on Google Engage in Tunes. The smartphone last but not least died on me soon after 19 hours of use with an remarkable nine hours 21 minutes of display on time.

So certainly, even though the battery lifestyle may possibly not be as good as the Moto Z Engage in, which has unquestionably stellar endurance, the Z2 Engage in nonetheless has remarkable battery lifestyle and is a fantastic option for highway warriors. The smartphone, with fairly average use will conveniently very last you two times on a solitary charge and is a fantastic example of how a fairly tiny sized battery unit can be built to very last for lengthy many thanks to an productive processor and optimised computer software.

Great, if not spectacular cameras

The Moto Z2 Play’s optics have witnessed a main improvement as when compared to its predecessor. The smartphone will come with a 12MP camera at the rear which will come with an aperture of f/, twin pixel focusing and a new laser focusing program which the enterprise statements effects in better very low-gentle pictures.

The smartphone excels in macro pictures, with the resultant photos acquiring a sharp and effectively described concentration. The camera’s automobile-concentration latches on to the matter very speedily and sweetly softens the history with no any need to have of guide intervention. Pictures taken outdoor and in conditions with average to satisfactory gentle switch out incredibly effectively, with natural colours, good contrast and negligible sound. In actuality, in effectively lit conditions, the camera can conveniently compete with smartphones higher than its shell out quality. The photos are a bit soft occasionally although.

Wherever the rear camera struggles is in very low gentle conditions. Pictures taken indoor with considerably less than satisfactory gentle are soft and have a great deal of sound. They close up on the lookout a bit like watercolour paintings — it appears to be that the ISP (Picture sensing processor) struggles to put collectively detail in very low gentle. The camera can file video clip in up to 4K Extremely High definition at thirty frames for each 2nd. Online video is higher than average but optical impression stabilisation is sorely skipped. Not like a lot of other smartphones, it does not overheat that a lot although shooting in 4K.

On the front, there is a 5MP camera which has an aperture of f/two.two. The actuality that the front camera also will come with a twin-LED flash need to make the Z2 Engage in an appealing proposition for selfie aficionados. Even though the 5MP camera may possibly look a bit inadequate on paper, it bring to thoughts the maxim that extra megapixels do not make a camera fantastic.

The camera is not spectacular but it is higher than average. It provides good photographs that are effectively exposed and with satisfactory detail. But there are better front cameras out there. Far better very low gentle functionality would have been most well-liked although but that is compensated by the presence of the Twin-LED front flash which is really powerful. All in all, the front camera is extra than satisfactory for social media use.

The Moto Z2 Engage in is an incredibly good smartphone from Motorola and does nearly almost everything correct. It is unquestionably Lenovo-owned Motorola’s ideal smartphone nonetheless and details toward fantastic issues from the enterprise, at-minimum when it will come to their flagships. Only several issues like the rear camera’s poor very low-gentle functionality, overpriced Moto Mods (they range from Rs 1,999 to a whopping Rs 19,999) and a tinny loudspeaker enable it down.

The smartphone has unquestionably remarkable battery lifestyle, a slender, gentle and modern style and design, enlargement capabilities through Moto Mods, a bright and tremendous vivid exhibit, surprisingly good functionality, a cleanse and snappy person interface and smart computer software. Moto Mods are the ideal implementation of the modular strategy and perform very effectively, even if they are a bit overpriced.

The Z2 Engage in may possibly not be as powerful as the OnePlus 3T but it ticks nearly all the correct containers and has all the fundamentals knocked down to a T. Soon after all, snappy functionality, great battery lifestyle, respectable cameras, optimised computer software and a good exhibit. Is just not that almost everything that 1 mainly needs in a smartphone? Welcome back again, Motorola.

Moto Z2 Engage in8.five/10

  • Great things
  • Outstanding battery lifestyle
  • Optimised components and computer software
  • Slender, modern style and design
  • Enlargement through Moto Mods
  • Negative things
  • Marginally average cameras
  • Mods are overpriced
  • Cell phone can be too vast for some

Moto X Pure Seems To Be Getting Android 7.0 Nougat

Moto’s last hurrah for the well-loved design conventions of the original Moto X lineup, the Moto X Pure, looks to finally be getting its update to Android 7.0 Nougat. The issue is that the update is apparently only hitting a small amount of users, leading some to believe that the update is actually part of a soak test, a very limited rollout meant to allow a select group of users to beta test the update one last time before it rolls out to all users. The update brings Google’s vision for Nougat and all that entails, but not much else in this case.

The users who are getting the update are reporting that there are no issues thus far. The update brings users up to Android version 7.0, rather than the newest 7.1.2. Even so, that brings a large number of benefits, such as improvements to Doze, better accessibility and security features, and native split screen multitasking. Reports thus far are saying that the Moto apps that are already present are staying in place with this update, but no new ones have been added, and there have been no major updates to them or problems with them after the update. Moto’s official changelog from their website the site echoes this. The changelog lists off all of the benefits of Android 7.0 Nougat over Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but doesn’t seem to mention any unique touches specific to the Moto X Pure.

This update, since it contains a full Android version update, is quite large, and should be applied with caution. The usual caveats apply; either have your phone on a charger or have the battery above 80%, and make sure not to power it off during the update. Since this update seems to be on a limited run, actually getting it to pop up as available on your device is the difficult part. Some users have suggested taking your SIM card out to check for the update over Wi-Fi. You could also try rebooting your device. It should go without saying, of course, that if you have your phone rooted or are on a custom ROM, the update notification and subsequent OTA will likely not appear at all.
