Chinese smartphone manufacturer, OnePlus, has collaborated with leading French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac to unveil a limited edition variant of its latest flagship phone, the OnePlus 5. The collaboration is part of the launch of ‘Callection’, an exclusive product line-up co-created with JCC. The Castelbajac OnePlus 5, the first look of which was revealed recently, was launched at a pop-up event in Paris on Friday along with another limited-edition variant, the OnePlus 5 JCC+.

The Paris pop-up event was organized in association with Paris-based fashion boutique Colette and held at its retail store in the city. The Castelbajac-themed OnePlus 5 handset will be available in the 8GB RAM and 128 GB storage variants. However, the sale of this limited edition smartphone will be limited to Europe, where it’ll be available October 2 onward for EUR 559 through The exclusive ‘Callection’ rolled out by OnePlus and JCC also includes t-shirts, holsters, caps, bags, in addition to the limited edition OnePlus 5 handsets bearing the Castelbajac’s signature in chromatic style.

Speaking of the unique partnership, OnePlus co-founder said that the collaboration was in line with the company’s efforts to offer its users something new and exciting, embodying the Never Settle spirit. Partnering with an iconic designer like Jean-Charles Castelbajac, who is known for setting the bar really high in the fashion circles with his game-changing ideas aptly reflects the company’s motto.

Castelbajac said that the collaboration was in keeping with his objective of always looking toward the future. “To change the world, you always need to be creative and work with people who are ahead of their time,” he was quoted as saying.

This isn’t the first time the Chinese phone maker has rolled out limited edition handsets to captivate the imagination of its customers. The limited edition of Colette-engraved OnePlus 3T, in the 128GB storage variant, was also introduced and made available through the boutique’s Paris store. Even though customers outside Europe won’t get their hands on the Castelbajac inspired smartphone, they can still buy the ‘Callection’ and ‘Never Settle’ t-shirts.

Apple’s iPhone 8 sees muted launch in Asia

SYDNEY/TOKYO (Reuters) – Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) launch of iPhone 8 kicked off in a less lively mood in Asia, versus previous debuts, as fans held out for the premium iPhone X due out in early November.

Hundreds of people usually gather at Apple’s Sydney city store with queues winding down the town’s main street, George Street, when there is a new product release. But there were fewer than 30 people lining up before the store opened on Friday, according to a Reuters witness.

While the number of people queuing up outside Apple stores have dropped over the years with many opting for online purchases, the weak turnout for the latest iPhone has partly been due to poor reviews.

Mazen Kourouche, who was first in queue after lining up 11 days outside the store so he could buy and review the product on YouTube, said there were modest refinements.

“(It) is pretty similar to the iPhone 7 but it shoots 4k 60 frames per second and it’s got a new glass back instead of the metal which is apparently more durable,” he told Reuters. “There aren’t too many new features to this one.”

In China, a loyal Apple customer said the improved camera was one of the reasons she purchased the new device.

“I waited until midnight to watch the launch event with my boyfriend to learn what’s new with this iPhone. Its photograph function is pretty good. So I think I must change with no hesitation,” said 29-year-old consumer Ta Na in Shanghai.

Mentions of iPhone 8 and iPhone X on popular Chinese social media platform Weibo, an indicator of consumer interest, were less than levels seen before the previous two launches.

Poor reviews of the iPhone 8, which comes 10 years after Apple released the first version of the revolutionary phone, drove down shares of the company to near two-month lows of $152.75 on Thursday, as investors worried pre-orders for the device had come in well below previous launches.

The iPhone 8 will only cater to those who want a new version but do not want to pay a hefty $999 for the iPhone X, said’s technology editor Alex Zaharov-Reutt, who did not line up for the launch.

The iPhone X is a glass and stainless steel device with an edge-to-edge display that Chief Executive Tim Cook has called “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone”.

“I think it’ll be more lively with more people with the iPhone X,” said Ray Yokoyama, after buying an iPhone 8 in Tokyo.

While the invitation doesn’t provide any information on what Motorola will launch or unveil, the picture on the invite is a pretty clear signal at the arrival of the Moto X4 in the country.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone, given the fact the company has recently started putting out teasers for the phone on its Twitter handle. Moto X4 will be launched in India on October 3, but we have yet to learn when exactly it will be available and how much it will cost. The smartphone was first announced last month at the annual IFA tradeshow in Berlin.

For those who’re interested, Moto X4 offers a 5.2-inch (1920 x 1080) display, a Snapdragon 630 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal memory, microSD card support, and a 3,000mAh battery inside. Like other Motorola smartphones, Moto X4 runs a pure version of Android Nougat. On the camera front, Moto X4 has a dual-camera setup, comprising of a 12MP and 8MP sensor. Also, add a 16MP shooter in the front of the phone for self portraits and video calling.

Moto X4 will have a lot to live up to, considering the competition is getting fierce in the premium mid-end segment. When launched in India, Moto X4 will be directly compared to the OnePlus 5, Vivo V7+, and Honor 8 Pro. The latter smartphone, especially, has been praised for its superior camera and overall performance.

Moto X4 launches in the pre-Diwali season when a lot of other players will also be offering their newer smartphones. We’ll have to see how the Moto X4 is priced in India. The Moto Z2 Play is currently the latest premium offering in India from the company at a price of Rs 27,999.

SpaceX forces Air Force to revise launch mindset

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The emergence of Elon Musk’s SpaceX as a legitimate and competitive player in the space-launch arena has prompted the U.S. Air Force to re-evaluate the way it perceives launch operations, said Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, commander, 45th Space Wing.

“SpaceX does not launch on schedule,” Monteith said Sept. 20 during a space warfighting panel at the annual Air Force Association Air Space Cyber Conference. “They launch on readiness.”

This launch-when-we’re-ready-to-go attitude has had an impact on SpaceX operational needs and costs, said Monteith, who also is director of the Air Force Eastern Range, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida.

“They have forced us — and I mean forced us — to get better, infinitely better, at what we do,” he said. “We are adopting commercial business practices and becom[ing] more efficient and more affordable.

“Working with them, we have been able to reduce our main launch footprint by 60 percent and reduce the cost of a single launch by over 50 percent,” he said. “Based on the autonomous flight safety system they developed with us they will help us get to 48 launches a year.”

The autonomous flight safety system replaces the ground-based mission flight control personnel and equipment with on-board positioning, navigation and timing sources and decision logic, the Air Force notes. The system is meant to reduce range spacelift cost, increase schedule predictability and availability, operational flexibility, and launch-slot flexibility.

SpaceX simply does things differently, he said. “And that’s good. We should not be the barrier between them and success.”

While SpaceX may be the commercial company having the biggest impact on how the Air Force approaches the way it does business, it is not the only company that is making the service look in the mirror.

“We are seeing other companies out there doing the same thing,” Col. Michael Hough, commander, 30th Space Wing and Western Range, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, said during the panel discussion.

“They are out in front of us and we’re catching up,” he said. “We’re listening to them.”

A commercial satellite has arrived in Cape Canaveral for the Space Coast’s next launch, planned in early October by a SpaceX rocket that will be lifting off for the second time.

Jointly owned by Luxembourg-based SES and Colorado-headquartered EchoStar Corp., the more than 11,000-pounds communications satellite was shipped from Toulouse, France, but manufacturer Airbus Defense and Space. 

The satellite known as EchoStar 105/SES-11 will provide digital television and broadband data services in North America, including the United States, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The mission will re-use a Falcon 9 rocket that launched a NASA supply mission to the International Space Station in February.

It will be the third time SpaceX has launched a previously flown — or what the company calls “flight proven” — booster, as it aims to make reusing rockets more routine.

SES was the customer for the first of those flights back in March, also used a rocket from a ISS resupply mission launched about a year earlier.

In June, a Falcon rocket that had launched commercial satellites in January lifted off again with a Bulgarian communications satellite. 

The upcoming launch from pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center is tentatively expected in the first week of October, but no date has been announced.

SpaceX separately is targeting an Oct. 4 launch of Iridium Communications satellites from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Vandenberg at 10:38 p.m. this Thursday (1:38 a.m. Friday Eastern time) will host United Launch Alliance’s attempt to deliver a classified U.S. intelligence mission to orbit on an Atlas V rocket.

ULA plans to follow that flight with another Atlas V launch of a National Reconnaissance Office mission from Cape Canaveral in October.
