iPhone X Latest News: Release Date, Price, New Features & Specs

Apple has unveiled the iPhone X, which joins the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in Apple’s all-new iPhone line-up. Here, we bring you everything you need to know about the iPhone X, including its release date, price, specs and features.

If you’re wondering why this iPhone is called the X, let us explain. The iPhone X is actually pronounced “iPhone ten” (with the X representing the Roman numeral for 10 in the same way that Mac OS X used to). That’s because 2017 is 10 years after the very first iPhone launched at Macworld Expo in 2007. So this is a sort of special, celebratory anniversary iPhone.

iPhone X release date

So when is the iPhone X coming out? The iPhone X will be arriving slightly later than the other new iPhones unveiled by Apple at the event. You’ll be able to pre-order the iPhone X from 27 October, before its official release on 3 November. You’ll be able to pre-order the iPhone X from Apple here, from retailers like Carphone Warehouse here, and from networks including EE here.

iPhone X ‘will meet Christmas demand’ after all

Following reports that suppliers would struggle to meet anticipated demand for the iPhone X ahead of the Christmas and January sales rush, it’s refreshing to hear from sources in the supply chain that things are looking up.

According to Digitimes, component yield rates are up, shipments have increased and holiday demand will be met… although it should be added that nobody really knows what demand will be like, given the unusual timing and release strategy this time around.

Reuters reported in October that in the US, the iPhone 7 is still outselling the newer iPhone 8. It cites people waiting for the iPhone X, and also the 7’s attractively lower price to the similar hardware of the iPhone 8.

We will have to wait to the new year to see if iPhone 8 sales are even more negatively affected by the introduction of the X.

iPhone X spotted in wild (with ‘exclusive’ dynamic wallpaper)

A short video has been posted to the Apple subreddit showing what is allegedly an iPhone X out in public. The phone is turned over a couple of times and appears to be operational, because you can see red ink blobs moving around on the screen in what is said to be a new dynamic wallpaper which will be exclusive to this device.

iPhone X retail box leaks online

The box that the iPhone X will be sold in has been spotted online, on Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program site. Unusually for an iPhone package, it shows the device screen-up, but this is understandable given how much focus is being placed on the handset’s upgraded (albeit notched) display.

iPhone X price

As expected, iPhone X is not cheap. It starts at £999 or $999, and that’s for the 64GB model. For the 256GB model, you’re looking at a whopping £1,149/$1,149. Wowzers.

That’s to buy the device outright, unlocked. But many people will buy it on contract instead. Sky Mobile, for instance, has released monthly pricing details for the iPhone X on its Swap12 and Swap24 plans:

  Swap24 Swap12
Upfront costs nothing £99
Monthly cost for your phone, data (500MB), calls and texts £42 £54
Monthly cost for your phone, data (1GB), calls and texts £47 £59
Monthly cost for your phone, data (5GB), calls and texts £52 £64
Monthly cost for your phone, data (10GB), calls and texts £57 £69

The names of those two plans refer to the number of months between phone handset upgrades. The company notes that “If Swap12 or Swap 24 customers choose not to upgrade their phone after one and two years respectively, their monthly cost drops for the rest of their contract.”

iPhone X design

iPhone X design

iPhone X design

Almost everything about the iPhone X’s design was leaked ahead of its launch, but while it’s not much of a surprise it’s still pretty awesome. It’s made with glass and stainless steel, and is available in Silver or Space Grey.

It’s water- and dust-resistant just like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were, too.

Edge-to-edge display

The iPhone X looks stunning, with an OLED display that stretches across the entire front of the phone for an edge-to-edge finish. Apple has called the display Super Retina, and it is 5.8in diagonally.

The screen has a million-to-one contrast ratio and wide colour support, and there’s also HDR that supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. It’s finally a display that’ll be able to compete with rivals from the likes of Samsung and LG. Expect to be blown away by it.

True Tone for the display itself means that it will adjust the white balance to match the surrounding light, too.

No more Home button

In order to make an edge-to-edge display, Apple has done away with the Home button on the iPhone X. iOS 11 has been redesigned to replace to Home button’s functions. You’ll now raise to wake the iPhone X, or tap the display. And to go back to the Home screen, you just swipe up from the bottom. Swiping up and pausing before letting go will open the multitasking screen, and pressing and holding the side button will launch Siri (as will saying Hey, Siri as usual).

Face ID

iPhone X Face ID

iPhone X Face ID

To unlock the iPhone X, you can use the new Face ID feature. We’re pretty concerned about how this is going to work in practice. Apple has promised that it’ll just work, but when Apple’s Craig Federighi tried it in the live demo he had to go to his backup iPhone X because the first one didn’t recognise his face properly. Whoops! The backup iPhone X worked brilliantly, though, and it sounds like Apple has used some serious tech to make sure that Face ID doesn’t recognise photos or masks.

Interestingly, Face ID means that there’s no Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple says that Face ID is much easier and safer, with a one in a million chance of someone being able to access your phone, rather than one in 50,000 for the Touch ID. Everything that Touch ID did is now done by Face ID, including Apple Pay and access to secure apps.

We’ve put together a simple comparison of the two biometric systems: Face ID vs Touch ID: What’s the best way to unlock an iPhone?

A fun touch are new Animoji, which let you make emoji come to life with your own expressions. You’ll then be able to send Animoji you create to your friends and family via iMessage.

The iPhone X is powered by an A11 Bionic chip. It has a six-core CPU design which Apple claims is the smartest and most powerful ever seen in a smartphone.

It works with the Apple-designed GPU, which has three cores and is capable of powering AR at 60fps, as well as enabling new machine learning and 3D games.

it’s set to be available with storage of 64GB or 256GB, but there’s no microSD card slot (as with all of Apple’s iPhones) so you’ll need to choose wisely when you buy.

iPhone X cameras

On the rear of the iPhone X is a dual-lens set-up, with both lenses 12Mp and both offer optical image stabilisation. One has an aperture of f/1.8, and the other f/2.4. It’s paired with a new quad LED True Tone Flash with Slow Sync, which is designed to offer a more natural light.

On the front of the phone is the 7Mp TrueDepth camera that Apple has developed for Face ID but will also help capture great selfies. The TrueDepth camera is made up of a dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator for advanced face mapping.

And you’ll now be able to use Portrait mode on both the front and rear cameras of the iPhone X. Previously limited to the iPhone 7 Plus (and now iPhone 8 Plus), and only the rear camera, Portrait mode will now be possible even when using the front-facing camera. There’s a new Portrait Lighting feature, too, that offers five different lighting styles to improve your portraits further.

Apple claims that the new camera in the iPhone X is capable of capturing the highest quality video ever from a smartphone. It has improved video stabilisation, offers 4K up to 60fps and there’s 1080p slo-mo up to 240fps.

We’re expecting some incredible photos and videos from this iPhone, that’s for sure.

The iPhone X’s cameras are also designed for AR, with new gyroscopes and accelerometers for motion tracking. This is made possible by the new A11 Bionic chip. This is the same chip you’ll find in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but the TrueDepth camera in the iPhone X will enable some additional AR features.

iPhone X battery life & wireless charging

iPhone X wireless charging

iPhone X wireless charging

All of this new tech had us worried about battery life, but Apple claims that it’s been improved. So much so that it should last two hours more than the iPhone 7, but we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on it for testing to see how long it lasts in practice.

A Chinese regulatory filing reveals that the iPhone X battery will have a capacity of 2,716mAh, later confirmed by a Chinese telecoms authority. This compares to 1,821mAh in the iPhone 8, and 2,675mAh in the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X can charge wirelessly, and Apple has made a new charging mat which has room for the Apple Watch Series 3 and your AirPods, too. Apple calls this charging mat AirPower, and it’ll be launching in 2018. If you don’t want Apple’s charging mat, others that work with Qi will be compatible with the iPhone X.

The iPhone X will run iOS 11, which is set to become available for other iPhones on 19 September. You can find out what new features iOS 11 will bring here.

Microsoft Says Its New Surface Book 2 is Twice as Powerful as Latest MacBook Pro

Microsoft today introduced the Surface Book 2, the second generation of its high-end notebook and tablet hybrid.

The new Surface Book 2 is equipped with Intel’s latest eighth-generation Core processors, up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 17 hours of battery life based on video playback.

Microsoft says those tech specs make the Surface Book 2 up to five times more powerful than the original Surface Book, and twice as powerful as the latest MacBook Pro, but it didn’t specify which configurations.

Microsoft’s comparisons to its primary competitor didn’t end there. On its website, it said the Surface Book 2 has 70 percent more battery life than the latest MacBook Pro, which lasts up to 10 hours on a single charge.

The new Surface Book 2 is available with a 13.5-inch or 15-inch display that can be detached from the keyboard and used as a tablet. The display can also be folded or reattached in Studio Mode or View Mode.

Microsoft added that the Surface Book 2 has 45 percent more pixels than the latest MacBook Pro. The 15-inch model has a resolution of 3240×2160 pixels, good for 267 PPI, while the 15-inch MacBook Pro is 2880×1800 and 220 PPI.

The notebook is equipped with two USB 3.1 ports, one USB-C port, a full-size SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has a proprietary SurfaceConnect port that allows a Surface Dock to be connected.

Surface Dock, available separately for $199, has two Mini DisplayPorts, one Gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 3.0 ports, and one audio out port.

As a Windows PC, the Surface Book 2 will be compatible with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update released today.

Surface Book 2 starts at $1,499 for the 13.5-inch model with a Core i5 processor, Intel HD Graphics 620, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage. More powerful 13.5-inch configurations are available for up to $2,999.

The 15-inch model starts at $2,499 with a Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage. More powerful 15-inch configurations are available for up to $3,299.

Surface Book 2 pre-orders begin November 9 on Microsoft’s website and at its retail stores in the United States and select other countries. Deliveries will begin when the device launches November 16.

OnePlus promised Oreo for the OnePlus 3/3T, and it delivered in the latest open beta

It has been a little over a month since the OnePlus 3 reportedly received Android Oreo through a closed beta program, but now the update is ready to be tested for the OnePlus 3 and 3T for those in the Open Beta program.

As a general overview, Android Oreo introduces visually-different Quick Settings and Settings areas, Picture in Picture mode, and auto-fill, along with many more features and enhancements. Make sure to check out our Android Oreo review to see what is new with the update, and while things might not look very different when compared to Nougat, there are more than enough tweaks and changes that help move the needle.

Going back to the OnePlus 3 and 3T’s Open Beta program, Android Oreo is available for both devices as a 1.4 GB download at the links below. You will need to flash the update, though the instructions to do so are very straightforward.

Because this is the Open Beta program, there are several known issues that will presumably be ironed out by the time the final version lands. For example, unlocking the phones with your fingerprint might be slower than usual, the shortcut to access Google Photos is unavailable, NFC and Bluetooth are somewhat unstable, and the performance and compatibility of third-party apps are not up to snuff.

As exciting as the news might be, it arrives with a somewhat somber context. Keep in mind that, according to OnePlus, Android Oreo will be the last major Android update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. Likely because of that, the Open Beta program for the two phones will end after Android Oreo exits beta and makes its way to more users.

Security patches will be released “for the foreseeable future,” but with today’s news, we’re that much closer to the end of the road for the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

Destiny 2 UPDATE – Trials of the Nine countdown, Iron Banner latest, first secret quest | Gaming | Entertainment

Destiny 2 players are getting ready for the latest Trials of the Nine refresh after Iron Banner launched on PS4 and Xbox One this week.

However, the mode and map for Trials of the Nine remains a mystery as Bungie have not released a Destiny 2 schedule for October.

The Destiny 2 developer had previously released a roadmap for the online shooter, but that only covered month one.

So, anything past week four in Destiny 2 is a mystery for players, with a number of big additions on the horizon.

There is plenty of speculation among Guardians about what’s next in store for them – with talk of the first secret quest taking place soon.

Express.co.uk has rounded up all we know so far about what’s happening with Destiny 2 this week and the October schedule.

WHEN IS DESTINY 2 TRIALS OF THE NINE GETTING A REFRESH?

On Friday Destiny 2 Trials of the Nine will get updated, with a new mode and map.

Replacing the Trials of Osiris end-game event, Trials of the Nine is the go-to Destiny 2 game mode for fans of PvP Crucible action.

Trials of the Nine gets updated in Destiny 2 every week at 10am PT / 6pm BST on Friday.

DESTINY 2 WEEK 6 – TRIALS OF THE NINE MODE AND MAP

For the first four weeks of Destiny 2, we knew exactly what map and mode we’d be playing thanks to the Destiny 2 Month One roadmap.

However, everything past that is now a mystery.

Last week the mode and map in Destiny 2 Trials of the Nine was as follows:

Mode: Survival

Map: European Dead Zone Map, The Dead Cliffs

Seeing as last week was Survival, this week it could switch back to Countdown.

One map that we could see a return of is Altar of Flame.

In week three of Destiny 2 Altar of Flame was meant to be the map for Trials of the Nine.

However, this was swapped out after around two hours due to an exploit.

If you go back to week three though, you may get an idea of what we could be playing tomorrow.

It was changed to Countdown on Eternity.

So it’s possible Altar of Flame may make a return, with the exploit that players were taking an advantage of hopefully now fixed.

DESTINY 2 – TRIALS OF THE NINE REQUIREMENTS

If you want to take part in Trials of the Nine, there are a number of requirements you have to fulfil.

These are as follows:

• Players must complete the Destiny 2 campaign

• Players must complete the the Call to Arms Milestone at least once

• Players must have 260 Power

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN DESTINY 2? WHAT IS IN THE OCTOBER SCHEDULE?

Friday, as per usual, will also see Xur return with a selection of exotics.

However, anything else happening on Friday – or this week in general – remains a mystery.

It’s rumoured that Destiny 2 fans could see the first secret quest revealed this month.

Fans believe the secret area during the 1AU mission in the main campaign will unlock for the special quest soon.

It had been expected that the secret room could have unlocked on October 7, as the seventh is a date that has long been favoured by Bungie.

However, that came and past with no reveal – so there is still hope the secret quest may become available this week.

DESTINY 2 IRON BANNER LATEST

Iron Banner launched in Destiny 2 on Tuesday, and fans have already discovered a great Easter Egg.

Destiny 2 players have uncovered an Overwatch secret hidden within the Iron Banner event.

Accessible only by the best players, Lord Saladin references Overwatch character Reaper when players manage a 20-person kill streak.

SpaceX’s Latest Falcon 9 Rocket Landing is Key Step to Going to Mars

Damn, Space X. Back at it again with the refurbished rocket launches.

On Wednesday evening, SpaceX pulled off its 18th successful landing in a row. This is the company’s second mission in three days, as well as the third time SpaceX has successfully reused a rocket used in a previous launch. Both are key steps forward in SpaceX’s push toward truly reusable rockets — and, by extension, Elon Musk’s plans to take humans to Mars.

After the Falcon 9 rocket deployed a communications satellite into geostationary orbit, its previously-flown booster successfully landed on the company’s Of course I Still Love You drone ship in the Atlantic off of Cape Canaveral, Florida. Because SpaceX timed the launch within five minutes of the sunset, video footage of the company’s latest success was particularly breathtaking.

The moments following the Falcon 9’s successful launch,

For SpaceX missions, executing a safe landing in which the rocket comes home intact is hugely important. That’s because reusability is one of the key areas in which company founder and CEO Elon Musk aims to stake the company’s reputation. Being able to make frequent flights is also critical to get lots of humans and supplies into Earth orbit as part of its future plan to settle Mars.

The evening launch is the third time the company has reused a booster from a previous launch. The specific booster used in this launch was first deployed back in February to get a massive payload of food and exercise equipment to the ISS. The eight-month turnaround between launches is the fastest of any of the booster reuses so far, though Musk has said his ultimate goal is to get a rocket back on the pad within 24 hours of use.

The first stage of the Falcon 9 following a successful landing.

“SpaceX believes rocket reusability is the key breakthrough needed to reduce the cost of access to space and enable people to live on other planets,” the company’s website reads.

Musk also wants to achieve reusability of the second stage of the rocket, though so far the company has not attempted to recover one. In March, he tweeted the company might attempt to recover the second stage during its inaugural Falcon Heavy launch, though when that will even happen remains uncertain.

Not only does Musk want to make sure his company’s landings are successful, he also wants to prove that he can execute them at a rapid pace. That’s why he scheduled this mission — originally slated for October 7 — so close to the one that occurred on Monday. Similary, the company pulled off two launches in three days as part of a double header back in June.

In addition to helping Space X achieve these milestones, this mission served as a means of getting a satellite from the companies EchoStar and SES satellites into orbit. The payload is the commercial telecommunications satellite Echo Star 105/SES-11, and it will be used for providing U.S. states and parts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean with HD television.

Pokemon Go NEWS – Halloween event latest, Legendary Raid denial, Gen 3 update | Gaming | Entertainment

Pokemon Go developer Niantic is expected to reveal more about the Halloween 2017 event soon.

A recent Pokemon Company statement suggested that spooky new gen 3 Pokemon would join the app at Halloween.

“The Halloween season is a special time in Pokemon Go,” the post reads.

“Plenty of good stuff is coming to the game later this October, and we can’t wait to get out and about to see what sort of excitement we can scare up while catching new Pokemon to fill out our Pokedex.”

As previously reported, Gen 3 source code was recently discovered by Pokemon Go dataminers, which must surely mean that new Pokemon are on their way.

Gen 3 Ghost Types include Shuppet, Banette, Mega Banette, Duskull and Dusclops, which is a nice selection for a limited time event.

You can see the best Gen 1, 2 and 3 Ghost Pokemon in the gallery below…

Pokemon Go developer Niantic is unlikely to add Oh-Ho to the game anytime soon.

A leaked Niantic email supposedly confirmed plans to add Oh-Ho to the game as part of an imminent Legendary Raid.

Unfortunately, the email wasn’t actually sent out by Niantic, so you’ll have to wait a little longer for Oh-Ho Raids.

That’s according to a Niantic employee, who told Reddit users: “I reviewed our support ticketing system and I can confirm that our support team did not send this erroneous message.”

It’s been speculated that a new Legendary Raid will launch alongside Gen 3 Pokemon and the upcoming Halloween event.

Pokemon Go fans have uncovered new secrets in the latest update for the game on Android and iPhone.

Having already discovered Gen 3 Pokemon in the game files, fans have found more evidence that suggests that Niantic is planning to introduce new Monsters soon.

The latest Pokemon Go news has come directly from the new update released by Niantic, which has now been datamined by players.

Reports from leading dataminers have confirmed that nearly everything is in place to launch a big Pokemon Go Gen 3 update in the near future.

The Pokemon Go files now include all the forms needed for Gen 3, a big move forward for those hoping for some kind of launch around the upcoming Halloween event.

The only thing missing appears to be sound files for the Gen 3, which will be needed to replicate their in-game cries.

Beta is a measure of the threat arising from exposure to normal market movements as opposed to idiosyncratic components. The market portfolio of all investable belongings has a beta of exactly 1. A beta down below 1 can suggest possibly an expenditure with reduce volatility than the market, or a volatile expenditure whose price tag movements are not really correlated with the market. An case in point of the to start with is a treasury invoice: the price tag does not go up or down a great deal, so it has a minimal beta. An case in point of the second is gold. The price tag of gold does go up and down a great deal, but not in the very same direction or at the very same time as the market.

A beta increased than just one normally indicates that the asset both equally is volatile and tends to move up and down with the market. An case in point is a inventory in a significant technological know-how business. Detrimental betas are possible for investments that have a tendency to go down when the market goes up, and vice versa. There are couple fundamental investments with comprising and noteworthy negative betas, but some derivatives like put possibilities can have big negative betas.

Why Traders ought to have a appear on beta and why it is important

Beta is important simply because it measures the threat of an expenditure that simply cannot be reduced by diversification. It does not measure the threat of an expenditure held on a stand-alone basis, but the amount of threat the expenditure provides to an currently-diversified portfolio. In the money asset pricing product, beta threat is the only sort of threat for which buyers ought to acquire an predictable return increased than the threat-no cost charge of interest.

Why increased-beta is riskier than reduce- beta

Larger-beta stocks have a tendency to be a lot more volatile and therefore riskier, but present the probable for increased returns. Reduced-beta stocks pose fewer threat but normally offer you reduce returns. Some have challenged this concept, declaring that the information exhibit little relation amongst beta and probable reward, or even that reduce-beta stocks are both equally fewer dangerous and a lot more successful (contradicting CAPM). In the very same way a stock’s beta demonstrates its relation to market shifts, it is also an indicator for required returns on expenditure (ROI).

Now have a look on Beta of these three stocks

Beta values for the previously mentioned stocks are 1.48, 2.34, 1.41.

Latest AirBeamTV app lets you mirror your iPhone directly to a Samsung television

AirBeamTV last year created a Mac app that let you use AirPlay mirroring to a Samsung Smart TV without an Apple TV, and it’s now done the same for the iPhone and iPad.

Mirror for Samsung TV app for iPhone and iPad is a unique application which mirrors the screen and audio of your iPhone or iPad to any Samsung Smart TV. No additional hardware needed and you can mirror any app on your iPhone or iPad to your Samsung TV …

NordVPN

Usually, AirPlay from an iPhone to a TV would require an Apple TV attached. The company says that the app has been made possible by use of ReplayKit in iOS 11.

“At WWDC 2017, Apple announced that they have extended the functionality of the ReplayKit framework”, explains Demid Borodin, co-founder and Director of Video Technology. “This extended functionality opened the door for us to bring our popular Mirror for Samsung TV app also to iOS. Before iOS 11, we only supported macOS, now everybody with a modern iPhone and iPad can directly mirror to his Samsung TV.”

The company says that the processing power required means that you’ll need a reasonably beefy iPhone or iPad.

Mirror for Samsung TV runs only on newer iPhones (from iPhone 6S onwards), any iPad Pro and recent iPads (from the 5th generation onwards) which run iOS 11.

It does, however, work with older televisions – it’s compatible with any Samsung Smart TV from 2012 on.

There are a few things to note. First, there is between one and three seconds of latency, so it’s obviously not suitable for gaming. Second, it won’t work for DRM-enabled apps, like Netflix. Finally, you don’t get any audio when mirroring from Safari.

Put the last couple of issues together, and you’re probably not going to be using it to watch movies, which is a shame, but you can view your own photos and video, as well as use it for most other apps.

Mirror for Samsung TV is a $4.99 download from the App Store. The Mac version is a $9.99 download from the Mac App Store.

Will Ambarella’s Latest Chip Be Enough? — The Motley Fool

Ambarella (NASDAQ:AMBA) is desperately hunting for new growth avenues as its prospects in the drone and the action camera market appear to be diminishing. Customers such as GoPro and DJI are reducing their reliance on the chipmaker, so the vision specialist has found growth difficult to come by in recent quarters.

Looking ahead, Ambarella’s decline looks to continue as the company’s tepid third-quarter guidance indicates that the revenue will shrink on a year-over-year basis. Ambarella bulls believe that the company’s upcoming chip platform could become the basis of a turnaround as it addresses a fast-growing opportunity. But is this going to be the case? Let’s take a look.

The computer vision chip market

Ambarella has drummed up a lot of hype around its upcoming computer vision chip — dubbed CV1 — which has been under development for four years. The company received the first samples of the CV1 chip in May, and since then, it has successfully tested the software elements of the chip.

Ambarella now plans to showcase the working capability of this chip at the Consumer Electronics Show in January next year. But before that, it will start sampling the new platform to its customers during the fourth quarter. Now, this new chip seems to have turned up the excitement of investors and Wall Street analysts alike.

Morgan Stanley, for instance, believes that the CV1 platform could help Ambarella make a bigger dent in the security camera and drone market. The firm also believes that CV1 will help the chipmaker take advantage of the proliferation of advance driver assistance systems (ADAS) in vehicles. One estimate puts the computer vision hardware and software market — with automotive, consumer devices, and robotics being the biggest application areas — at $48.6 billion by 2022. But investors shouldn’t forget that Ambarella isn’t the only one training its sights at this potentially fertile ground.

Beware the competition

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) are competitors to watch. Intel, for instance, has brought together multiple companies to make sense of all the data captured by computer vision chips, driven by its acquisition of vision specialist Mobileye earlier this year.

Mobileye’s vision technology forms the basis of ADAS, which is critical to enabling autonomous driving. Its EyeQ family of chips can process the huge amount of data required to support various ADAS functions based on just one camera sensor. As it stands, Mobileye enjoys a huge lead over Ambarella here as its first generation of EyeQ chips hit the market back in 2004.

The company is now developing the fifth generation of these chips with an aim to enable full autonomy in vehicles by 2020. Mobileye has worked all these years to make several camera sensors work in tandem with all the accompanying hardware such as sensors, LiDARs, and radars.

In fact, the company has already demonstrated that its test vehicle can drive from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv and back based on inputs from camera sensors alone.

What’s more, Mobileye is in a stronger position to eat into the ADAS market as part of Intel as the chip giant has strung together an enviable alliance of players in the autos space.

The CV1 chip might not help Ambarella make a comeback in the drone market, either. It will run into stiff competition from Qualcomm in this market, as the chipmaker’s Snapdragon Flight Drone Platform can help drones navigate in indoor environments without the need for a global positioning system (GPS).

Qualcomm’s platform allows drones to identify objects and quickly make decisions through autonomous onboard computing on the drone itself. Furthermore, commercial drone makers are already using Qualcomm’s technology. The GDU O2 drone, launched in September, is equipped with Qualcomm’s visual positioning system, making it fit for indoor operation.

Again, Ambarella investors should note that Qualcomm offers a suite of hardware and software tools that combines navigation, communication, and photography technologies on a single integrated circuit. This helps Qualcomm reduce the weight, size, and power consumption of the drone, which results in a longer flight time.

Therefore, Qualcomm helps developers and drone makers reduce their costs and time to market with its platform given the complete package it offers.

As a result, the success of Ambarella’s yet-to-be-launched CV1 computer vision chip isn’t a given. Its rivals have made rapid progress in computer vision technology and are offering commercial products already, which might leave very little for Ambarella to hunt for in this multibillion-dollar space.
