Destiny 2 Legendary Shards Guide – How to Earn Legendary Shards, How to Infuse Weapons and Armor

The currency of Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 isn’t all that easy to come by, and you’ll have to be prepared to sacrifice some pretty nice Legendary weapons or armor pieces if you want to have enough Legendary Shards to trade with Xur when he arrives. In this Destiny 2 Legendary Shards guide, we’ll be outlining all the best ways to assemble a number of Legendary Shards as quickly as possible, as well as explaining their various uses within the game.

Destiny 2 Legendary Shards Guide

Firstly, Legendary Shards can not only be used as a currency for Xur, Destiny’s mysterious vendor that deals exclusively in Exotic items, but they can also be used to infuse weapons and armor, raising the overall level of your gear.

Hard Light, one of the best Exotic weapons in Destiny 2.

But, before you can put any Legendary Shards to use, you’ll have to earn them. These elusive items can be obtained from either decrypting Faction gear (Crucible, European Dead Zone, Arcology, etc.), or by dismantling both Legendary and Exotic weapons and armor.

In order to get your hands on Legendary and Exotic weapons and armor items, you’ll first need to hit the overall level cap of 20, which can be achieved by simply completing the campaign of Destiny 2. After this, you’ll need to complete endgame activities like Strikes, Crucible matches, Nightfall Strikes, and Raids, in order to earn Legendary (and sometimes Exotic) gear.

Simply head into your inventory once you’ve got this gear, and hold X/Square to dismantle the gear. You’ll earn 3 Legendary Shards for every Legendary and Exotic weapon and armor piece you dismantle.

Destiny 2 How to Infuse Gear Guide

Simply put, if you have lower level Exotic or Legendary gear lying around, you can infuse it with a more powerful item, in order to raise the overall level of the former item. It’s a great way to power up some of your favorite gear, that you might have to leave behind in your Vault due to the lower level of the item.

When you’re in your character menu, hover over an item you wish to upgrade, and press Y/Triangle. This will bring up the details of the item, and under the ‘mods’ header, the first option will be ‘infuse’.

Hover over the infuse option, and you’ll be presented with a list of any items that you can infuse with this one, in order to boost the overall rating of the item you selected in the character menu.

Infusing an item costs 4 Legendary Shards, and we’d only recommend dismantling items that you no longer use for infusion, since you don’t really want to be giving up your most powerful weapons and armor items.

If you want to see a comprehensive list of the all the most powerful, Exotic weapons and armor pieces that Destiny 2 has to offer you, then head on over to our Destiny 2 Exotic gear guide, where you can find all the items in the game that will undoubtedly enhance your Power level. Destiny 2 guide: How to infuse armor and weapons

Infusing gear in Destiny 2 is a way to keep low-power Legendary or Exotic gear viable by increasing its Power level. If you’re not familiar with upgrading gear from the first Destiny, this can be (more than) a little confusing, but we’re going to show you how to do it and why you want to infuse your weapons and armor.

What does Infusing gear do?

The short answer is this: Infusing gear makes Legendary or Exotic gear better by feeding it better, less rare gear.

Let’s say you got some really cool chest armor early in the game (like what we have in the image above). Since the gear you get roughly corresponds to your power level at the time you got it, this gear only has a defense of 56. Much later in the game, when your Power level is much higher, that 56 defense armor is laughably weak. But it’s Exotic and has extra perks and buffs. And it looks cool. What is a Guardian to do?

That’s where Infusing comes in. With a few Legendary Shards and some Glimmer, you can feed some higher defense chest armor to your 56 defense Exotic, to turn it into something on par with your current power level.

How to Infuse gear

From your Character menu, pick a piece of Legendary or Exotic gear and open up the details. Under the armor/weapon mods heading, the first option will be Infuse. When you hover over that option, you’ll see the available gear you can Infuse into your choice, as well as the cost in Glimmer and Legendary Shards.

What are Legendary Shards and how do I get them?

Legendary Shards are a consumable material you’ll get when you dismantle Legendary or Exotic items. There’s no other way to get them. (They’re also one of the currencies you’ll use with Xur.) They’re similar to the Gunsmith Materials you get from dismantling Rare or better gear.

When to infuse weapons and armor (and what to keep)

Since Infusing Legendary or Exotic items requires Legendary Shards, and you can only get Legendary Shards by dismantling Legendary or Exotic gear, this is best saved for later in the game. At that point, you’re already high in Power and you’re getting Legendary (or better) drops more often. Hold onto any Legendary and Exotic items, but save all the dismantling and infusing for later on, when things aren’t churning quite so much.
