Russians ‘used Pokemon Go to sow division’ in run-up to US presidential election

A Russian-linked account reportedly used the popular video game Pokemon Go to draw attention to alleged police brutality in the United States.

A report by CNN adds another detail to the emerging portrait of Russian efforts to shape public opinion and foment discord in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

After American intelligence agencies concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin had launched a wide-ranging campaign to “undermine public faith in the US democratic process”, Facebook revealed that Russian entities had purchased thousands of advertisements intended to widen divisions around contentious issues like race and gun rights.

Among the topics reportedly addressed was the Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks to draw attention to African-Americans dying at the hands of police officers. According to CNN, one of the artificial accounts Facebook has taken down was entitled “Don’t Shoot Us” and was used to disseminate information about incidents of police brutality.

The effort reportedly enlisted Pokemon Go, a game in which players use their smartphones to “catch” digital creatures superimposed on the real world. CNN found that Don’t Shoot Us encouraged users to play near sites of reported police violence and to name their Pokemon “with a US police brutality victim’s name”.

Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go, said in a statement that “our game assets were appropriated and misused in promotions by third parties without our permission“ and that ”our platform was in no way being used“ because players can’t use the app to share information with other players.

Facebook did not respond to a request to confirm that Don’t Shoot Us was among the suspended accounts.

Congressional investigators are keenly focused on the role social media platforms may have played in helping to disseminate Russian-generated content. Representatives from Facebook, Google and Twitter have been invited to testify on the matter in an upcoming open hearing.

In an interview on Thursday with Axios, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said Congress should publicly release the Russian-linked ads the social media giant has turned over.

“Things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened, especially troubling foreign interference in a democratic election,” Ms Sandberg said.

The Division 1.7: Release date set for PS4, Xbox One and PC update | Gaming | Entertainment

The development team have now laid out their plans on when they hope to deploy the latest update for the Tom Clancy shooter.

The Division 1.7 release date will be announced this week, with Ubisoft confirming that they hope to have it primed for mid-August.

This will likely be announced during one of the scheduled live streams that will be hosted on Twitch later this week.

One of the big additions coming with The Division 1.7 will be the launch of the first outbreak event, which comes with its own rewards.

A message from Ubisoft explains: “The first Global Event, Outbreak, will be available when Update 1.7 is live, plus or minus an hour or two.

“The available Classified sets from this event are Deadeye, Final Measure, and Lone Star.

“Based on player feedback, Outbreak’s Contamination has been tuned down as well. Don’t forget the NinjaBike Backpack is in the general loot pool for 1.7.”

Outbreak adds extra headshot damage and a toxic effect to Cleaner attacks, with the idea that all enemy factions are afflicted with a disease.

This is currently live on the PC PTS, while a number of other changes have also been worked on.

“Classified caches earned from Global Events have been improved to drop two items every time,” Ubisoft reveal.

“The drop rates are as follows: a 45% chance for a Classified gear item, a 43.5% chance for a normal gear set item, and an 11.5% chance for an Exotic.

“There is also a 12.5% chance to earn an additional third item, with a 90% chance it’ll be a Classified item and a 10% chance it’ll be Exotic.

“The previous SASG shotgun changes from PTS3 will make it into 1.7, but no more changes are scheduled at the moment.

“We are still monitoring shotguns with Cronusmax in mind, and we want to remind players that we acknowledge this as one of the current issues.

“We are doing in-depth investigations to identify causes of in-game lag. We are hoping to address specific examples on next week’s State of the Game after more investigation, so keep the feedback rolling.”

Expect more news on the official Division update launch to be confirmed later this week, with Thursday, August 10 a possible date for new information to be shared.

Facebook’s secretive hardware division is exploring modular smartphones

Facebook’s Building 8, the secretive skunkworks division led by former DARPA director Regina Dugan, is looking into developing modular smartphones, according to a report from Business Insider.

The company filed for a patent, published today, that details a “modular electromagnetic device” that would alleviate the issue of “expensive and wasteful” conventional electronics that consumers purchase and then dispose of when they’re inevitably outdated in a couple of years. The patent describes both a phone and a smart speaker as potential product categories.

It’s unclear to what extent Facebook is working on a concrete hardware project that will see the light of day, but there are a number of signs that point to Building 8’s increasing interest in modular devices. For one, Dugan, as the head of Building 8, has a history with modular smartphones: she was previously in charge of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects, which developed a modular phone called Project Ara. That product got all the way to a pilot test of the hardware in Puerto Rico before Google shuttered the project last fall.

Earlier in the year, Dugan joined Facebook to lead Building 8, where she’s pursuing a number of other ambitious hardware concepts. Those far-off ideas even include brain-computer interfaces that allow people to type with their thoughts and even hear through their skin. The division’s head of new product introduction, Bernard Richardson, is also formerly of Amazon’s Echo speaker, giving Building 8 some high-profile consumer hardware expertise.

Business Insider reports that a number of former Project Ara team members now work for Building 8 at Facebook. The company also confirmed to BI that the technology described in the patent was developed primarily by former members of the startup Nascent Objects, a company focusing on modular electronics that Facebook acquired last September.

Intel eliminates wearables division

Intel has axed the division that worked on health wearables, including fitness trackers, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The company has been slowly de-emphasizing its own line of wearables for the past several years, and has not mentioned wearables on its earnings calls since 2014.

In November, TechCrunch reported that the company was planning to take a step back from the business after its acquisition of the Basis fitness watch didn’t pan out as expected. Intel denied at the time that it was stepping back.

But a source told CNBC that the chip maker in fact let go about 80 percent of the Basis group in November. Many of the people were given the opportunity to relocate to other parts of the business.

About two weeks ago, Intel completely eliminated the group, this person said. The company’s New Technologies Group, which looks at cutting-edge business areas, is now focusing on augmented reality, another source told CNBC.

Intel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Intel once hoped that it would rule the wearables category alongside such players as Apple and Fitbit. Back in 2014, the company partnered with celebrities like 50 cent to show off its heart-rate sensing earbuds. Also in that year, it shelled out roughly $100 million for Basis.

“I want to be able to leave my phone at home,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich told reporters in January 2014 during a keynote the Consumer Electronics Show. “We will get there.”

On its web site, Intel continues to advertise its Curie chipset for connected Internet of Things devices, including wearables, alongside partnerships with watch makers like Tag Heuer.

Intel is scheduled to report Q2 earnings after the bell on Thursday, July 27.

Here’s a video from back when Intel was talking up its wearables strategy in 2014:

Nokia nabs Samsung North America CEO to lead its consumer-focused Technologies division | VentureBeat | Business

Nokia has finally filled the vacant role of president of its Nokia Technologies division, nine months after Ramzi Haidamus stepped down.

The Finnish tech company has appointed Gregory Lee, who had been in various roles at Samsung since 2004 but served as CEO and president for the company’s North America division since 2014.

Haidamus joined Nokia Technologies back in 2014 but left the position last September when he was temporarily replaced by Brad Rodrigues, head of strategy and business development at Nokia Technologies, until they found a permanent replacement.

Once a major brand in the consumer realm, Nokia has shifted focus since it sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft back in 2014. It has doubled down on efforts with its network infrastructure business, Nokia Networks, while Nokia Technologies has played something of a bit part in keeping the brand alive in the public sphere. A number of products now emanate from Nokia Technologies, including its virtual reality (VR) Ozo camera and various products courtesy of digital health-tracking company Withings, which Nokia acquired for $192 million last year — though the Withings brand name is no more.

Nokia has also been edging back into the mobile phone fray, with a number of Nokia-branded devices slowly seeping into the market. Indeed, the company recently established a new business vehicle called HMD Global to design and develop new phones and tablets through a licensing arrangement. A number of Nokia devices have already launched around the world, including a feature phone, while at Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year, HMD Global revealed that three new Android smartphones were on the way. Nokia’s reentry to the U.S. smartphone market was confirmed earlier this week, with news that the mid-range Nokia 6 was set to launch for $229 through Amazon in early July.

It has hitherto been unclear how serious Nokia’s mobile phone aspirations for North America were, and the appointment of Lee brings just a little more clarity to the situation. As CEO, Lee has spearheaded Samsung’s various consumer businesses for North America, including mobile phones, however he has also been responsible for the company’s broader consumer electronics business in areas such as digital health and VR. This would seem to make him a great fit for Nokia Technologies, given its three current market segments: digital health, digital media (VR camera), and phones.

But the extent to which Lee is charged with bringing Nokia-branded devices to the North American market isn’t clear, especially since it’s technically HMD Global — a separate, independent business — that’s responsible for that segment.

“We have chosen the right leader to take Nokia Technologies forward at a time of renewed excitement about the Nokia brand around the world,” said Rajeev Suri, CEO and president of Nokia and chairman of Nokia Technologies, in a press release. “Gregory’s passion for innovation and operational excellence, along with his proven ability to build and lead global consumer technology businesses, make him well suited to advance Nokia’s efforts in virtual reality, digital health, and beyond.”

Lee will be based in California, where he will report directly to Suri.

Sledgehammer Games have disclosed new modifications to the Multiplayer gameplay for the “Connect with of Obligation” sequence, as the make-a-class method of earlier titles is changed by a new Divisions profession development in the approaching “Connect with of Obligation: WWII.”

Fb/CallOfDutyA promotional impression for “Connect with of Obligation: WWII” as featured in the series’ official Fb website page.

Alternatively of the multitude of decisions that arrive with the outdated development method, the new Divisions profession streamlines the character-constructing facet of the multiplayer gameplay for “Connect with of Obligation: WWII.”

Michael Condrey not long ago spoke with the PlayStation Blog about the modifications coming up for the multiplayer profession development facet of “Connect with of Obligation: WWII.” Condrey describes how Sledgehammer is doing absent with the classic ability purchasing method. “Changing the make-a-class method, gamers select from five iconic Entire world War II divisions just about every with precise standard battle instruction, division instruction and weapon expertise,” Condrey explained.

“We imagine it’s going to intrigue Connect with of Obligation sequence veterans, and we can’t wait for our fans to see it for themselves,” Condrey noted, as quoted by the Intercontinental Small business Occasions.

This means that characters will arrive as offers of expertise and loadouts, relying on their Division. The Airborne Division is framed as a class for those who want emphasis on velocity, maneuvering and stealth. The Mountain Division is related, but extra centered on positioning and lengthy-selection sharpshooting.

The Infantry Division represents a extra upfront style of gameplay, with Infantry fighters at their very best in the middle of frontline struggle. The Armored Division, in the meantime, is explained as “Bringing the heaviest firepower” between the troopers of “Connect with of Obligation: WWII.”

The Expeditionary Pressure looks to be a adaptable unit that is developed all around specialised explosives, rocket launchers and even a flamethrower, as explained by Comic E-book.

Activision has introduced that “Connect with of Obligation: WWII” will start on Nov. 3 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox A single and Pc. The sport publisher, alongside one another with sport developer Sledgehammer, could give out a handful of extra specifics about the sport in their panel at the approaching Digital Enjoyment Expo (E3) 2017.
