Motorola Officially Announces Android 8.0 Oreo Update for Their Devices

Motorola has been quite of a mixed bag when it comes to updates. Just like last year, there are some odd omissions. For example, we are quite surprised to see that the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, Motorola’s budget offerings from last year, are not getting the Android Oreo update, especially after Motorola’s marketing material for both phones very explicitly said that the phones “will get upgraded to Android operating system versions N and O”. This is another case of phone manufacturers failing to deliver on their promises and Motorola has already done this, so it’s a huge letdown for those who bought the Moto G4 based on Moto’s update support. Earlier this year OnePlus did something similar, by cancelling the Android Nougat update for the OnePlus 2 and leaving it on Marshmallow after previously confirming that the phone was indeed getting it.

This isn’t unheard of Motorola. Last year, both the Moto G 2015 and the Moto E 2015 were prematurely dropped after Motorola confirmed the phones were not getting Android Nougat. And even then, the Moto E 2015 only received the Marshmallow update in select markets, notably excluding the US, effectively leaving the phone with only one minor update (Android 5.0.2 to Android 5.1). Some other 2016 and 2017 phones, like the Moto E3 and Moto E4 ranges, as well as the whole Moto C line (launched earlier this year), were also excluded from the Oreo roll out, leaving them with no update support whatsoever.

We are still not sure whether the rollout itself will be timely, but based on previous rollouts, we can expect the Moto Z2 and Moto X4 to get it around November-December, followed by the Moto G5 and G5S phones around January-February 2018. The last ones would be the Moto Z (first gen) line, which should roll out around May 2018 for the unlocked models and extend up to July-August 2018 for the Droid editions. This is just pure guessing based on previous rollouts, so don’t take those predictions as fact.

If your device is not getting the update, then you can break away from Motorola and install it unofficially as soon as it becomes stable, as most Moto phones actually have an outstanding developer community (despite their unwillingness to release sources in a timely manner). But it should be completely clear by now that you should avoid Motorola and Lenovo if you actually care about updates — or, at the very least, that you should not trust their word.

Motorola Kernel Sources Appear to Differ from Binaries on Live Devices

Android’s foundations are born in open source as it was released as an open source operating system and has grown to be the most used operating system in the world. Without licenses like the General Public License (GPL), open source could not have been enforced in the way that it was. XDA itself has grown from the open source community, with a thriving community built around the Android Open Source Project and the hundreds of devices that run Android.

The GPL has protected so much of the growing Android community over the years. It allows developers from anywhere in the world to take a device and use the kernel source code to make something great out of it. It’s a recipe for brilliance in some cases, with some amazing feats of intuition and development shown daily by our amazing developer community. To build an AOSP-based ROM for any device, for instance, it’s imperative that we have access to the kernel source code to ensure that the ROM can boot properly.

With that, I’m sure it’s understandable why we dislike when companies don’t abide by the GPL. It’s attacking the very ground from which Android grew, and in turn, our great developer community surrounding the platform. Open source is pretty great, the GPL is pretty great and breaking the GPL (which now seen as violating a legally binding contract) is pretty bad. That hasn’t stopped companies like OnePlus, IUNI, Huawei and even Samsung in the past from not abiding by the GPL, however. And now, we’re hearing from our developer community that Motorola is (again) skirting with their obligations under the GPL.


Motorola Violating the GPL with Incomplete or Late Kernel Source Releases

Motorola has violated the GPL in the past with delayed kernel source release, but the situation now seems to be even worse. XDA Recognized Developer Somcom3X has pointed out that they are violating it again, but not only are kernel sources not being released for a multitude of devices, but for those devices which they have released sources, there are some incomplete parts to it. For instance, the kernel source for the Moto Z apparently has missing camera drivers, according to the developer.

Motorola’s GitHub page has been flooded with requests for the Moto Z kernel sources, and it was always only “a few days” away. But it took 8 months for the kernel source to finally be released. Even then, this doesn’t appear to abide by the GPL as kernel sources that companies release are required to match the binaries which ship with the device.

Why the delay?

We don’t know for sure why Motorola is apparently not releasing proper sources, but according to Somcom3X it could be done to scrub references to future devices which may be referenced in the source code, or to hide features they are working on. It does not make much sense that they are willingly taking so long to release kernel sources, and then removing drivers from them.

Motorola should be aware that by doing so they are not abiding by the license. Sources need to be released at the same time as the binaries are released, yet it has taken Motorola months. These delays do not make sense — it should not take months to release a kernel source for a device, let alone an incomplete one. Smaller OEMs can (and do) comply with the GPL, with ease. We expect better from Motorola.

What are the consequences?

In theory, Motorola could be sued for violations of the GPL, but that probably won’t happen. Many companies have violated the GPL at some stage and not faced legal action, but there have been cases where companies have faced legal action. The Free Software Foundation can and has enforced the GPL in the past.

The best thing we can right now is to push for Motorola to release full kernel sources. A company should not release kernel sources which do not work. These violations of GPL attack the open source community as a whole, and we hope that they will eventually release proper, timely kernel sources for their devices.

Motorola releases list of devices that will get Android Oreo

Now that Android 8.0 Oreo is out in the wild for Google’s Pixel and Nexus devices, now the attention turns to Android manufacturers to see what devices will get the update and the speed at which they receive the updates. Motorola is one such manufacturer, and with a slew of Android devices under its belt, it’s time to take a look at which will get Oreo.

Taking a look at the list, the more notable omissions are the Moto G4 Play, Moto G4, and Moto G4 Plus, all three of which were released in 2016. Even though they were all upgraded to Nougat, it looks as if that will be the last major Android update they will receive, which is a bit of a letdown but something that has become a trend with budget smartphones.

Also of note is some of the language Motorola uses with certain devices, whose Oreo updates are “pending partner support.” Keep in mind that, even though Motorola is behind the updates, the carriers are the ones that push them out, unless the device is unlocked. As such, you should also pay attention to your carrier if you have any of the Z-branded phones, since they are the ones who set the update timetable for their phones.

Finally, the list does not include the upcoming Moto X4, which looks to be the first Android One phone to launch in the US. Then again, the Moto X4 isn’t even available for purchase in the country or around the world yet, so keep your fingers crossed that an update to Oreo is in the works.

Vertu, a luxury British smartphone maker, shuts down handcrafting £40k devices with loss of nearly 200 jobs in Hampshire

In what may come as little surprise to many of us, not enough people were willing to spend thousands of pounds on a luxury smartphone it turns out – but that means the end of high-end devices individually handcrafted in the heart of the English countryside.

Vertu, the maker of smartphones encrusted with jewels, lined with alligator skin and retailing for as much as £40,000, has closed after failing to be rescued by a Paris-exiled Turkish tycoon.

The shuttering of Vertu comes with the loss of almost 200 jobs at its state of the art factory in Hampshire, the Telegraph reports.

Murat Hakan Uzan snapped up the company, first created by Nokia in the 90s, from Chinese firm Godin Holdings earlier this year for £50m. The manufacturing part of the business went into administration with an accounting deficit of £128m, but Uzan’s offer of £1.9m to buy it back in a pre-pack deal failed because it wasn’t financially viable, the newspaper reports.

More than half a million Vertu phones have been sold to date according to the firm and even in June it said it had signed a $40m deal with TCL, the Chinese firm behind the return of the Blackberry, to use its technology in the phones it was making in Hampshire.

That was made under the new umbrella company for Vertu based in Paris, Vertu AK shortly before the factory went under. According to the FT, it still owns the Vertu brand, technology and design license and Uzan wants to rebuild it.

The phone itself was a pretty basic Android model, but each one was handcrafted and customised for each buyer using materials such as sapphire crystal for its screens, calfskin and gem stones, rather than being mass manufactured in China.

It partnered with Bentley and also offered a concierge service along with “money-can’t-buy experiences” and offers such as a £6,000 discount off a Hermes Birkin bag, for those who could afford such a lifestyle.

Vertu is not the only one eyeing such a seemingly lucrative niche in the market, but struggling to make it work.

Sirin Labs, an Israeli founded Switzerland based startup, launched the £10,000 Solarin smartphone last year and boasted endorsements from stars Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio. It laid off 30 staff – a third of its workforce – in March and said it will “make devices more accessible to the mass market”.

That hasn’t put off Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android operating system, who has launched his own high-end smartphone after leaving the Google fold. The Essential Phone is a much more realistically priced $699, however, and he already has an impressive pedigree.

Samsung has launched a bug bounty program to find and neutralize bugs impacting the firm’s mobile platform.

On Wednesday, the company said the new scheme focuses on mobile devices and their firmware, including the Galaxy S series, the Note series, Galaxy A and J product lines, and the Galaxy Tab.

In total, 38 mobile devices have been included in the bug bounty, ranging from low-end to premium mobile devices manufactured by the South Korean electronics giant.

Researchers interested in finding vulnerabilities must test active devices which are up-to-date with the latest firmware and security patches, and vulnerabilities on third-party applications used to exploit bugs must be specific to Samsung Mobile devices, applications, or services.

Vulnerabilities have been categorized into four sections; critical, high, moderate, and low, and based on the severity of bug reports, rewards will range from between $200 and $200,000.

Critical issues include code execution, remote crashing, and device bricking, Secure Boot bypass, and the remote bypass of user interaction requires on package installations or similar activities.

Bugs classified as of “high” importance include remote code execution without privileges, unauthorized access to data secured by the TEE, local permanent denial-of-service, and the general bypass of operating system protections.

The highest rewards are reserved for reports with working Proof-of-Concept (PoC) codes included, and “even higher” amounts will be issued for bugs leading to the compromise of the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) or mobile Bootloaders.

“We look forward to your continued interests and participations in our Samsung Mobile Security Rewards Program,” Samsung says. “Through this rewards program, we hope to build and maintain valuable relationships with researchers who coordinate disclosure of security issues with Samsung Mobile.”

When duplicate reports are received, only the first one is eligible for a reward, according to Samsung.

In addition, reports of bugs which have “no security impact,” those which need physical access and developer debugging tools such as ADB, vulnerabilities covered by other programs — such as Android Rewards or Qualcomm’s bug bounty scheme — and reports based on security flaws which are already public will not result in any rewards.

Samsung asks for bug reports to be made privately and for them not to be publicly disclosed at the time of submissions, and promises to respond to triage the issue within 48 hours with a “best effort” pledge of fixing problems within 90 days.
