Apple Iphone X vs Samsung Galaxy S8: Pistols at dawn for the top deal with off

Apple has announced the Iphone X, celebrating 10 years of the Iphone with a new leading edition of the handset. Apple suggests this is the future of smartphones, dropping the dwelling button, embracing new technologies and currently being the major change in Iphone layout considering that Iphone 1.

But is this the future of smartphones? We have pitched it up versus the Samsung Galaxy S8, the telephone it most carefully sits subsequent to in a amount of parts.

We have torn our way as a result of these two devices, we’ve issued the buy and to settle this top struggle of the specs, it can be pistols at dawn, in complete honour and with all decorum.

Here is how the Iphone X compares to the Galaxy S8.

  • Iphone X has higher screen to system ratio
  • Iphone X is lesser
  • Both equally supply IP environmental safety
  • Both equally have glass entrance and back again, with metal edges

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is created with a metal main and glass to the entrance and rear of the device. The glass is Gorilla Glass 5 entrance and back again for safety versus scratches even though the development gives IP68 safety versus h2o and dust. The S8 is a twin curved Infinity Show, and it steps 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm and weighs 155g.

The Iphone X steps 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm so it is lesser than the Galaxy S8 even though it can be heavier at 178g, likely down to the use of surgical quality metal relatively than aluminium for those edges. It gives IP67 safety. The layout of the Iphone X is related to Samsung, with Apple adopting a 19:9 (ish) part for the show, lending some similarity to Samsung’s device that launched in April 2017.

Apple have pushed the extremes, even so, escalating the screen to system ratio and even though it would not just take the curved edges of the Galaxy S8, it does minimize the bezel prime and bottom, other than for that exclusive notch at the prime. In some methods, it out Infinity Shows the Samsung Infinity Show, but that notch layout is hard to keep away from. Apple suggests this is the toughest glass you can discover on a smartphone.

The fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S8 is on the rear of the handset subsequent to the digicam, even though a virtual dwelling button sits underneath the show on the entrance the Iphone X gives Encounter ID unlocking, with no fingerprint scanner.

The Iphone X is a enormous change for Apple, but there’s a slight emotion that Samsung obtained listed here very first and we adore those curved edges to the show.

  • Both equally characteristic a 5.8-inch OLED show
  • Both equally supply extensive part ratios
  • Samsung gives twin curves to edges
  • Samsung is a higher resolution
  • Both equally support HDR

With all the rumours of Samsung giving the show for the Iphone X and the go to OLED for Apple’s new device, it can be quick to see how these two devices could possibly be related. Apple’s part ratio appears to be like extra like 19:9 compared to Samsung’s 18.5:9, but each are a globe away from the 16:9 of the earlier, each a related concept.

The use of OLED implies punchier colours, improved contrast and blacker blacks. That is extensive been the trait of Samsung’s shows and the Galaxy S8 is the greatest nonetheless. The change in part implies much less black bars in that widescreen motion picture information and a fantastic splitscreen working experience. Samsung gives a 2960 x 1440 resolution, 570ppi and a brightness of more than 1000 nits.

Apple very a lot repeats this general performance with the new Iphone X show, but chooses a reduce resolution at 2437 x 1125 pixels for 458ppi, and with a brightness of 625 nits. What does this mean? It implies that technically, Samsung can show extra exact depth and give you sharper photographs, even though extra pixels implies extra battery electric power.

Samsung’s show can also go a lot brighter which is fantastic for beating reflections and likely implies extra impactful HDR information as the peak brightness can be so a lot higher. Yet again, that places large requires on the battery and allows not dismiss those curved edges which give a wholly bezel-fewer outcome.

Apple also supports HDR, but includes Dolby Vision which Samsung would not. This is a universal choice from Samsung that applies to its TVs much too. Dolby Vision could possibly technically be extra capable as an HDR structure, but with information currently being so scarce at the minute, this would not give Apple a large gain on working day 1.

What does give Apple the edge is the Legitimate Tone technology it can be rolling more than from the iPad Professional. This will guarantee that the white and color equilibrium fits the natural environment to make your information seem its greatest. We adore it on the iPad and it could very well keep away from that criticism that Samsung generally faces of currently being a little bit much too saturated with colours on its telephones.

Both equally these shows seem staggering. Vive la OLED révolution!

  • Iphone X has a twin digicam
  • Iphone X gives twin OIS
  • Samsung has a wider aperture

When it comes to the cameras, Iphone X has a distinct edge. Samsung’s more mature Galaxy S8 would not have a twin digicam, so you might be on the lookout at a 12-megapixel Twin Pixel sensor, f/1.7 with OIS.

The Iphone X by contrast has a extensive-angle and telephoto digicam, each 12-megapixel and each presenting optical impression stabilisation. If you want to contend with this, you might be likely to have to go to the Samsung Galaxy Be aware 8 alternatively, or hold out for the Galaxy S9 in 2018.

The Iphone gives f/1.8 and f/2.4 on its cameras (extensive and telephoto respectively), so Samsung can let in a very little extra mild. What definitely issues listed here is how very well that impression details is then processed and Apple has a new committed ISP to do just that.

Samsung’s digicam is an fantastic performer, fantastic in minimal mild and very trusted, but with optical zoom from that telephoto lens and a range of clever functions like portrait lighting, the Iphone X has extra functions at its disposal.

Both equally digicam are likely to be fantastic, but how they evaluate in a straight shootout is nonetheless to be found.

  • Apple A11 Bionic chip with M11 coprocessor
  • Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 for Samsung
  • 64GB storage and microSD regular for S8
  • Both equally supply wireless charging each support quickly charging
  • Encounter ID on Iphone, fingerprint on Galaxy S8

Components is 1 of the most hard parts of comparison for Apple vs Android devices. Apple would not have a tendency to say much too a lot about what is powering its telephones – other than to say they are extra powerful than the previous. In the situation of the Iphone X, it can be a hexa-main chipset, with two cores for hefty lifting and four for reduce electric power operate.

We know it can be extra powerful than the Iphone 7, with a marked enhancement in graphics general performance. Apple’s edge comes in pairing components and application for complete optimisation, generally having far better general performance out of fewer powerful components than its rivals.

The Galaxy S8 makes use of possibly the Exynos or Qualcomm 835 platform, each octo-main with a related arrangement and each have been fantastic performers. The Galaxy S8 flies and is a very capable handset. We suspect that in every day jobs, you can see no lag on possibly telephone and at the moment it can be hard to say which is likely to be the far better performer.

What we can say is that Samsung gives higher adaptability in storage, with 64GB regular and microSD for enlargement versus Apple’s 64GB regular. If you want extra area, you have to spend extra dollars – and in the situation of Apple, a ton extra dollars.

On the battery entrance we have a related tale. The Galaxy S8 has 3000mAh battery that will previous you as a result of the working day.  Apple suggests that the Iphone X will give you 2 hours extra than the Iphone 7, so all over again, that’s the full working day.

Both equally supply quickly charging as a result of cables, even so, and each supply wireless charging and each support Qi. Samsung also supports the rival structure, PMA.

When it comes to protection, Samsung sticks with a fingerprint scanner, but its placement on the rear of the telephone is a very little uncomfortable. Apple claims that its Encounter ID is extra secure than fingerprint and makes use of an array of sensors on the entrance of the telephone to unlock it. It is a very distinct method, even though Samsung also gives iris scanning: each involve on the lookout at the telephone to get it to unlock.

  • iOS 11 with a twist
  • Android Nougat with a twist

This is wherever the subject divides, you might be possibly an iOS fan or an Android fan. The Iphone X runs iOS 11, the most current version of Apple’s cell application, bringing with it a new Command Centre and a range of new functions.

On the Iphone X there’s a slight change to this arrangement, with a swipe up to go dwelling and a swipe down to get to Command Centre or your notifications – which is rather a lot how Android will work much too, ironically.

Samsung’s reworking of Android is the most accomplished Android skin you can discover and remarkably it would not sluggish matters down when it comes to working with it. It is unquestionably packed with selections and functions, in lots of methods reflecting the type of ecosystem that Apple has crafted.

Apple has that edge of pairing components and application, is generally entrance of the line when it comes to ecosystem support and generally this implies application updates and functions that you should not make it to Android. In some situations the working experience is the exact, with the broad the vast majority of apps available on each platforms.

Apple’s killer enjoyment characteristic on the Iphone X while is animoji – animated emoji. Working with that clever entrance digicam you can map your deal with so you can develop into a speaking poo emoji (or a range of animals). It is critically enjoyment and we are not guaranteed how extensive it can be likely to just take Android to supply just about anything related.

And let’s deal with it. The Iphone X will update to the subsequent version of iOS on the working day Apple needs it to. For the Samsung telephone, you have no concept when Oreo is likely to land.

  • Samsung Galaxy S8 is more affordable
  • Yep, that’s about it

You will find not a large volume to say listed here. The Galaxy S8 is now 6-months aged and there are discounts for this handset all more than the location. You can acquire it for £689 SIM free of charge from Samsung.

The Iphone X, even so, falls into a new leading tier for Apple, extra pricey than the new Iphone 8 styles. The 64GB Iphone X will expense you £999.

That is about all there is to it – Iphone X is an pricey telephone.

So there we have it. Apple has the edge with the Iphone X in currently being a brand new telephone. When it possibly betters the Samsung Galaxy S8 in a amount of parts – digicam, likely show realism and possibly electric power – that is likely to change with the launch of the Galaxy S9. That is the enjoyment of owning launch cycles that overlap.

You will find a ton of similarity. Both equally supply a related development and each these rivals are closer in measurement and show than they have been for a extensive time. Samsung pushes resolution and those twin curved edges have a wow variable that’s even now delightful. Apple’s Legitimate Tone show tech could possibly keep matters on the realism scale, even if on paper the show is fewer capable.

We you should not doubt that the Iphone X will out-complete the Galaxy S8 in some working day-to-working day factors all over application pace and general performance. This is generally the situation, with Apple’s close eye on components and application optimisation. Finally the application working experience will tumble to individual preference, but we are guaranteed each will be a very first class working experience.

Having said that, even though the specs in lots of situations align on these related devices, the rate does not. Samsung is clearly the extra reasonably priced device, priced closer to the regular Iphone 8 than the Iphone X. We just hope that the start of the Iphone X would not see Android telephone brands attempting to contend on rate. Apple can maintain those higher rates, but we are not guaranteed other tech firms can.

It looks like Microsoft is planning to release its very own sprawling adventure game similar to the PlayStation 4 exclusive.

That’s according to a new Microsoft job ad for a lead environment artist for a new triple-A blockbuster.

The job listing was posted on the LinkedIn profile of Microsoft’s Sandor Roberts.

“Looking for Lead Environment Artist for Microsoft AAA Nextgen Title,” the post reads. “Style: similar to Horizon Zero Dawn.”

The stunning Sony exclusive is the perfect showcase of the PS4 Pro. Check out the Photo Mode screenshots below for a look at how good Horizon Zero Dawn looks in 4K.

It’s likely Microsoft wants something similar to show off the power of the Xbox One X.

Grand Theft Auto V has now outsold Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 | VentureBeat | PC Gaming

With releases like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nier, and Horizon Zero Dawn, 2017 is already one of the best years ever for games. But plenty of people are still happily buying an old game instead. Grand Theft Auto V is the fourth best-selling game since the start of 2017. The open-world crime sim debuted in November 2013, but it is still regularly outselling most other games, and it finished June as the No. 3 best-seller ahead of new releases like Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy and Arms.

Here’s a look at the top 10 best-selling games of 2017 so far:

  1. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
  3. For Honor
  4. Grand Theft Auto V
  5. Horizon Zero Dawn
  6. Injustice 2
  7. Mass Effect: Andromeda
  8. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  9. NBA 2K17
  10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Grand Theft Auto V has actually climbed this chart. It was No. 5 in May, but it surpassed Horizon Zero Dawn in June to overtake the No. 4 spot. This means that Grand Theft Auto V has sold more copies in 2017 than Horizon, Mass Effect: Andromeda, or Resident Evil 7. In Horizon’s case, that’s a PS4 exclusive compared to GTA V’s multiplatform availability — although that advantage doesn’t usually mean much for a four-year-old game.

That wasn’t the only shift in the 2017 year-to-date chart. Zelda: Breath of the Wild worked its way into the No. 2 spot after supplanting Ubisoft’s blade battler For Honor. It’s important to keep in mind that Zelda is No. 2 even though it is the only game in that top 10 to not include digital sales.

Ubisoft, however, is likely not to upset about For Honor losing its spot to Nintendo. The French publisher is still having a huge year.

“Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the top-selling title year to date,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Publisher Ubisoft is also leading in overall publisher consumer spend.”

NASA reviews options for Dawn extended mission

WASHINGTON — NASA expects to make a decision within the next two months whether to keep the Dawn spacecraft in orbit around the largest body in the main asteroid belt or have it fly past another asteroid.

Dawn completed a one-year extended mission in orbit around Ceres at the end of June, but NASA did not announce whether the spacecraft’s mission would be extended again. NASA spokesperson Laurie Cantillo said July 5 that the agency’s planetary science division is still reviewing an independent report on the science the mission has achieved at Ceres.

“NASA’s Planetary Science Division has received and is now reviewing a report from an independent science review panel with regard to Dawn’s completion of Level 1 science requirements at Ceres,” Cantillo told SpaceNews.

That review is required before NASA makes a decision on Dawn’s future. The spacecraft could remain in orbit around Ceres or “use its remaining fuel to travel to another asteroid,” she said.

Cantillo said that “points of clarification” about the report are currently being discussed are part of the overall science review of the mission. “Once completed, a decision will be made, most likely in the next 30–60 days,” she said. Spacecraft operations will continue during the review process.

A project scientist said last month that the mission was considering a flyby. “It’s an option,” Carol Raymond, deputy principal investigator for Dawn at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said at a June 13 meeting of NASA’s Small Bodies Assessment Group (SBAG). She said then that the mission was “in the process of discussing with NASA options for a second extended mission” but declined to give additional details about those options.

Project officials proposed an asteroid flyby last year as part of the biannual senior review of planetary science missions seeking extensions. That proposal called for leaving orbit around Ceres in July 2016 and making a “slow” flyby of the asteroid Adeona in May 2019.

The NASA report that reviewed those extended mission proposals criticized the Dawn proposal for “discrepancies,” including a lack of specifics and scientific justification, which it blamed on being submitted late in the process. NASA decided instead on a one-year extended mission that remained in orbit around Ceres, in part to ensure that the mission’s Level 1 science requirements were met.

Dawn, developed as part of NASA’s Discovery program of low-cost planetary science missions, launched in 2007. It entered orbit around the main belt asteroid Vesta in July 2011, remaining in orbit there for more than one year. Dawn used its ion propulsion system to leave orbit in September 2012 and travel to Ceres, a body designated by the International Astronomical Union as a “dwarf planet,” entering orbit in March 2015.

The spacecraft has continued operations despite problems with its reaction wheels, used for attitude control. After suffering the loss of two of its four reaction wheels earlier in the mission, a third wheel malfunctioned in April. The spacecraft went into safe mode briefly, but controllers resumed operations with hydrazine thrusters taking over for the failed wheel.

That failure will eventually lead to the end of the mission when the spacecraft runs out of hydrazine. “It does reduce our lifetime because we have to use hydrazine at a faster rate,” Raymond said at the SBAG meeting in June.

That lifetime, she said, is dependent on the spacecraft’s orbital altitude. Dawn has spiraled out to a higher orbit during its extended mission, which reduces the amount of hydrazine needed for attitude control. “The lifetime is now highly dependent on orbital altitude because we need to use the jets to fight the gravity gradient torques,” she said.

In its current high orbit, Raymond said that Dawn had sufficient hydrazine, as well as xenon propellant used for the ion engine, to operate at least through the end of 2018. In a lower orbit, like that used by Dawn earlier in the mission for high-resolution mapping of Ceres, the spacecraft’s lifetime “would likely be limited to weeks.”

Dawn mission managers await NASA decision on spacecraft’s future – Spaceflight Now

The future of NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, running low on hydrazine fuel and now flying around the dwarf planet Ceres without the help of internal pointing wheels, will be decided in the coming weeks by top space agency managers.

Scientists have not ruled out sending Dawn on a journey across the solar system to another destination, a voyage that counterintuitively might burn less of the craft’s remaining hydrazine propellant than if Dawn stayed in orbit around Ceres, where it has resided since March 2015.

Dawn’s primary mission ended in June 2016, and NASA officials approved a one-year extension that expires June 30. The fate of Dawn after June 30 remains uncertain, but senior managers at NASA Headquarters are expected to soon decide whether the spacecraft should be turned off, continue exploring Ceres, or depart the dwarf planet and perhaps fly by an asteroid.

Officials are expected to consider the financial cost of Dawn’s operations and the scientific payoff of continuing the mission, either at Ceres or another destination.

“We are in the process of assessing with NASA options for a second extended mission,” said Carol Raymond, Dawn’s deputy principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Raymond said Tuesday at a meeting of NASA’s Small Bodies Assessment Group, a community of asteroid and comet scientists, that one option for Dawn’s future could be to send the probe away from Ceres to encounter an asteroid.

Otherwise, Dawn could remain at Ceres for further exploration of the previously-unvisited world, a dwarf planet with a diameter matching Texas’s, and the largest object in the asteroid belt.

The gray landscape of Ceres is scattered with impact craters, some of which contain salt deposits in the form of bright spots that greeted scientists with mystery as Dawn arrived in early 2015.

Dawn also found evidence of an ice-rich later in Ceres’s crust just below the world’s charcoal-colored surface, and scientists believe Ceres harbored an underground ocean in the past.

The mission also discovered a tenuous, temporary atmosphere containing water vapor around Ceres, and scientists have linked its fluctuations to the intensity of the solar wind.

Ceres was Dawn’s second destination after the craft orbited the giant asteroid Vesta in 2011 and 2012.

Occator Crater, measuring 57 miles (92 kilometers) across and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep, contains the brightest area on Ceres. This region has been the subject of intense interest since Dawn’s approach to the dwarf planet in early 2015. Dawn’s close-up view reveals a dome in a smooth-walled pit in the bright center of the crater. Numerous linear features and fractures crisscross the top and flanks of this dome. Prominent fractures also surround the dome and run through smaller, bright regions found within the crater. This image shows the bright spots in a mosaic of two Dawn images taken using a shorter exposure time. The shorter exposure reveals details within the bright features that are overexposed, or nearly so, in the full mosaic. The images used to make these mosaics were taken from Dawn’s low-altitude mapping orbit (LAMO), 240 miles (385 kilometers) above Ceres. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA/PSI

The solar-powered spacecraft, fitted with solar array wings spanning 65 feet (19.7 meters) tip-to-tip, was built by Orbital ATK and launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket in September 2007.

The mission has exceeded all of its scientific objectives, and the last year of bonus operations at Ceres included extra imaging of the dwarf planet, and a unique “opposition” observation in late April that positioned the Dawn spacecraft directly between the sun and Occator Crater.

Scientists hoped the favorable sun angle would yield new insights about the bright salt material inside Occator.

Dawn lost the third of its four reaction wheels — spinning devices similar to gyroscopes which use momentum to control the craft’s pointing — April 23, less than a week before the opposition observation opportunity.

The science campaign went ahead as planned after ground controllers restored Dawn to its regular flight mode, but using hydrazine-fueled rocket thrusters instead of reaction wheels.

Dawn’s first reaction wheel failed in 2010, before it reached Vesta. A second wheel stopped working in 2012 as the craft’s ion propulsion system drove Dawn away from Vesta for the trip to Ceres.

Engineers designed Dawn to control its attitude, or orientation, in space with three reaction wheels, one for each pointing axis. A spare fourth reaction wheel was added for redundancy.

Experts from JPL and Orbital ATK devised a hybrid method of controlling Dawn’s attitude with the two remaining reaction wheels and hydrazine thrusters, the spacecraft now must fully rely on its rocket jets, wrote Marc Rayman, Dawn’s chief engineer at JPL, in a mission update posted on a NASA website.

“With the third wheel failure, we can be grateful that each wheel provided as much benefit as it did,” Rayman wrote. “The wheels allowed Dawn to conduct extremely valuable work while using the hydrazine very sparingly.”

Raymond said Tuesday that the third reaction wheel failure was “certainly not a mission-ending event, but it does reduce our lifetime because we have to use the hydrazine at a faster rate.”

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft successfully observed Ceres at opposition on April 29, 2017, taking images from a position exactly between the sun and Ceres’ surface. This movie shows these opposition images, with contrast enhanced to highlight brightness differences. The bright spots of Occator stand out particularly well on an otherwise relatively bland surface. Dawn took these images from an altitude of about 12,000 miles (20,000 kilometers). Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA

Dawn will use more hydrazine to maintain its attitude when it is closer to Ceres, but spiraling the probe away from the dwarf planet with its three xenon-fueled ion engines would require even less of the hydrazine maneuvering propellant.

“The amount of hydrazine Dawn uses depends on its activities,” Rayman wrote last month. “Whenever it fires an ion engine, the engine controls two of the three axes, significantly reducing the consumption of hydrazine.

“In orbit around Vesta and Ceres, the probe often trains its sensors on the alien landscapes beneath it. The lower the orbital altitude, the faster the orbital velocity, so Dawn needs to turn faster to keep the ground in its sights,” Rayman wrote. “Also, the gravitational attraction of these massive worlds tends to tug on the unusually large solar arrays in a way that would turn the ship in an unwanted direction. That force is stronger at lower altitude, so Dawn needs to work harder to counter it.

“The consequence is that Dawn uses more hydrazine in orbit around Vesta and Ceres than when it is journeying between worlds, orbiting the sun and maneuvering with its ion engine. And it uses more hydrazine in lower orbits than in higher ones,” Rayman wrote.

There is plenty of xenon gas left aboard Dawn, officials said.

Raymond said Dawn is currently in an egg-shaped orbit around Ceres that ranges in distance between 12,000 miles (20,000 kilometers) and 30,000 miles (50,000 kilometers). The probe traveled as close as 240 miles (385 kilometers) to Ceres last year.

“We have enough resources, hydrazine and xenon, to support operations through at least the end of 2018,” Raymond said. “That will be depending the decision at (NASA) Headquarters what we will do with those resources.”

That lifetime prediction depends on Dawn remaining far away from Ceres.

“One day at our low-altitude mapping orbit, which was at 385 kilometers, would be equivalent to about 18 days (of hydrazine fuel) at higher altitude, which is what we’re in now,” Raymond said.

“Lifetime at a lower altitude would likely be limited to weeks at this point,” she said.

A decision on Dawn’s future in the coming weeks — whether it will stay at Ceres or head elsewhere — echoes a similar stay or go choice that faced NASA managers last June.

Dawn’s science team last year proposed dispatching Dawn toward asteroid Adeona, a primitive, carbon-rich remnant from a collision that destroyed a much larger body, for a relatively slow-speed flyby in May 2019, but NASA officials decided keeping the probe in orbit around Ceres would yield a greater scientific return.

One possible fate has been ruled out.

Scientists don’t want Dawn to collide with Ceres and potentially spoil future exploration of the airless world.

“When our planetary protection requirements were negotiated, (scientists) already made the prediction that Ceres was an ocean world in the past, and could possibly be an ocean world today,” Raymond said. “We’ve been vindicated, so our planetary protection requirement was don’t land, don’t crash.”

Before shutting off Dawn for good, navigators will ensure the spacecraft is on a “quarantine” trajectory that avoids impacting Ceres, she said.

New PlayStation VR games at E3: Skyrim, Until Dawn prequel, and more

New PlayStation VR games at E3: Skyrim, Until Dawn prequel, and Final Fantasy XV fishing
The Inpatient – Until Dawn gets an origin story in VR

Sony has revealed a wave of new VR games at their pre-show press conference, including brand new titles Star Child, Bravo Team, and Moss.

God Of War - Kratos is back... next yearPS4 E3 trailers – watch God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn DLC, Days Gone, and more

Although there’s been a steady stream of great indie games ever since the launch of the PlayStation VR, it has been worrying that Sony have released relatively few themselves.

The recent Farpoint was the last one they had scheduled but now ahead of E3 they’ve announced six new games, many of which are first party.

You can read about the rest of Sony’s E3 line-up here, but all the games below are compatible with PlayStation VR or can only be played with the headset.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
Bethesda has their own pre-E3 event last night, where they showed off two VR games – but they never mentioned this one. The slow pace of Bethesda’s first person action role-players are a good fit for VR and even though this is the fourth version of the game so far (including the Special Edition and Switch versions) we bet many fans will still be happy to dive in once again.

Star Child
We’re not quite sure what was going on with this new VR game but it was interesting that it was a third person, 2D scrolling adventure – not a first person game at all. Whether the giant robot thing at the end remains your friend throughout the game we’ll have to wait and see.

The Inpatient
Although it’s not really obvious from the trailer Supermassive’s second game is a prequel to Until Dawn. Set 60 years before, in the same asylum from the original game, it seems to be aiming for a slower burn, psychological style of horror; compared to the shlock of the original. Although how exactly the two stories link up remains to be seen.

Monster Of The Deep: Final Fantasy XV
This is exactly what it looks like, as strange as that may seem: a fishing sim set in the world of Final Fantasy XV. That means a collection of considerably odder fish than the usual bass and trout, even though it has some of the same vibe as the old Sega fishing games.

Bravo Team
British developer Supermassive managed to have three brand new games at Sony’s press conference, but at face value this one looks like a fairly unremarkable third and first person shooter. The fact that it’s VR does make it interesting though, and we imagine it probably uses Farpoint’s aim controller.

Moss
Like Star Child this is another third person platformer, which is not as strange an idea as it sounds. Third person games work perfectly well in VR, turning the whole level into a 3D world you can peer into. Or at least that’s how we assume this is going to work.

NASA’s Dawn Probe at Dwarf Planet Ceres Loses Another Reaction Wheel

NASA's Dawn Probe at Dwarf Planet Ceres Loses Another Reaction Wheel

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has lost another orientation-maintaining reaction wheel, but the failure doesn’t threaten the probe’s continuing work at the dwarf planet Ceres, agency officials said.

The malfunction occurred on Sunday (April 23), as Dawn was preparing for a planned Saturday (April 29) observation of Ceres’ mysterious Occator Crater from an “opposition” position. This geometry, in which the spacecraft will be directly between the crater and the sun, could reveal new insights about Occator and its intriguing bright spots, NASA officials said.

Dawn has now lost three of its four reaction wheels, but such failures haven’t unduly affected the probe, which has been orbiting the 590-mile-wide (950 kilometers) Ceres since March 2015. (Before that, Dawn circled the protoplanet Vesta — the second-largest body in the asteroid belt, behind Ceres — from July 2011 through September 2012.)

Indeed, mission team members are used to controlling Dawn’s orientation using the probe’s hydrazine thrusters instead of the reaction wheels, said Dawn chief engineer and mission director Marc Rayman, who’s based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This experienced group of space explorers knows how to do it without the reaction wheels,” Rayman wrote in a mission update on Tuesday (April 25). He added, parenthetically, “(For most of the time since Dawn left Vesta in 2012, including the first year of Ceres operations, all four wheels were turned off. This will be no different.)”

Dawn should still be able to carry out the Occator opposition observations on Saturday and perform other work as desired, Rayman and NASA officials said.

The $467 million Dawn mission launched in September 2007, with the primary goal of learning more about the solar system’s early days by studying Ceres and Vesta, two building blocks left over from the planet-formation era (hence the mission’s name).

Dawn wrapped up its primary mission in June 2016 and is now operating on an extended mission. The spacecraft is the first ever to orbit a dwarf planet and the first to circle two separate objects beyond the Earth-moon system.

Dawn lost its first reaction wheel in 2010 and its second in 2012.
