However, Symantec didn’t stop shopping there. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Symantec had held discussions with Splunk for a possible acquisition. Splunk has been making big investments around its security portfolio as it looks to provide a next-generation SIEM and analytics solution. Bloomberg reported that the talks were called off after Symantec started probing Splunk finances compared to its valuation, which currently sits around $9.4 billion.

Symantec did not respond to CRN requests for comment. RSA said it doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation.

The talks come as Symantec looks to build out its vast cybersecurity platform. The company has already made multiple acquisitions in the past year, in areas such as cloud security, mobile security, threat prevention, identity protection, and more. The company does not have a SIEM offering; it exited that business in 2013 by discontinuing its Symantec Security Information Manager offering.

RSA and Splunk both stand out in the market as SIEM specialists and security market leaders.

RSA offers a broad portfolio of security solutions, including offerings in identity and access management with SecurID; SIEM and threat detection and response with NetWitness; governance, risk and compliance with Archer; and fraud prevention. Symantec overlaps in just one area – it, too, offers identity and access management and GRC solutions.

Other standalone companies in the SIEM or security analytics space include LogRhythm, Exabeam, SumoLogic, and Cybereason. IBM, HPE and McAfee also offer SIEM solutions. 

In a recent interview with CRN, Symantec President and COO Michael Fey said the company is looking to make further acquisitions. He did not specify what areas Symantec would evaluate, saying only that it will focus on areas that “add value and metrics” to the portfolio.

  • Artificial intelligence: One notable enterprise workload that NVIDIA’s GPUs are being used to accelerate is artificial intelligence. One recent win for NVIDIA in this area: Retailer Wal-Mart is planning to build massive data centers powered by NVIDIA’s GPUs to run AI workloads. IDC estimates that total spending on cognitive and AI systems will grow at a 55% annual rate through 2020, reaching $46 billion. NVIDIA is in a position to win a significant chunk of the market.
  • Self-driving cars: NVIDIA’s DRIVE PX platform, which is essentially a supercomputer for automobiles, is the core of the company’s efforts to power the self-driving car of the future. Tesla is already including NVIDIA hardware in every car that comes off the line, and other automakers, including Toyota, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, are building their self-driving efforts around NVIDIA’s DRIVE PX platform.

NVIDIA is a far larger, and far more profitable, company than it was during the dot-com bubble. In 1999, NVIDIA produced $374.5 million of revenue and $38.1 million of net income. In 2016, the company produced $6.9 billion of revenue and $1.7 billion of net income.

But there’s one metric that should induce some caution among those considering an investment in NVIDIA. The stock trades for around 17 times last year’s revenue, a multiple that’s far beyond anything the stock achieved during the mania of the dot-com bubble.

Relative to earnings, NVIDIA stock is pricey, trading for 66 times last year’s earnings. That’s a high price to pay, and it assumes that earnings will continue to grow at a blistering pace for quite some time. When it comes to powering self-driving cars, there’s no shortage of other companies vying for a spot, including Intel and NXP Semiconductors. NVIDIA is the ultimate growth stock, with the company planting a flag in almost every major trend currently captivating investors. Apple Watch Series 3 vs. Series 1: which should I buy?

Still, now we have all the details about how Apple managed to fit LTE into its smartwatch and preserve battery life (a better wireless chip), as well as how much it will cost you to get a standalone computing device on your wrist.

We know all four major US carriers are charging an extra $10 a month to add the Apple Watch to your current phone plan, with the device using the same phone number as your iPhone. We also know all the new specs and configuration details with each tier of the Watch. But the most important question remains: which is the best Apple Watch to buy right now?

There are a number of factors to consider beyond just the LTE addition, from water resistance to a faster processor and Wi-Fi chip to the ability to better communicate and hear from Siri directly through the Watch itself. Let’s start with a spec showdown, however, to make it abundantly clear what your money is getting you with each version of the Watch:

You might be wondering what happened to the Apple Watch Series 2. It turns out, Apple is discontinuing the product entirely in favor of the non-LTE version of the Series 3. It’s an interesting choice, since it will surely upsell some folks from the Series 1. That device is an admittedly more powerful version of the 2015 Apple Watch — thanks to an improved S1P chip over the original device’s single-core S1 chip. Yet it’s still slower and less capable in almost every way than its newer counterparts.

But more reasonable is the notion that Apple would have a hard time selling a one-year-old device against an only incrementally better competitor in the same device family. So it ditched the Series 2, leaving customers with a more simple choice to make.

First and foremost is the decision of whether you want LTE. If you’re the kind of person who’s longed to leave their phone behind on quick errands outside the apartment or when you’re going for a run or to the gym, a standalone Apple Watch could be a big draw. The device not only has GPS built in, but it can also take and receive calls and access music on the go (so long as you’re an Apple Music subscriber).

But the extra $10 a month to ensure the device has connectivity is a hefty purchase, adding up to an additional $120 a year just for the small sliver of times you might be without your phone. The next best option is the standard, non-LTE Apple Watch Series 3, which comes with nearly every single benefit of the more expensive Series 3, save the standalone connectivity.

You still get the built-in GPS and barometric altimeter in the event you’re an avid runner, as well as the new second-generation OLED Retina display with two times the brightness. You also get the S3 dual-core processor, which Apple says is 70 percent faster than the previous generation for tasks like app launching and Siri, and the new W2 wireless chip, which grants you 85 percent faster Wi-Fi connectivity and 50 percent more power efficiency than last year’s S2 chip.

There are a few minor differences (and one major one) that differentiate the two Series 3 devices. There’s a lighter case on the non-LTE option and half the internal storage, with the LTE Series 3 coming with 16GB compared with the standard Series 3’s 8GB. The major change that may irk some potential buyers is the lack of case options for the non-LTE Series 3, which is restricted to the aluminum model. You’ll have to shell out for the LTE version, even if you don’t want to pay the carrier fee to make it work without your phone, just to get an Apple Watch with a stainless steel case or, for the high rollers, the Hermès version or the luxury $1,299 Apple Watch Edition.

Beyond that rather confounding case restriction, one likely governed by Apple’s more maddening revenue-making strategies, the two Series 3 devices are largely identical, save the ability to work with or without a phone. A slightly more difficult pair of choices is whether you should upgrade from the Series 2, which came out only just last year sporting water resistance for the first time, or buy the Series 1 when the Series 3 costs just $100 more. Jumping from the Series 2 to the Series 3 is not all that advisable, especially when all you’re getting is a slightly faster chip set, while the latter choice really depends on only few things, principally why you want an Apple Watch at all.

If you’re interested in an Apple Watch because you’ve always wanted a smartwatch, own an iPhone, and mostly want it to tell the time or to check notifications, then you’re probably better off with a Series 1. If you care about the speed of the device and checking and using apps often throughout the day, then the extra $100 for the faster processor and wireless chip is worth the money. The Series 3 also comes with a bunch of new heart rate monitor options and an improved heart rate sensor, so that’s a factor to consider, too. It’s a tough decision, because not very many consumers can get a reliable grasp on what they’ll use a smartwatch for until they actually wear one.

For me personally, I’ve mostly used my Series 1 device for the last two years for checking the time and staying on top of Facebook Messenger, Slack, text, and email notifications. I hardly ever use apps directly on the device itself, and I rarely use the Glance feature to control music or check the weather when those are tasks I’d more easily be able to do from my phone screen.

So I don’t think I’ll be getting a Series 3, at least not while the device on my wrist today keeps functioning at more or less the same efficiency. (This might not be true with watchOS 4 or future updates down the line.) So going forward, up until the Series 3 starts shipping on September 22nd, it’s worth asking yourself why you want an Apple Watch, what you hope to get out of the device, and whether certain style options or the possibility of future LTE connectivity (if you want it) appeals to you.

1 Artificial Intelligence Stock That Turned $3,000 Into More Than $40,000 in 5 Years — Is It Still a Buy? | Business Markets and Stocks News

If you invested $3,000 in graphics-chip specialist NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) five years ago, you’d now be sitting on top of $40,200 — assuming you reinvested your modest dividends.

This is an incredible haul considering the broader market would have turned your $3,000 into about $5,800.

Let’s look at what’s happened with NVIDIA in recent years to cause investors to drive up the price of its stock, with an eye towards determining if the stock still looks like an attractive buy today.

Transformation from just a chipmaker into an AI player

NVIDIA stock’s tremendous price rise in recent years has been well-earned, as the company has been posting massive growth in revenue and earnings. This growth has largely been driven by NVIDIA’s successful transition from a company heavily focused on graphics processing units (GPUs) for gaming and professional visualization applications into a company that’s also a player in the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) space.

It turns out that the company’s GPUs are great at training artificial neural networks how to think like humans, a developing category of AI called deep learning. Once this became clear to NVIDIA’s founder, CEO Jensen Huang, he began aggressively focusing the company’s efforts on optimizing its GPUs for AI applications — a fact that demonstrates the company’s nimbleness.

NVIDIA’s traditional gaming market has been performing very well — revenue jumped 52% year over year in the second quarter of fiscal 2018, accounting for just over 53% of total revenue — and its professional visualization market has been performing solidly. However, it’s the company’s AI-driven data-center business that is its most powerful growth engine, with revenue in this market platform soaring 175% year over year last quarter. The data-center segment blew by professional visualization in revenue size over the last year and is now NVIDIA’s second-largest business; it accounted for nearly 19% of total revenue last quarter.

NVIDIA’s smallest target market platform, auto, is at the cusp of benefiting big from AI. In the spring of 2016, the company began shipping its DRIVE PX 2 AI platform, a supercomputer for processing and making sense of the data taken in by semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicles. NVIDIA has notched several huge wins in this space. In October, electric-vehicle maker Tesla began using DRIVE PX 2 to power its autopilot on all new vehicles. In 2017, automakers Toyota, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo announced plans to use DRIVE PX 2 to power their autonomous driving systems in vehicles planned for market introduction. And Chinese search engine giant Baidu announced this summer that it’s adopting the platform for its driverless vehicles initiative and partnerships.

A pretty picture of the past, but how does NVIDIA stock look now? 

NVIDIA stock is pricey based on Wall Street analysts’ earnings estimates. It’s trading at 42.9 times analysts’ projected forward earnings, and it sports a five-year PEG (P/E to projected earnings growth five years out) of 3.6. (For some context, fellow chipmaker Intel has a five-year PEG of 1.4.) 

However, I don’t place much stock (pardon the pun) in analysts’ forward earnings estimates. As a group, they’ve been significantly underestimating NVIDIA’s earnings for quite some time — by percentages ranging from 19.3% to 45.6% in the last four quarters, for instance. So it seems much more likely than not that this dynamic will continue — and if it does, then the stock will prove to be not as pricey as suggested by the forward valuations. 

Analysts expect NVIDIA’s earnings to jump 40.6% year over year in the current year and then slow to an average annual growth rate of just 12.9% over the next five years. The odds are highly in favor of that 12.9% proving to be too conservative, in my opinion. This is a company that has a leading position in AI-driven data centers and driverless car applications, and it is poised to get a nice boost once virtual reality and augmented reality take off. That’s not to mention NVIDIA’s leading position in supplying graphics cards for gaming, which is booming thanks to esports and other factors, or the recent tailwind it’s been getting from the rising prices and popularity of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. (GPUs, as it turns out, are great at mining cryptocurrencies.) 

NVIDIA stock could pull back over the short or intermediate term, as it’s due for a breather. The market might do what it often does — overreact — when growth slows next year, as it almost surely will because the year-over-year comparables are going to be mighty tough. However, if NVIDIA’s GPU-based approach to deep learning remains the favored approach (or even one of several favored approaches, as competition surely will heat up) to this subcategory of AI, then investors should be richly rewarded over the long term. AI promises to be gargantuan and touch just about all industries. 

NVIDIA is certainly not a stock to bet your house on, but it has a good risk-reward profile for those who have a longer-term investing outlook and are comfortable with a moderate amount of risk and volatility.
