POKEMON GO UPDATE:
So it wasn’t quite an April fools, but the Silph Road did have one awesome surprise for everyone, with notorious Pokemon bad guys Team Rocket taking over the Silph Road all evening.
If you missed any of the action, it could be quite confusing trying to stumble through all the developments on Reddit, so here’s a handy summary of what exactly took place, courtesy of one Silph Road Reddit user by the name of ‘nononsenseresponse’
“The people in charge of this subreddit made a fun online scavenger hunt by saying they were ‘kidnapped’ by Team Rocket.
“Clues were left on the Silph Road Atlas website for certain locations that would help them in the scavenger hunt.
“In the end, it has lead to New York’s Time Square (as Team Rocket’s ‘headquarters’).
“People using the Silph Road atlas website go to that location can click on a link which should take you to a site where you can ‘fight’ the ultra-rare Pokemon Mewtwo.
“In the Pokemon show, the leader of Team Rocket actually helped to create Mewtwo (before it rebelled), which is why we are fighting Mewtwo at the headquarters.
“The website is, unfortunately, hit very hard by too many people trying to access it – so it is currently nearly impossible to participate in the ‘fight’.
“The Silph Road team are working on fixing it though.”
We hope that clears things up.
Pokemon GO developers Niantic dropped a Gyarados-sized mountain of information yesterday by announcing that Pokemon Go players caught more than half a billion Magikarp during the week-long Water Festival event.
“Great work, Trainers! Collectively, you caught over 589 million Magikarp during the #PokemonGO Water Festival,” a message from the Niantic support team.
Clearly, players haven’t lost their appetite for the game or the occasional events put on by Niantic. and with the continuation of Shiny Pokemon in the game – despite the event coming to an end – it doesn’t appear as though that enthusiasm for the mobile game is going to let up anytime soon.
And with the continuation of Shiny Pokemon in the game, it’s unlikely that the enthusiasm for the mobile game is going to let up anytime soon.
Equally, despite the event coming to an end, Pokemon GO players might want to prepare themselves for a “Big News” announcement happening later today, which could drastically shape how millions of people interact with the game around the globe.
The “Big News” comes from The Silph Road, the website and Reddit group which pulls apart all APK information and tracks Pokemon movements using their own global map.
“Tomorrow may be Saturday, but you’ll want to be here for tomorrow’s announcement, travelers.” read the start of a new Reddit post from the Sub-Reddit’s moderator Dronpes.
“We’re in talks with [an un-named entity] to enable something truly fantastic for the Road. Early access codes will come out tomorrow morning PST.
“We can’t say more now, but we’ll see you bright and early.”
While impossible to say whether this is some elaborate April fools, it certainly seems unlikely and as another Redditor pointed out, Dronpes doesn’t have a history of doing April Fools jokes:
“The Road was around for April Fools last year.
“You can also check dronpes’s history to see he did not post an April Fools joke last year.
“Clearly, he is trustworthy and would not hoodwink us.”
Whatever the announcement might be you can be sure we’ll update Pokemon GO fans the moment some more information is posted.
In the meantime, we’re still awaiting confirmation as to whether the game is going to update the egg hatches players can receive.
As we pointed out last week, Pokemon GO players could be set for a major update to the game and this significant change might have been accidentally leaked by a Pokemon GO Plus trailer (above) before Niantic could make the news official.
It all stems from a brand new trailer for Pokemon GO Plus, the small Bluetooth enabled device that’s aimed at helping players catch Pokemon and spin Pokestops.
However, eagle-eyed Redditors on the Pokemon GO Silph Road Reddit page noticed a very subtle change in the trailer, specifically in relation to the games egg hatching mechanics.
You can see the trailer above, but the gist is that in the trailer Cyndaquil, Chikorita and Totodile, all Gen 2 starter Pokemon, appear to hatch from two 2km eggs.
However, as the original Redditor explains as far as we know, it’s not actually possible to hatch the three Gen 2 starter Pokemon in eggs.
For the record, Chikorita is really hard to see and only appears for a microsecond on the far right of the screen.
So what does this mean? Well, some Pokemon GO players on the Silph Road believe it could be a change linked to an upcoming Easter event.
Another pointed out that this was present in a trailer released in Japan, weeks ago, at the end of February.
So how soon Niantic could be looking to make this change, assuming it’s not just a mistake, is anyone’s guess.
