Playstation have sprung a surprise on millions of gamers around the world by announcing plans to increase the cost of the annual online subscription.

The gaming giants have disclosed information to users informing them that they will need to pay more when the time comes to renew their Playstation Plus account.

The changes come into force from August 31 with many users unhappy about the decision.

For the year you will now need to fork out £49.99 per annum – an increase of £10.

Those who pay in quarterly instalments will need to pay an extra £5 per renewal, costing £19.99.

Monthly subscribers will have to pay an extra pound with the new price rising to £6.99 every time you renew.

In a message to all users, Playstation said: “We will alter the price of a PlayStation®Plus membership at 00:01 BST on August 31 2017. As you are an existing member, this means that all recurring subscription fees payable by you on or after August 31 2017 will be charged at the new price.”

There is a way to avoid to the extra charges and the company have not been shy in hiding it.

In order to avoid the increased costs, you can do something be called ‘stacking’.

In simple terms this means purchasing a subscription at the old price before the changes come into play. This will then be stored or added on depending on the length of your current subscription.

Playstation added: “Up until August 31 2017, you may purchase a PlayStation®Plus subscription at the current price, which will then be added (or “stacked on”) to your current membership period.”

Users are warned to check their accounts in case the ‘auto-renewal’ feature is activated.

If it is it means you could renew your subscription unknowingly and end up paying more than you originally agreed to.

This needs to be done at least 48 hours before the August 31 deadline.

Alternatively, unhappy users can cancel their membership, although the likelihood is you will lose the money spent on the subscription already.
