Google Paid HTC $1.1 Billion To Turn Itself Into a Phone Maker

After years of half-heartedly and occasionally hamfistedly building gadgets, Google’s finally all-in on the hardware game. Google will announce a number of new products on October 4, reportedly including two new phones, a smaller version of the Google Home, and a high-end laptop. And on Wednesday, the company announced an agreement with struggling manufacturer HTC that will import a team of engineers over to Google, to help close the gap between Mountain View’s hardware ambitions and its present reality.

The tie-up’s not quite the acquisition that had been rumored, but rather a “cooperation agreement.” Google is hiring a team of HTC employees—about 2,000 people in all, members of HTC’s “Powered by HTC” division—most of whom have already been working on Google’s Pixel phones. Those employees will stay in Taipei, Taiwan, where HTC is headquartered, but they’ll become full-on Googlers. In exchange for those workers and a non-exclusive license for some of HTC’s intellectual property, Google’s paying HTC $1.1 billion. Both sides hope to close the deal by early 2018. Even after the arrangement is finalized, HTC will continue making its own phones, and building Vive VR products.

According to one source, the agreement essentially shortcuts the acquisition process. Google doesn’t need an entire company; it just needs engineers that can help it tightly integrate Pixel hardware with its homegrown software. So rather than deal with enveloping HTC whole cloth, it can simply pay for and quickly get the team it needs. A team which, again, already makes Google hardware. In some ways, all that changes is the ID badge.

Moto Memories

But the ID badge matters. Google learned this the hard way. When it plunked down $13.3 billion to buy Motorola in 2011, the marriage seemed to make sense. Motorola offered a patent portfolio that would help Google fight in an increasingly litigious mobile industry, plus plenty of cash and assets. Those were all more important, and less exciting, than another little part of Motorola’s business that Google picked up: the hardware team. It seemed that finally, after years of watching other companies make Android phones that paled next to the iPhone, Google was taking its fate in its own hands.

The beautiful coupling of hardware and software, of course, didn’t happen. Google made a big show of not favoring Moto in any way, walling the company off from the very software makers it needed to produce truly great products. “Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open,” Larry Page wrote in a blog post announcing the acquisition. “We will run Motorola as a separate business.” The real problem, according to former employees, was that Google just wasn’t serious about making hardware. It saw itself as a platform company, not a phone company.

Today, though, the time seems right for Google to assert more control over the Android ecosystem. Android dominates so completely that even if, say, LG feels threatened by Google’s hardware aggression, it has virtually no recourse. “At least until the next big technology wave comes, and probably even then, we’re likely stuck with iOS and Android,” says Avi Greengart, who tracks devices and platforms for analysis firm GlobalData. “I don’t even think anyone’s pissed at this point. I think they’re resigned.” Plus, Google made these ambitions clear a long time ago; the Pixel already exists, and it didn’t drive anyone out of business yet.

And in a lot of ways, HTC fits Google far better than Motorola ever did. The two companies have a long history of working together: In addition to the Pixel, HTC manufactured the very first Android phone, the G1. HTC has also had a long run of success as a white-label manufacturer building devices for other companies, and even made a few of the best early Android phones, like the ceramic One X. Even its current device, the HTC U11, ranks among the best Android phones on the market.


If all goes well, the new team of former HTC-ers could finally centralize and simplify Google’s manufacturing, which has previously sat somewhere on the spectrum between “complicated” and “chaos.” The company built phones with Huawei and LG, routers with TP-Link and Asus, augmented-reality gear with Lenovo, and lots of in-house products with various contract manufacturers. While Apple preaches the integration of hardware and software, Google’s been all over the place.

Tighter control over manufacturing affects more than just the bottom line. “Bringing that design capability in-house would likely allow Google to design exactly the phones it wants to, giving it both more freedom and a greater ability to optimize designs to get exactly what it wants and needs from the hardware,” says Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research. New technologies like augmented reality and virtual assistants, especially, require massive power and optimization. Apple’s ARKit works so well in part because of Apple’s new A11 Bionic processor, and its dedicated GPU and neural-processing chips. If Google wants Google Assistant and ARCore to work seamlessly, it needs to make sure the underlying hardware can support them. And even if its traditional Android hardware partners churn out workhorse devices, Google risks that Samsung and others (but mostly Samsung) will eventually want push everyone to Bixby and the Gear VR instead.

As always, a shift like this takes time to fully shake out. It’ll likely be a couple of years before we see what happens when Google lets a bunch of HTC employees hang out in the Googleplex with Android engineers. There are lots of unanswered questions, too: What does this talent drain do to HTC’s existing products, from its phones to its Re cameras to the scale and fitness band it built with Under Armour? What does this mean for a company like LG, Google’s supposed partner for the Pixel 2 XL? One thing we do know, more surely than ever: Google’s a hardware company now. And it’s coming for everybody.

While the invitation doesn’t provide any information on what Motorola will launch or unveil, the picture on the invite is a pretty clear signal at the arrival of the Moto X4 in the country.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone, given the fact the company has recently started putting out teasers for the phone on its Twitter handle. Moto X4 will be launched in India on October 3, but we have yet to learn when exactly it will be available and how much it will cost. The smartphone was first announced last month at the annual IFA tradeshow in Berlin.

For those who’re interested, Moto X4 offers a 5.2-inch (1920 x 1080) display, a Snapdragon 630 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal memory, microSD card support, and a 3,000mAh battery inside. Like other Motorola smartphones, Moto X4 runs a pure version of Android Nougat. On the camera front, Moto X4 has a dual-camera setup, comprising of a 12MP and 8MP sensor. Also, add a 16MP shooter in the front of the phone for self portraits and video calling.

Moto X4 will have a lot to live up to, considering the competition is getting fierce in the premium mid-end segment. When launched in India, Moto X4 will be directly compared to the OnePlus 5, Vivo V7+, and Honor 8 Pro. The latter smartphone, especially, has been praised for its superior camera and overall performance.

Moto X4 launches in the pre-Diwali season when a lot of other players will also be offering their newer smartphones. We’ll have to see how the Moto X4 is priced in India. The Moto Z2 Play is currently the latest premium offering in India from the company at a price of Rs 27,999.

SpaceX’s worldwide satellite broadband network may have a name: Starlink

SpaceX has filed trademark applications for the word “Starlink” to describe its planned satellite broadband network.

SpaceX filed applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on August 21 to have Starlink trademarked for “wireless broadband communication services,” “high-speed wireless Internet access,” and other services related to its upcoming satellite network.

The trademark applications were surfaced by a user on Reddit and then made the rounds in news articles. SpaceX is also seeking an additional trademark on “SpaceX” specifically for the satellite network, in addition to the SpaceX trademarks it already owns for aerospace launch vehicles, rockets, and services for launching payloads into space.

A trademark search on the USPTO site for SpaceX turns up trademarks for other well-known SpaceX projects, including “Hyperloop,” Dragon,” and “Falcon,” but it doesn’t turn up any other possible names for the satellite broadband network.

We asked SpaceX today whether Starlink will definitely be the name of its upcoming broadband service and whether it has any update on when the service will launch. We’ll update this story if we get a response.

Cable-like latencies

Previously, SpaceX has said its satellites will provide gigabit speeds at latencies of around 25ms. Those latencies are about as low as cable Internet service; typically, that wouldn’t be possible with satellites, but SpaceX plans to use low-Earth orbits.

SpaceX VP of satellite government affairs Patricia Cooper described the company’s broadband plans in a Senate Commerce Committee hearing in May. She said that SpaceX will begin testing the satellites within months and launch one prototype before the end of this year.

The launch of 4,425 operational satellites is slated to begin in 2019 with the system reaching full capacity in 2024.

SpaceX has also proposed an additional 7,500 satellites operating even closer to the ground, saying that this will boost capacity and reduce latency in heavily populated areas. But Cooper offered no specific timeline for this part of the project during the May hearing.

SpaceX is not the only company seeking to build a low-Earth, high-capacity satellite broadband network. A company called OneWeb was the first to seek Federal Communications Commission approval for such a system, and it received a key approval in June. OneWeb, which intends to use 720 satellites, is planning to start offering broadband services in Alaska as early as 2019. Another company called LeoSat says it is launching up to 108 low-Earth-orbit satellites.

Entrepreneur put together a fantastic list of award-worthy Instagram accounts for us to take inspiration from, but today we’re just going to look at the number one account: Lowe’s Home Improvement.

We’ll start at the top (with the bio) and dive into the meat (linking people to a website) as we move through these Instagram marketing tips. Let’s jump right in!

1.Include a benefit-driven bio.

It’s common for a businesses to include a short description of the company in the Instagram bio area.

For example, the software company called HubSpot includes a bio description that reads “A full stack of products for marketing, sales and customer relationship management.” That’s a totally accurate description of their company which makes it a really good bio.

Lowes takes their Instagram bio to the next level by not only including a description of the company but also detailing why you should follow the @LowesHomeImprovement account.

The Lowes bio reads, “Inspiring your home improvement journey. Your house becomes a home when you start with Lowe’s.”

Lowe’s is able to do this because their Instagram name is “Lowe’s Home Improvement” rather than just Lowes. This adds on a descriptor for anyone who might not know what type of store Lowe’s is.

By including the descriptor in its Instagram name the company frees up space in the bio to speak to the user deciding whether or not to follow the Lowe’s account.

While it may be your preference to keep an Instagram handle as short as possible, keep the Lowe’s naming strategy in mind if you want to build up a large following.

2. Share a shoppable link.

Instagram photos aren’t clickable unless you make them into an ad.

This can be a real problem for brands that want to link followers to a website where more information can be found or products can be purchased. Many brands use the “click link in bio” approach to move followers from Instagram to their site — and I definitely think that’s a smart tip.

Lowe’s uses this approach as well. You can see how they did it in this post below. Notice how it says, “Find inspiration with the link in profile.”

Many brands will use this tip to drive traffic to a specific URL on their site. This is a great idea unless you post multiple times per day and are always mentioning different products. Then it becomes quite difficult to manage because you have to update the link at exactly the right time to make sure you are directing traffic to the right page on your site.

If you forget to update the link in bio and a new post goes up you’ll be directing traffic to the wrong page and will end up with frustrated shoppers. That’s definitely not what you want, luckily there is a great work around.

If your company is looking to achieve similar results look into creating a shoppable link as soon as possible!

3. Make great use of video.

If you browse through the Lowe’s Instagram feed you will see lots of videos included among the still photo updates. Videos allow you to explain how to use a product or service in an easier and faster way than text.

Video also allows you to show off a product from multiple angles, or in the case of Lowe’s, it allows the brand to show off a big area like a garden or a living room.

There is no doubt that posting video can be beneficial for many brands, but the key thing to do is post the video at the right time. CoSchedule has found that posting at 9pm garners 34% more interactions than any other time, and that, generally speaking, posting videos between 9pm and 8am is best.

There are many reasons this could be, but my best guess is that many people are unable to watch videos at work. It’s easy to discreetly scroll through a bunch of photos but once volume is involved it’s less easy to hide what you’re doing. Whereas when you’re at home and relaxing for the night you can easily play a video without worry or distraction.

Don’t like iOS 11 on your iPhone or iPad? You can downgrade to iOS 10.3.3 if you act quickly. Maybe you don’t like the update, maybe you find iOS 11 battery life to be poor, or app compatibility to be a problem, or perhaps you think the performance is subpar. Whatever the reason, you can easily downgrade iOS 11 if you need to, but the ability to downgrade is only available for a limited time while Apple continues to sign the prior operating system release of iOS 10.3.3.

We’ll walk through how you can downgrade iOS 11 back to iOS 10 on an iPhone or iPad.

This guide requires iTunes and a computer, internet access, an iOS 10.3.3 ISPW file, and a USB cable. There is no way to downgrade iOS 11 without iTunes and a computer.

Important note: downgrading iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 can cause data loss, including the removal of important data or everything on your iPhone or iPad. Thus it is critical to have a backup that is compatible with iOS 10 available before downgrading (one should have been made prior to updating to iOS 11 in the first place), this is because iOS 11 backups are not compatible with iOS 10 or other prior releases. If you only have a backup for iOS 11, then downgrading to iOS 10 may require you to update again to iOS 11 in order to restore from that iOS 11 backup. If you don’t know what you are doing and do not have adequate backups, do not attempt to downgrade or you may experience permanent data loss on the iPhone or iPad.

We’ll cover two ways to downgrade, a simple way that should work for most users, and an approach that requires Recovery Mode if the first downgrade method fails.

How to Downgrade iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 the Easy Way

Be sure you have recent backups available of your iOS device to avoid potential data loss. An iOS 11 backup is only able to be restored to an iOS 11 device, thus you would need an iOS 10 backup to restore to iOS 10. Failing to have a compatible backup can lead to permanent data loss.

  7. Select the device in iTunes by clicking on the little device icon in the upper left corner of iTunes
  8. Select iOS device in iTunes

  9. Now under the device summary section of iTunes, click the ‘Update’ button using the appropriate modifier key to begin the downgrade process:
  • Mac OS: OPTION + click the “Update” button
  • Windows PC: SHIFT + click the “Update” button

Downgrade iOS 11 via iTunes

  • Select the iOS 10.3.3 .ipsw file you downloaded in the first step, and choose to update to that version
  • The iPhone or iPad screen will turn black as the downgrade begins, rebooting multiple times with a progress bar and Apple logo as the downgrade completes
  • When the downgrade has finished the device will boot back up into iOS 10, the process can take a while if the device has a large amount of used storage
  • The downgrade from iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 should go without a hitch, assuming you chose the proper iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for your device, and assuming Apple is still signing the system software. Once Apple stops signing iOS 10.3.3 then downgrading to it from iOS 11 will be impossible.

    Some users have reported that sometimes data in iBooks, Notes, Music, and Messages may go missing with the “update” downgrade approach outlined above. If that happens to you, simply restore the device from an iOS 10.3.3 compatible backup once the device is back on iOS 10.3.3.

    Note that if you choose “Restore” in the above process and then select IPSW, then the device will be either restored from a backup made compatible with iOS 10.3.3 or setup as new like a standard restore process, which can then be restored with a compatible backup.

    If for some reason the above downgrade method fails, you can use the Recovery Mode approach to downgrading iOS 11 detailed next.

    How to Downgrade from iOS 11 with Recovery Mode on iPhone and iPad

    Rarely, the above downgrade process will fail or get stuck on an  Apple logo, or stuck on a black screen. If this happens, you can start the downgrade over again while the iPhone or iPad is in Recovery Mode or DFU mode*

    1. Launch iTunes on the computer
    2. Download the appropriate iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for your device that you want to downgrade
    3. Put the iPhone or iPad into Recovery Mode using the instructions appropriate for your device:
    • For iPad, iPhone 6s and earlier with a clickable Home button, and iPod touch: Press and hold both the Power button and Home button at the same time. Continue holding the buttons down until you see a recovery mode iTunes connect screen (this happens after you see the Apple logo, just keep holding the buttons)
    • For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press down and hold the Power button and Volume Down button concurrently and continue holding until you see the recovery mode screen, this happens after you see the Apple logo so continue holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode indicator of the iTunes logo
  • With the iPhone or iPad in Recovery Mode, connect the device to a computer with iTunes
  • For Mac, OPTION click on “Restore” and for Windows SHIFT click on “Restore” and select the iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file you downloaded in the second step
  • Restore the device to iOS 10.3.3, when the restore is complete choose to setup as new or restore a backup that is compatible with iOS 10.3.3 (note that iOS 11 backups are not compatible with prior iOS releases)
  • * You can learn how to put iPhone 7 into DFU mode here and how to put other iPhone and iPad models into DFU mode here. It’s unusual to need DFU mode to downgrade unless something has gone wrong and the device has become totally unresponsive.

    Help, My iOS 11 Backup Won’t Work on iOS 10!

    If you only have a backup from iOS 11, then it will not work with an iOS 10.3.3 device that has been downgraded. Instead, you will need to download the iOS 11 update or update the device to iOS 11 through Setting app, and then restore the iOS 11 backup to the device after it has been updated to a compatible version of system software. There is no way to make an iOS 11 backup compatible with an iOS 10.3.3 device as the iOS backups are not backwards compatible.

    SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The creative forces behind Milo Sensors call their biometric sensor bracelet “the Fitbit for drinking.”

    “It’s a fun device,” said Evan Strenk. “It’s not invasive, it doesn’t prick you. Just put it on and forget  about it and all the information is through your smartphone.”

    Strenk, CEO and co-founder of Milo Sensors and Bob Lansdorp, CTO and co-founder, met with  NewsChannel 3 at their offices on the campus of UC Santa Barbara. 

    The high-tech wristband reads ethanol, the intoxicating ingredient found in alcohol. 

    “Your skin is a super-highway of small molecules,” Strenk explained.

    As you sip and schmooze at the bar, Proof wearable is watching your back. And the sweat on your wrist. The device monitors your blood alcohol level through perspiration.

    “Say you want to drive home later–you set .08 and all of the sudden your phone buzzes two hours later when you hit .08,” Strenk said. “You’ll know, in the moment, not to have another drink.”

    “If you ask the average person, ‘How long do you think it takes before you hit peak blood alcohol concentration after you have a drink?'” Lansdorp suggested. “Most people would say, ’20 to 30 minutes.’ Actually, it’s 80 minutes.”

    The device works off of a disposable, 12-hour cartridge and caters to people who drink responsibly. 

    If the sleek device looks like the creators took a bite out of the Fitbit, they didn’t. They’ve had their own research team hard at work in offices and a lab in the Bren Hall building on campus, starting back in 2015 when Strenk and Lansdorp went through the New Venture Competition at UCSB with their concept for a wearable blood alcohol sensor.

    Two years later, Milo Sensors revealed its product at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January of this year. Four months later in May, the group launched on Indiegogo, Inc. Strenk said they sold out of 700 Proof wearable devices in one week and reached their $25,000 goal within 24 hours.

    Strenk said the Milo Sensors team decided to make another run and sold out of another 700 Proof wearable bracelets, earning $53,000 in one week.

    The estimated shipping date is December, at the earliest. Strenk said the company is currently in pre-production mode and working to expand operations into the mainstream market sometime in 2018. 

    Strenk said a starter kit will retail for $150 and include a Proof wristband, charger kit and a one-month supply of 12-hour disposable cartridges.

    The hope is, Proof wearable will be a great way to monitor a night out on your own, rather than at the opposite end of a police stop.

    “Our analogy we use is: A breathalyzer gives you one image of your evening, where we give you a movie,” Strenk said.
