In education, one reform often hides another … In the wake of the first edition of the 100% new baccalaureate, a new course will be inaugurated, in 2021, in the 111 university institutes of technology (IUT) in France: the bachelor’s degree in technology (BUT). A national three-year diploma recognized at the license level, which will replace the former university diploma in technology (DUT), bac + 2 diploma.

“It has been fifty years since this diploma evolved”, recalls Laurent Gadessaud, director of the IUT of Créteil-Vitry and spokesperson for the assembly of directors of IUT. “It has been a wish for a long time to be part of the new European study pattern: License-Master-Doctorate (LMD)”. As of the next school year, this wish will therefore become reality. A way, he hopes, “To make the IUT training offer more competitive, to promote exchanges with foreign universities, and to offer students wide openings. “

Thus, there is no need to take two diplomas – a DUT then a professional license – to reach the degree of license. “On the Parcoursup platform, high school graduates can apply directly for an integrated course in three years”, welcomes Laurent Gadessaud. Thanks to a system of bridges, it will also be possible to join the BUT in the second year after a year of bachelor’s degree, or in the third year, after a BTS. Those who do not wish to go up to bac + 3 level will always have the possibility of stopping at bac + 2, and to obtain the DUT diploma which corresponds to 120 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System; the diploma will continue to exist, but will no longer be offered as such on Parcoursup).

Calendar too tight

No revolution, however, on specialties. We will keep the 24 that exist today in DUT. Except that we will give them the name of mentions to stick to the vocabulary of higher education. Within each of these very broad spectrum mentions in terms of trades, between one and five different courses corresponding to the options of the former DUTs will be offered. “All these routes will be framed by national programs which can be adapted to the local level up to 30%”, specifies Laurent Gadessaud. “But the skills expected in each course will remain the same. “ Only the way of deploying them can differ.
