How Google Highlights Certain Video On Demand Services In Its Results When You Search For A Movie Or Series

It is now displayed at the very top of the page, above the results, whereas since its launch in 2017 in the United States, it was located at the bottom of the right column – much more discreet. To see this list displayed, you have to look for “watch” + the name of a film or series, but the name of the work alone is sufficient in most cases. The list of services highlighted, however, seems quite small. According to our tests, only Google’s VOD services are present: YouTube and Google Play. The two market leaders – Orange and My TF1 VOD – according to the CNC barometer released this Thursday, May 13 are not mentioned, nor is the iTunes Store.

Side video on demand by subscription, Google indicates, according to our tests, if a film or a series is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + or MyCanal. However, the results are not always accurate. For example, by searching for “Game of Thrones”, Google offers to watch the series on MyCanal or Amazon Prime Video (both platforms offer the OCS package, which owns the rights to the series). By cons, when looking for “The Handmaid’s Tale”, only Amazon Prime is offered, while the series is also available on OCS.

Another example, when looking to watch “Killing Eve”, only the purchase of an episode on Google Play or YouTube is offered, while the series is currently available on MyCanal.

The service works thanks to Media Actions technology, which the giant of Silicon Valley highlights on its site for developers. It is this technology which allows you to launch an episode with your voice through the Google Assistant, if you have a compatible device.

A Google spokesperson, contacted by Business Insider France says the company “is actively working with a large panel of French suppliers to make more local content available as soon as possible”, but has “no additional details to share for the moment”.
