Google Home Review – Is it Better than the Echo?

Super excited to finally get my hands on thew new Google Home! In this video, I’ll be talking about what it can do and how it compares to the Amazon Echo. This device brings the world’s best search engine and all the learning abilities of Google into your living room. It can play music, start chromecasts, and might actually have what it takes to become a must-have device in every home.

Are you ready for the future? This might be it.

Cheers,
Ben

  1. Google Home just arrived today, I'm really enjoying it since I spend a lot of time in my kitchen/living room area. Great video btw, and thanks, now I have milk on my shopping list

  2. the Amazon echo has far better home automation. I can turn on multiple devices with one phrase through harmony integration. It can shop for you, tell you about credit card balance and bill details and other stuff through Amazon echo's skills. for some reason every reviewer fails to mention them

  3. I've been using the echo dot for about 3 weeks now and while it's good at some things, as BRUH pointed out the power of the Google search engine is light-years beyond the capabilities of the Echo. I'd say the Echo misinterprets me 30% of the time. Another 30% it doesn't know what I'm talking about. But both devices are cheap enough where I'll be buying both.

  5. Good up to the best point of all, The Alexa/ Dot does not have the ability to make or take calls or instant messages, google home does. with an entire generation of baby-boomers retiring and their parents up in their 80's this is an extremely important feature.

  6. Hi Ben. Can you tell me the best way to set up automations with Google Home? I noticed you said you use IFFT WITHOUT having to use a trigger word, but I have yet to figure how to do that. I've done the skills through Alexa, but have had no such luck yet with the Home. I am trying to do exactly what you demoed.. saying "Ok Google, goodnight or I'm home", and have all my lights turn off/on. I agree with you that I would rather not use IFTT, and instead use Google directly with Smartthings, but not sure how yet.

Update: ok just fingered out how to link IFTT and created applet. However, any IFTTT applet I make cannot turn off more than one light. I've made several applets with same trigger phrase for each light, but only one works. I'm using several GE smart lights. Would appreciate how you got yours to work.

  7. Like you I'm tied into Google more than Amazon, so the Home looks tempting, but it has to be multi-user really or the family will not be happy. I was thinking of just getting a Dot to see how useful it is

  8. Bruhhhhh!!!! Must say, after watching all your video's if just ordered a Pi and gonna start setting up my own HA.
Now, I have a few Philips Hue lamps, but no bridge yet, don't ask me why XD
If I understand right you can emulate the bridge with HA, right?
Could you make some sort of video for the hue lights, about how to set things up?

  9. Do you know if google home works in other languages? That would be a really strong point, since Amazon echo doesn't and it's not going to in a near future.

  10. I'm from the UK, if I order Google Home in the US and get a friend to ship it over do you think it will still work over here? I really want to get Google home for my parents for Christmas.

  11. I find it way cool nd easier to say "Alexa" than "ok google" and how you didn't include how Amazon echo is better to shop for anything than just a shopping list on the Google Home. Google home best feature is to search. Amazon best feature is to shop on line but you only mention on of those strength which I find to be very bias

  12. I bought a google home while it is on sale for $99. I was contemplating getting the echo dot but really wanted something that would be able to play music too…plus at least right now it is $80 cheaper than an echo!

  13. I pretty much agree with everything you just said. I just bought Google Home last night and it's great. The only real problem/dislike is I can't play any of my movies via a voice command from my library. I bought these from the Play Store…WTF! I've yet to see anyone mention that in there reviews. I just keep hearing that Netflix support is coming. How did it launch without that feature? At least it should be able to play movies from its own service.
