The Golden Minecart Awards are still a few months away, but people are already starting to talk about Game of the Year. However, whether due to time constraints or simply a lack of interest, there will always be great games that we miss.
To shine a light on those games that will make up the Top Ten lists that we will never play, I asked the PS Nation writers:
Which Game of the Year contender will you never play?
Probably near the top of that list will be Rise of the Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy XV, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Titanfall 2, and Dark Souls 3.
I’ve never been a real fan of the Tomb Raider series, but I can certainly understand why it has such a strong following, as it has leapt from generation to generation with improvements in graphics & gameplay.
Regarding Final Fantasy XV, RPGs take a long time to complete and, although I am a fan of the older Final Fantasy titles on NES/SNES, and of course FF7 on PS1, I just don’t think I’d make that type of commitment to a game that large.
The last three are just newer games that have received a lot of press and hype but I can’t just get into. I didn’t play any of the previous games in those series at all and some of the crushing difficulties keep me hesitant to jump into them.
This certainly isn’t a knock against anyone who enjoys those genres and these games in particular, they just aren’t the games I want to dive in when there are so many more I’d like to experience.
This year seems to be getting some hype for the shooters coming out, like Overwatch, Battlefield, Doom, and Titanfall 2. Those are games I probably won’t play because they’re simply not in my wheelhouse normally.
I’m sure Skyrim Remastered will win a few awards, but that’s a game I don’t have any interest in playing. I played the original release of it and found it incredibly boring. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is another game that I’ve been hearing good things about but don’t think I’ll play for various reasons.
2016 has been a pretty decent year and all the games on my want list I’ve played already. There are only a few gaps in my playlist that aren’t backlogged from previous years, but there are a some games I’ll probably never get around to.
For instance I’m interested in Titanfall 2, but my PSN Friends List does not have many, if anyone, playing that game. And with the game being heavily multiplayer focused I don’t see myself jumping into it.
Another title is the recent Hitman game which has concluded its first season. I have watched a lot of videos and the game looks great, but I have no patience for stealth games so I prefer to just watch others play.
I am a huge fan of Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4. In addition, the announcement of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was unexpected to say the least. I love when developers are allowed to take risks and when they fully committed to their outside the box ideas. That is why I am so surprised I never had any interest in Far Cry Primal.
They took a game I really enjoy and combined it with some outside the box ideas. Especially after Far Cry 4 was so similar to Far Cry 3, I thought I would have jumped all over this. I still am not really sure why, but I have no desire to ever play Far Cry Primal.
Thanks as always to John Payant for editing.
